Very true- in my opinion it's too awkward to hold comfortably. A laptop has a place to "sit", the iPad Pro feels like I'm just holding a giant pane of glass.

Deciding between the Air2 or Mini4 for my iPad needs, along with my MacBook. To each his own.

I find the Air 2 comfortable holding in portrait for long periods.

Tried the iPad Pro in-store, and it felt cumbersome. I hope they reduce the bezels substantially for the second version, and introduce iPadOS to turn the iPad into a serious computer.

Well, that's totally on Microsoft. I've used Pages in split view on OS X and it works great. But in the end, I found positioning and sizing Windows using BetterSnapTool faster than using split view. That should work with any OS X app, regardless of whether they've been updated for split view.

OS X is trying to honor minimum window sizes. If things can't fit, then it disallows the split view.

will sell or return it, Will see what will be the iPad air 3, if the pencil will work with it great. if not will have to buy iPad pro again.

I'm struggling a bit with the idea of returning mine as the January 8 return date approaches.

The only thing stopping me is that I love using the IPP, especially due to its display. We actually lined up all of our devices here and did a direct comparison. Two windows laptops, rMBP, and the IPP side by side and as far as the display goes it's no contest. In fact the IPP may have the best display of any computing device I have ever used. Web browsing in portrait mode is heavenly.

There are a couple of negatives, I feel that not being able to view inline webm files is annoying. Sure I can open them in a third party viewer but it would be nice to see the same inline previews that everyone else sees. These sort of little Apple inconveniences are a pain.

But the big issue is the expense. Here in Canada the 128 IPP with a case and Applecare was $1600. When I purchased it I tried not to think about the cost, but the amount has certainly become the elephant in the room. Ever time I use it there is a moment of WTF $1600 flashing through my head. Really it's silly expensive, and should make you think twice regardless of how rich or poor you may be.

I'm in the same boat. I don't really need the IPP since I already have the Air 2. I bought the IPP with the intention of selling the Air, but it will still be a big chunk of money. Though I have not paid nearly as much as you and I got the discover card Apple Pay cash back, which is nice.

But I love using the IPP. It's an amazing machine. At first I dismissed it, but my curiosity got the best of me and I picked one up a couple weeks ago. I just wish I had the pencil to try out before Jan 8, but that doesn't seem like it will happen.

The cost of the device is definitely in the back of my mind, but right now I am leaning on keeping it. It is a delight to use and is not nearly as unwieldy as I thought it would be.

Btw, nice screen name. I lived in Sanlitun for eight years while I was in China for work. I even remember the days of south bar street before it got razed. Those were some fun times.

So I have to confess...I broke down and bought another iPP tonight. I saw that the 128GB SG Pro was in stock at a local BB and I've found myself missing it the past couple of weeks and I went ahead and bought it. Forgot how nice it was. I did buy a Magic Keyboard instead of a Smart Keyboard cover because I found that I didn't use the keyboard cover enough the last time to justify having the added bulk all the time, but I still had my smart cover from the last time so lucky me I guess.

My wife as always knew I would eventually want it again and she told me that returning it was a mistake; someday I'll actually start listening to her.

I am pleased to announce that I will be keeping the iPP.

I've had the iPP for almost three weeks now. For the first week and a half, I marveled at its size and power, and tried to spend as much time with it as possible on my couch and in my bed. As a prior iPad Air 2 owner, I wanted to ensure that the iPP was capable of being a worthy tablet for casual media consumption use. I will have to admit that even after 10 days of usage, I could not decide if this tablet could effectively replace the iPad Air 2 because of its size and weight. So I remained undecided and knowing how well received the SP4 had been, I purchased the SP4 for trial and discovered that despite its very desirable hardware design and arguably superior functionality, the SP4 was too buggy and ultimately, unproven. In addition, the battery was average at best (about 4-5 hours of real time usage). So in the end, I returned the SP4.

For the last week or so, instead of focusing too much on the iPP's size and asking whether it could be fulfill my tablet needs, I tried to do some real work on it. I review and edit a variety of documents. By using Google Drive and OneDrive as my primary file management systems, I had absolutely no problem using the iPP in lieu of my Macbook Pro. I began to rediscover how great iOS was. Smooth, effortless by touch, seamless, etc. Going into documents, renaming them, moving them into different folders, creating new documents, marking up documents, annotating documents, signing documents, emailing/receiving documents, saving them via the cloud all worked beautifully thanks to iOS and its wonderful apps.

Combined with the iPP's solid battery life and virtually no lag or bugs, it was the multi-tasking and productivity of the device that sold me more so than its tablet capability. Don't get me wrong, I've learned to use the iPP for casual use by changing the cover to something lightweight. It's a great tablet. But it's more than that. For me, and for the first time, I began to believe that the iPP could one day actually replace my laptop.

May I ask you what apps you are using? I'm still in the "consumption phase" with my IPP. I looked into MS Office, but was shocked how bad the formatting was on most work documents. The documents (Word, PPT) contain math formulas and EXCEL tables. Especially the PPT slides looked awful, almost unreadable. My best option at this time seems to be a Remote Desktop app.

but was shocked how bad the formatting was on most work documents
For giggles, do your documents look good with the online version of MS Word? I think the formatting issues are due to the fact that Word for iOS is a much less featured app then on the desktop, much like the online version. I'd be surprised if your complex documents were formatting cleanly and accurately using the online version of Word.

Probably not really apapro to this discussion, other then it looks like for your needs the iOS version of Office (and their by extension) the iPad Pro isn't a great fit.

someday I'll actually start listening to her.

That's what men always say! :D

I am really glad that you've found that the iPP does work for you as a productivity device. But I'd just like to note that these things you list have been doable on iPads for quite a while, and it's why I've been convinced that iOS is the future of computing. It's just that the large screen of iPP does make productivity tasks more pleasant to do than they were on smaller tablets. And perhaps the "Pro" moniker is helping people like yourself take a new look at iOS capabilities, instead of perhaps assuming that you can't get XYZ done on a tablet.

I'm keeping mine. This thing is too bloody fast and fluid to give up. It's nirvana.
Good comment, that's one of the reasons I may keep mine, although at the moment I'm swinging back and forth like a pendulum as to whether to keep it or return by 20th Jan. I'm finding this thread very useful as I try to make up my mind!

I bought an iPhone 6s+, to replace my 5s and iPad Mini 2 wifi/4g. I found with the bigger phone I wasn't using the Mini so much, but how I LOVED that little iPad!, I took it everywhere with me...but I felt I wanted something bigger to sit between my iPhone and my MacBook and MacMini with Thunderbolt Display. The MacBook is from 2008 so it's getting a bit long in the tooth, and since upgrading to El Capitan it's developed that Trackpad/Keyboard freezing issue that seems to affect these older models. So I thought maybe the IPP could replace that as well.....

So I bought it along with the Logitech Create keyboard in the Apple Store, Regent Street, London. There were no apple keyboards available, but the staff there told me they actually thought the Logitech was the better of the two. It's a good keyboard, works off the connector like the apple one, but it's also backlit which the apple is not. However I found using it like this was more like the iPad trying to be a "MacBook" and not an iPad, if that makes any sense. So I bought another case, the Pipetto, which was only(!!?) £45, although a lot cheaper than the two apple offerings, the Smart Cover + the separate back cover.

So now I have the keyboard for laptop type work (I'm typing on it now) and the case for when I want to use it like and iPad. Although using it as an iPad seems strange, as it's so big!, seems almost too big to be an iPad! maybe I'm still trying to adjust my brain from using a Mini for so long..

So, as I'm using this thing more I find I'm liking it more and more, but I'm not loving it, not like I love my other Apple products...which is strange. Maybe that will come in time, I have another 20 days left if I want to return it. But what will I get in it's place? This thing is so powerful, far more than I will ever need, so it's future-proofed I think for the next 3-4 years, maybe even longer. Macbook's?, I'll be looking at £1000+, iPad Air 2? Possibly, although I have a Surface Pro 2 I can use as a 10" tablet if I need to....

Decisions, decisions, watch this space....

Coming from an iPad Air2, it took me about two weeks to adjust. I kept going back and forth between the Air and Pro, switching back to Air whenever the Pro started feeling too big, then switching back to the Pro when I started missing the larger screen. I'm finally getting to the point where I consistently prefer the Pro most of the time. I imagine the adjustment might take even longer coming from the Mini. But once you get used to the large screen, you totally miss it when you go back to a smaller device.

I'm still on the fence. For me, the biggest challenge is the device that I owned prior to receiving the Pro for Christmas. For example, if I already had the Air 2, I would have just stuck with that and waited for the Pro 2 or 3 to improve things. But I'm coming from the iPad 4 (before the Air), which is getting slow with iOS usage. So I have 3 options: (1) keep Pro sell 4, (2) return Pro buy Air 2, or (3) return Pro and keep using the 4 and save the money for next years Pro 2 (or Air 3 if it can use the pencil and has smart connector).

What do you guys think of my options? Currently, I'm leaning towards either 1 or 3 (if they had updated the Air 2 this year, I'd probably be leaning towards that one, but buying a new device that hasn't been updated for 1 year from Apple seems unwise to me)

As an iPad Air 2 user, I would suggest 3 for you. Love my iPad, but the battery life is poor. I'd keep your 4 and wait for the Pro 2.

I don't understand. If you didn't already have the iPP, people could certainly share their experiences. But you already have the iPP and iPad 4 in your hands to personally experience them. What's more to ask?

Everyone's need is different, as is their financial status. You are the best person that could decide whether it's worth the cost.

You don't understand the point of forums? We come to sites like this to throw ideas around and learn from each other. I'm not turning over the reins to someone else to make this decision for me, but I'm still making up my mind and like most other people on forums, I value other perspectives, especially ones that I haven't thought of yet. Unfortunately, your post was not a helpful perspective that will help in any way.

I might return it for the simple reason that it's too fragile to use/carry without a case, but all cases are much too heavy, flying in the face of using this as a mobile device. For example, the Macbook (which is less fragile because it doesn't have an open screen) is lighter than the IPP with most cases that are made for it, especially the ones that have a keyboard built in.

There may not be a iPP2 until 2017. Don't be so sure that come Sept/Oct 2016 a new iPP shows up.

Are you prepared to use the Air1 until then if you return the iPP? If you're enjoying it, then keep it.

What makes you say that it's so fragile? I carried my first iPP around every day for several weeks with only a Smart Cover and I never had any issues or felt like it was going to be damaged.

If you're enjoying it but are really concerned that it might be damaged carrying it around, why not just get AppleCare+ for $99? You can get a replacement for it if it's damaged for $49 twice; what are the odds of that happening?

Good point. I forgot about the recent trend of going 18 mo between iPad upgrades. This backs up my previous comment about the point of forums and learning from each other even though I have both devices in my possession to compare for myself.

For clarification though, I would be stuck with the iPad 4, not the Air1, if I decide to keep my current one instead of the Pro.

So on this point, perhaps the play for me is to return my Pro, going on the assumption that in a few mo the Air 3 will release and I can see if that gets the upgrades I'm interested in (pencil and smart connector). If not, at that point, I can always buy the Pro again if I don't like the Air 3's specs. Then I don't have to wonder if the perfect upgrade is right around the corner.

I don't think the Air3 will come until Sept. Some think Apple will announce something with the Apple Watch v2, but I don't think so.

If you want an other perspective, I have one. I noticed that in all your posts, you were looking for reasons NOT to keep the iPP (wait for Air 3 or iPP 2). Not once you mentioned anything you like about the iPP. Normally, people that love their iPP couldn't stop talking about the great things they do with it.

You clearly are looking to upgrade your old iPad, but didn't want to get the obvious choice (Air 2). The iPP is not for you. Just return it.
