Any chance you could upload a picture showing how the 1440x852 looks?

I have a 15" hi-res on the way and I am getting really nervous after all this talk about eye-strain and whatnot.

On a sidenote, probably a stupid question but I live in Norway and we don't have any apple stores here, just premium resellers. I don't suppose there is any possibilty to make a swap at a reseller store if I find I am not happy with the 1680x1050 resolution?

1440x852 (not all the screen is used !!)
1440x852 (streched)

I'm going to a Apple reseller in Berlin right now to ask how can I return it. I keep u updated.

cheers

Here you go on a 15" high res glossy.

First screen shot: 1440 x 852
2nd shot 1440x 852 stretched

Beat me to it here you go for anyone, native res;

I am in the same boat, but I am happy with the 17" HD resolution.

Thanks for the screenshots guys, when you say not the whole screen is used in 1440x852 does that mean you get black borders on the side?

And also, from the stretched pictures I really could not see much of a difference, probably hard to see on a screenshot, does it look very awkward?

Yes there are 2 black stripes on the top and bottom. The streched resolution is horrible, it's not very visible on the screenshot but it's very blurry.

I'm right now posting from a 15" normal screen (from a apple reseller) and it's obvious ! I have to change it. I have 30 days to send it back but 1st I have to call Apple, I change it in the shop.

So how will the process be in terms of returning it? Did you leave it at the reseller now or do you have to call apple and arrange a return at the reseller?

Sorry, I meant "I can't change it in the shop". The guy told me that I have to call apple, then the German Post will pick it up. I forgot to ask about the restock fees :( I'll call Apple on Monday (hotline closed on weekends) and let you know.

Im angry against myself cos i bought something without checking if it's ok for me :(

There should be no restock fees, I have never paid in the Uk.

Every country has it's own policies...the ones with only resellers and no Apple store are usually pretty bad for the customer. I was told when buying a MBP in Prague that as soon as I walked out the door I was stuck with it and had to send it in for warranty even if it was broken when I opened it...worse yet they wouldn't allow me to open it and test it without paying first. But I needed a laptop immediately so I risked it. If it had been faulty they wouldn't have exchanged or refunded me...."send it to service we just sell them". This attitude is common in several countries in that area where customer service is an after thought.

Yeah maybe I just need to get used to it.

I thought I could change the resolution but I can't set 1440x900 .. only 1440x852 which looks totally strange.

Will I be able to set 1440x900 in Win7 in bootcamp (I haven't installed it yet) ? I think 1680x1050 is too much for games.

Have you tried SwitchResX for 1440*900?

In Germany, when whatever you buy, you have at least 2 weeks to return it with no fees.

Hmm I'm having a look at it but it seems kind of complicated. Somehow I am not able to add a new 1440*900 resolution an apply it.

ok I've just talked to a Apple guy (but not from sales) who told me that I will have nothing to pay. If I call Apple on Monday, they will send UPS to pick the MBP up and I should get the money back in 2-3 days.

This is an interesting thread in that I went with the stock 15" 2.4GHZ Core i5, standard res.
My previous computer was a 2007 Santa Rosa 2.4GHZ C2D 17" Hi-res glossy and that screen was amazing compared to my Tibook.
I'd noticed of late though that I was travelling more and more and the 17" was too heavy for that use.

I'd been toying with the idea of getting a new laptop but said I'd wait til Apple announced something. Getting a 13" was certainly a possibility however ever since the Tibook I've had a soft spot for 15" Apple notebooks. Well after the Core i5/i7 announcement I decided 15" was where its at. Then came the choice of standard res or high res. I was worried about not having enough screen real estate coming from a 17" hi-res but I think for my uses, I don't really need hi-res.
I'm not a creative professional and so in effect the extra resolution is nice to have but not necessary. I think sometimes that from a pure consumer (non-creative professional) viewpoint we can convince ourselves that we need extra features to prolong hardware life etc.
I opted for the standard res 15" and couldn't be happier.
Fonts are pleasantly larger than my 17" screen for browsing, document creation and its still got enough screen real estate for my photo editing.
If you're having trouble with the hi-res screen, I think you should return it.

Hi,

I am in the same boat. I recently purchased the hi res matte 15" and I am having trouble reading web pages. I had the previous generation 15" with the glossy and prefer the 1440 x 900, but I gave my old computer to my wife.

I wanted the matte, but now I'm stuck with either squinting or going with 1280 x 800. I agree that the 1440 x 852 looks weird.

Yep, I'm returning it for sure. I just hope it won't have to wait long before everything is processed.

You'll both be happy with the 1440 x 900 screen, are you going to exchange your hires MBP's for the lower resolution screen?

How does it look totally strange? Are things skewed?

Most likely the reason 1440x900 isn't available in OS X is because of the aspect ratio of the screen. I'm assuming it's the same as the low res, but since the low res resolution isn't available, maybe it's slightly different? Anywho, if it's not available in OS X, it's probably not available in Windows either.

Don't worry, I got my HR 15" Macbook Pro for 4 days now and absolutely love the high resolution (as expected). If I can, I'll go for 1920x1200 in a couple of years...

Those people who claim there will be eyestrain problems are the same people who defend the iPad as an eReading device compared to the Kindle and say that LCD screens are just fine (which they are not, ePaper is much better for reading)

Running LCDs in non-native resolutions is NOT an option, except for games if you don't care about quality that much. With regular use, it just looks super-horrible, except if you hit a resolution where you have 4 pixels with the same color (which would be 840x525 for the 1680x1050 screen).

I finally got to see a 15" Hi-Res at the Pasadena Apple Store and did a good comparison between the 15", 15" Hi-Res, and 17". The standard 15" is like my Powerbook G4 so I'm very used to that but like others I find some of the fonts to be a bit small on the 15" Hi-Res, especially on some web sites that user smaller fonts in sidebars and things like that. The Finder menu fonts are smaller and application menu front like in Safari are noticeably smaller. The 15" Hi-Res and the 17" font sizes look pretty much identical on their respective displays.

For me the smaller fonts are a show stopper on the 15" Hi-Res but the display does look better overall then the standard 15". When I changed the resolution in the Displays Preferences I didn't like the way the screen looked and I hate zooming in and out to read text so that's also not an option for me. I think the only way I can go now is with the 17" because on the 17" you can change the resolution to 1680 X 1050 and it looks great (no stretching or pixelation). At 1680 X 1050 it's the same resolution as my iMac 20" G5 and I'm very comfortable with that. Now I know I loose 3" of screen but I can bump the resolution back up if needed for Photoshop or something using a lot of screen real estate.

I do web design and programming so I'm looking at text a lot so it's important to me to have font sizes looking good without doing a lot of adjustment. I also find that the web sites themselves look to small on the higher res screens... Will I get used to the higher res/ small fonts? Maybe but if I get the 15" Hi-Res I have no options and with the 17" I have two good resolutions to work with when working on the MacBook directly with out an attached monitor.

If the problem is just hard to read fonts, can you jsut use the multitouch trackpad to pinch\Spread to enlarge fonts in chrome\safari\firefox.
Thats what I do right now with my macbook AIR and it works brilliantly

why on earth would you go back to a 1440x900 after having a 1680x1050 is beyond me. Apple offering the hi res screen was on of the key factors in my decision to order the new MBP

Love my screen. I've always liked smaller, sharper font. It's weird to hear people Who complained when the resolution was lower and now complain when it's higher. I think this board is littered with habitual cry babies.

Can't you just change the resolution? Are there any issues if you just change the resolution?

Sorry, I've never used a MBP.

the native resolution of the panel is 1680x1050, or 1440 x900. Anything else will look blurry and not right. sorry for the lack of technical explanation.

Yeah, it's blurry and streched.

Why the hell are you talking about iPad here ?? My eyes are jsut not good enough to be able to read confortably such a resolution on a 15" display ! I'm not defending/attacking whatsoever.

The zoom is not an option for me. I can read everything on the 1680x1050 but I just have to force my eyes to focus all the time which after some hours is very unconfortable.

Actually, I've just reinstalled OSX, put the MBP back to the box and on Monday I will send it back and order the other one. (I'm typing from my gf's macbook)

cheers ;)
