I have to chime in here, never mind that it wasn't the Bold I was considering but the Curve. Though it'll still be a while yet before the App Store is out, I have to say that I love using my iPhone. It works for me because it feels as though it's best suited for entertainment while the Blackberry seems more for the business types. I like the interface of the iPhone too much that I'm sticking with it. Whatever voids there may be, other devices can fulfill it but it definitely won't be a Blackberry for me. Use what works for you.

The answer is no, and how can anyone tout that tiny little screen to compete with the iPhone.

Given the ridiculous amount of space devoted to the wholly unneeded hardware keyboard, the device would have to be 18 inches long for that screen to match the iPhone.

and it is debatable what is better a true keyboard or a software one, there are arguments for both sides.

Not really. I have been saying for 18+ months now that hardware keyboards are gong to go the way of the dodo bird. There is no good argument for one now unless the ONLY thing you use your phone for is to send text messages. Given the limited size of text messages you can get away with a keyboard taking up massive amounts of physical space.

If you want to browse the web, view pictures, watch videos or pretty much anything else cool these days, you need a device that is not going to sacrifice screen space for keyboard space. The trade-off for a hardware keyboard is just too massive in too many areas.

Again if you just want to text all day long, go for the hardware keyboad. Otherwise you are guranteed a second rate experience for most of the things that a device like the iPhone excels at.. Web Browsing, Video viewing and the rest.

I am really considering the BB Bold. I bought a BB Curve because it was on sale at AT&T for $100--cheap--and loved it until all the videos I uploaded onto the phone lagged big time, so I considered the iPhone and returned the Curve. In some of my previous posts, I was dying for the iPhone 3G to be released until my friend gave me his first generation iPhone, and for the first time, I was able to experience all the nifty things the iPhone was capable of. As much as I love the iPhone, I tried it out for a week, and still, I had a difficult time typing text messages. At first, I thought it would take some time, but I think a week was good enough for me. Don't misinterpret what I am stating into something negative against the iPhone; I love the iPhone, and it is a great phone because I am a huge Apple user, and it's easier to sync to my iMac, but I simply have my personal preference of having a physical keyboard. No big deal. I don't know though. I am really torn, and I don't really want to wait until August to get a phone because the phone I have right now is over three years old, lol. I am actually going into an AT&T tomorrow to check out the iPhone 3G to see if it's what I really want.

Compared to the Blackberry 8800 I purchased in March 2008, the UI appears to have minor improvements. I found the keyboard on my BB to be tedious. After using it for 5 months, I dumped it and picked up a cheap phone in anticipation of the possible iPhone 3G. That was the worst $ 500 unsubsidized money I have ever spent.

Having seen the video, I highly doubt it will compete with the iPhone. I believe the Thunder (Verizon exclusive) will be a competitor. Since I use a Mac and never found Pocket Mac to be the greatest piece of software, I doubt I would ever consider another Blackberry.

Just my to shiny pennies.

Mobile Me is keeping me with iPhone. For me, as a road salesman, the push contact and calendar functions are way too valuable. As a Mac user the iPhone is the perfect fit.

The responses i read on this thread have been funny, weird and borderline disturbing. As for the OP:

I'm also waiting for the Bold to come out i've been eyeing it since announcement as an alternative to the iPhone 3G in case the 3G iPhone announcement disappointed me (which it did). I have an original iPhone and upgrading to the 3G model in its current form/feature-set and locking myself into an 18 month contract just doesn't make any sense to me.

I however want an unlocked 3G phone and the BB is a strong alternative for me. I don't care about the small screen as long as its readable and clear (which it is given the high resolution) and i'd even prefer its tactile keyboard. These in addition to an expandable slot, decent UI, 3mm headphone jack, 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, real Bluetooth, MMS, Copy/Paste, legendary email support makes it worth a strong look at for me

I'll still keep my original iPhone to play with but TBH i see the BB fitting in as my next main phone. However, this is all theoretical i have to see the phone first and give it a spin before making a final decision.

I wonder what's taking RIM so long but i hear Rogers is releasing it today

Unless Apple fixes at least half of the bugs and 3g reception problems the Bold will be the one for me. I am the Blackberry and Iphone admin for my company so I will get to do a heavy comparison between the 2 and will make my decision then. Iphone people will not be happy when they compare their 3g iphone that prob on Edge or 1 bar next to a Bold that has 3 to 5 bars 3g. Apple still has a good month or so to get this fixed.

poor battery life and keyboard may send me to the BOLD

also the bold has full html emails now ...

websurfing on a 3 inch screen is not as important as battery life and a real keyboard ...im not leaving yet ...but i will be checking out the bold on day 1

also the current appp in the store are lame ...for the most part ..i now its ealry but ,,,most a crap

I never mentioned MobileMe but I'm pretty sure you can't get push e-mail on the BlackBerry without a BlackBerry plan - it can't automatically give you push e-mail when it isn't supported by the backend mail server![/url]

And you can't get network data OTA (meaning not WiFi) on an iPhone without a data plan either. Your point being?

I probably wouldn't have switched to an iPhone from BB if RIM had released an update/upgrade to the Pearl. I personally don't like the full QWERTY, and the other two models coming out (touch screen and flip-phone) don't appeal to me. If I'm going for a touch screen, might as well get an iPhone, I thought.

You might want to go get the phone itself checked out cause it sounds like a lemon. I get nothing, but incredible service which actually surprised me.

Poor battery life? Interesting, I have been getting better battery life than my older iPhone. Keyboard...if QWERTY is your thing then yeah, I would go for your BB. Personally, I can't stand to use them now after having the iPhone for so long. Do you happen to own an iPhone or go off what some people say?

i currently have the following 3 phones all working full time

Sprint Pearl2 ..this phone is out of contract and will most likely become a att bold Balckberry

Nokia 95 - great battery life can go days without charging and heavy phone use and mp3 daytime photos and nice video ....i used the sim from the curve for this phone it was like my weekend phone ...it now has a $100.00 att go plan sim card in it so i was able to use it when the iphone dies and i was at a concert trying to meet friends ...Bruce Springsteen ...great show at Giants stadium a few days ago

iphone 3g i bought it a week ago while in Las Vegas ...and switched from my beloved Blackberry curve....u could forget to charge the curve for at leasta day or 2 and stilll get tones of email phone usages

if a did a mass transit commute i would love the iphone as you can read your mail and there are tons of games ... im not really a gamer on phones ..and the nytime app i think is fantastic ...blomberg is very nice also ......

but for quick email and replys nothing beats the blackberry and battery life on the blackberry can not be beat .....

lasly .. i have had the iphone in a leather case since purchase as it seems more fragile .... my curve of 14 months rode alone in my pocket with keys coinsa other phones...lol .... the iphone just seems to need more care to make sure i dont crack the face...

if the nokia n95 had blackberry connect that would be my fav phone ...

i love the ability to do some online web stuff on the iphone ...its great for when your in need of logging into a website to confirm order placements...and your away from your laptop ...but so far i feel like i have given up battery life and fast email response ...for a very slick iphone that might not be able to handle a full day and eve ...

You people piss and moan about little problems with your iPhones, then whine about people creating threads about BlackBerries, because the iPhone is obviously superior to any gadget ever conceived.

I'm still no fan of the Bold though.

The bold looks like every other blackberry. I dont mean to knock BBs but it seems like they keep coming out with the same model and just randomly assign a new name to it.

I just picked up an iphone and I'm actually thinking about returning it and switching to another, possibly the bold. Don't get me wrong, I love the iphone and its presentation is absolutley unrivaled but when you look past the "look" of the phone and its nice little "pinch and poke" features, you realize that, at least for now, its severly lacking. The problems: no tethering (even though AT&T allows it on every other phone), can't swap SIMs for internation use, date encyption is weak, Apple refuses to support Slingbox (or any streaming video INCLUDING AT&T's) as they'd rather force you to purchase their programs through itunes AND it bothers me that I'm working with a cell phone company who's morals and ethics are so great that they've already settled a huge lawsuit for selling their clients private information. Bottom line: Apple's a greedy, greedy company and AT&T's not much better. If only Apple could pull their head out of their own @ss, stopped acting like they were better than everyone else (even though in some aspects they are), fixed the issues with iphone and contracted it with a more reputible company like Verizon it would be THE PERFECT PHONE but for now it's def. not!

I have to say, from what I've read about the Bold it looks like a great device. However, I love my iPhone and wouldn't ever consider trading it for a Blackberry.
