This would be very useful if someone could research this for me.

Using a 1440x900 MBP, at what font size would i need to set Firefox to in able to emulate what the font size would look like on a HD-AG MBP. (Preferences > Content > Fonts. You may have to go to Advanced > allow pages to chose their own fonts)

This would be useful for the 1440x900 users to test out what the font would look like in FF.

well i returned my standard for a high-res. although i wear glasses, i didn't have a problem with the 17" so i hope i don't have a problem with this new one coming soon. but i can't say this thread hasn't worried me :(

what was the res of the 17"

when choosing a high res screen on the apple website they indicating it is helpful when using pro apps like final cut. most will not get high res 3rd party retailers do not carry them and i think the apple store only cares anti glare in high res. that means high res glossy must be ordered

I'm 28 and I do wear glasses. Usually have have no problems reading things in a everyday life. I can also spend some time without glasses without problem (eg I wear sometimes sunglasses during the summer )

I think the 1680*1050 in 15" is entirely manageable, the screen font is not that much smaller and in fact bigger than in Windoze machine (not that that is a reference). Even in my WUXGA 1920*1200 modded 15" MBP fonts still look great; it also depends on how sharp and how good the contrast on your lcd panel is.

Hi,
I just got my 15" high res and I have a serious doubt about the resolution. Without making the font bigger in firefox/safari I found it quite difficult to read and I'm thinking about returning it and getting a 1440x900 screen.

On the other hand, I really like the fact than more things can fit on the screen.

My usage of the MBP is surf, movies, xCode, Eclipse, GarageBand and games in BootCamp

I ordered the MBP on the 13th and received it only today so I think I don't have much days left to decide if I return it or not. Basically I have to decide till tomorrow.

Any advices ?

Thanks,
Tex

Id keep it - Safari remembers which sites you "enlarge"

I don't understand the OPs point.

Is it not obvious that the same size font on a higher-res machine, using the same display size will look smaller?

Well yes .. they do look smaller. That's why I had problems with the hi res and that's why I returned the MBP.

Isn't Resolution Independence coming in 10.7? And won't it fix this?

Was references to it in Tiger, we thought it was definitely coming in Leopard. Now nothing in Snow Leopard.

OS X 10.7 could be over a year away..

Out of the people who returned the hi-res screens - did you get a chance to actually go to a store and use the hi-res model first? Or did you guys order it without seeing it in person?

I ask because I went to the store and used one for a while on two separate occasions and didn't have a problem with the font size. Hopefully that doesn't change when I get it home and it's sitting on my desk.

It is prolonged use and everyday use that I started to realise the fonts were too small.

I sit back from the screen and things like the menu bar, bookmarks in Safari etc become a strain to focus on. I can see them, focus fine, but it is a strain. It isn't easy on the eyes.

Each to their own..

I'd far rather have 1440x900 on my 15" display and have a big external display (of similar PPI) for when I need more screen real estate.

At worst, you can go to the Apple store, open up the preferences and switch the screen resolution to half.

Effectively Doubling the size of the text for everything.

Might not be the optimal solution, but if changing the text/icon sizes in Finder, Use universal access zoom for quick blow menu blow ups (key modifier for zooming at cursor) don't work ... chopping the screen resolution in half might be a workable hack. And switching back to full res for movie is still easy, since all this can be done from the menu bar.

Most apps do have a zoom feature, though people complain they have bad eyesight and rarely if ever learn where the browser, office apps, and others zoom the text you are working with.

Usually using Pages/Words/Preview/Adobe I maximize the current window to the computer screen width and click Fit Page Width which zooms the page to the width of the screen quick.

Again funny how many people sit at their computer squinting at the screen trying to read a document in a tiny window.

yes I ordered it without seeing it first. When I booted the mac for the 1st time, I knew after some minutes this wasn't a good choice.

Why is it so hard for people to realise that LCD's do not look good when they aren't at their native resolution? Dropping the resolution down simply isn't an option.

Interesting, well I guess I'll see for myself tomorrow.

As it stands I already have to wear classes (i'm near-sighted) for my 13" Macbook when I'm ~18 inches from the screen. Without glasses I can barely make out letters without squinting, and that's 1200x800.

+1 It's not the 1st one someone here advices to "simply" drop the resuolution and then problem solved.

@Sun Baked, go to an Apple Store and try it.

So even though I purchased the high res AG without seeing it, and it's on a airplane right now from China, I went down to our main Apple store to see it in person. Wow, it's simply gorgeous. I loaded up a couple of websites where I knew the font was smaller and just zoomed in on them and it looked just fine. Spoke to the Apple employee and the first thing out of his mouth was, "THEY ARE ALL SOLD OUT" and had a giant grin on his face. I said that's ok, I have one coming to me next week and he was like oh. After he realized he couldn't make a sale out of me, we chatted for a bit. His personal opinion of the high-res was that it's the smartest thing Apple could do for the 15" line. We put the standard res and high-res together, and it just completely solidified my purchase.

Can't wait til next Tues.

My 2 Canadian cents

If you are having trouble reading something, it is an option, might not look the best and really show up how font smoothing works.

But it is an option since the days of really low resolution 640x480 screens on Mac Laptops are gone.

Of course, the option is a Hackintosh with a cheap screen.

I received my 15" i7 MBP today with the AG display and I have to say I'm extremely pleased with it. The fonts are definitely smaller than on my 13" MacBook running 1280x800 (totally expected) but I don't find them too small. It seems to be just right for me (I've been sitting here for four hours straight using it.)

I was worried after reading all the complaints, but I don't find the font to be THAT much smaller than my old MacBook. Just slightly. i'm loving the extra screen space and am so happy to be rid of the reflections!

good for you ;)

Isn't Resolution Independence coming in 10.7? And won't it fix this?

This is from another forum (Apple insider)

aken From the OS X Wiki:
------------------------------
10.0 -> 10.1 took 185 days (6 months)
10.1 -> 10.2 took 332 days (10 months)
10.2 -> 10.3 took 427 days (14 months)
10.3 -> 10.4 took 553 days (18 months)
10.4 -> 10.5 took 910 days (29 months)
10.5 -> 10.6 took 672 days (22 months)
------------------------------

So for me:

10.6 -> 10.7 estimate 711 days (23 months)

AKA: August 9th 2011 (probably delayed till 'end of summer')

What gaurantee is that Apple will provide Resolution Independence?

i'm tired of speculating and worse waiting...

Just increase the font size.

I played with a HR AG screen at the Apple store (still awaiting shipment of the MBP in my sign) and all was select the page in safari and reverse pinch- Voila! It increased the font size that easily! The HR AG screen looks so nice a crisp! I can't wait!:apple:
