Absolutely false. There is no such thing as a OS coded for 8GB. At best apps are optimized for 8GB. But I can tell you that the difference in reloads between 8GB and 16GB is huge since iPadOS 18. 26 hasn't changed much. That difference used to be hardly noticeable until iPadOS 17. Now my tabs reloads all the time. Your use of the iPad my differ, but for me the issue has been there for a whole year already.
Maybe my wording of “coding” isn’t correct but aren’t you kind of agreeing with me?

You’re saying that your tabs reload all the time. So in effect having 8GB or 16GB makes no difference since it still reloads all the same, no?

Oh no, they only do that on the 8GB model, on 16GB they hardly ever do. The difference is pretty huge.

The Ipad Pro M5 with 10 Cores and 16GB Ram is about 5% faster in Multicore then the 9 Cores at geekbench. Currently Singlecore is nearly the same....

For comparison the M4 below

Most people buy every 5-6 years on an iPad but when they do they want the latest model. The annual updates on any product line are just to keep things current, not for people to actually swap them out annually.

Exactly. This main character syndrome people have never ceases to amaze me - 'I don't want to upgrade yearly so Apple should just stop making new iPads until I'm personally ready to upgrade'.

I'm upgrading from the M1 iPad Pro. Apple still charges full price, so it should be as current as it can be within reason. Which is why they refresh it every 18 months or so.

This was posted in early October for the iPad. Curious to see if this is the final number.

No for me

I got the M4 when it came out, upgrading from an M1. The screen tech and reduced weight were the big triggers

This M5 doesn't offer anything exciting for me to make the jump.

I've also moved away from updating my apple tech regulary

My M1 iMac is still going strong. I had my iPhone 13 for 4 years and the M4 iPad will also have to last at least 4 years

I'm not planning on upgrading. I think these spec bumps are more useful for actual pro users using apps and programs that make use of it. I was quite relieved not to have FOMO about it...

I'm hoping that next year they will upgrade the Air to have ProMotion. If they do, I'm thinking of 'downgrading' to that as I don't need all the features of the pro - just couldn't go to a screen without ProMotion.

With phones, I'll probably be ProMaxing indefinitely though.

Ordered an M5 going from M4 13” only so I can downsize to an 11”. Otherwise I probably would have held off. Had the 13” since launch day in spring 2024.

For those of us upgrading from an M1 iPad Pro whose battery is somewhat degraded (even though Apple doesn't admit that it is), but does not have any real performance bottlenecks, do you think it makes sense to jump on this device now (M5)? I don't see a lot of rumoured new features or upgrades for M6 and beyond, outside of dual cameras, a ridiculous size and possibly a foldable iPad (2028).

I went from the M1 to the M4 and it was an outstanding upgrade for the OLED display and the lighter, thinner form factor. The M5 would be the same but with a new processor & more RAM.

I'm going from an 11" M4 256GB to a 11" M5 1TB. The primary drivers for me are:
  • Double the RAM. I really should have just splurged on the 1TB last year and I feel some regret for not doing so originally but especially now that my iPhone outpaces my iPad on RAM, I think it's worth the investment to be in a good place hardware wise for the next few years. I normally don't upgrade my iPad and this would be the first time I've upgraded in less than a four year timespan.
  • iPadOS 26 has completely revitalized my love for the iPad and how I use it. I know the new multitasking system can be a bit contentious with some but I love it and being able to so seamlessly open and work across multiple windows makes the iPad so much more useful for me. If Apple ever adds the ability to stream audio from multiple sources at one time (next year, please!) I would be at a point where I can comfortably replace a Mac with the iPad.
  • The Neural Accelerators in the M5 (as with the A19 Pro) would be pretty beneficial in whatever Apple ends up doing with AI. I'm not holding my breath in this aspect but if something interesting does come down the line, or app developers start using the on-device model for interesting ways in their apps, I think having that hardware offers a decent level of future proofing.
  • I'm also opting for Space Black instead of silver this time. 😂
I completely understand that this is a luxury want instead of a need but Apple products are really the only financial splurges I take in my life so I might as well enjoy them while I can!

I have been considering going the other direction, what made you downsize?
I commute by public transit and toting the iPad Pro with my lunch and snacks and all gets unwieldy. An extra pound shaved off can help. And I’m not a heavy multitasker; having a small window or two behind my main work app is usually fine, so I’m not sure I’m using the largest canvas possible

Same, plus my car. I look forward to my toys (Apple products).

curious if there is benefit for splurging for the extra ram models at 16 vs 12 gb on the m5?

I knew I wasn’t crazy.

App developers have the opportunity to have their app request more RAM than the standard limit.

Which is why apps such as Octane X is able to work phenomenal. It’s up to the developers’s to code their app.

Does it make a difference going from 12GB or 16GB. The answer is 100% YES.
