If you don't like the 1680x1050, please return it to apple. That way, there will be refurbs available for people like me :> Or you can sell it to me. I have seen the screen in person and I have owned a thinkpad with such a resolution and really liked it. I did not think that the fonts were too small.

I'm confused by this problem. You can already change (up) the default font size for folders/icons on your desktop and in Finder windows.

And, hitting command+ in most any browser increases the font size for the entire browser, and it stays that way.

Is this just an issue with other programs' fonts?

I'm new to MacOS and am hesitating getting the anti glare because of fear the text will be too small.

What is this setting you have highlighted? Does that change font size in all of the OS menus and desktop? What is the difference between that and dpi scaling?

Yes it changes the icon size and the Finder text size. Before buying the hig res, you should 1st have a look at one in a shop if you have the possibility.

you can also change the font type in some of your apps. For example, I was using Dreamweaver in Code view, and I thought the text was way too small. By default it's set at Monaco, so I changed it to Courier 10pt and it looks 100x better

I too was worried about font size (actually high screen dpi) but decided to order the 17" glossy anyway. As it turns out I can read the default text size on most websites. In fact MacRumor's forum seems to be among the easiest to read - possibly because of the high contrast black text on white background. Anyway, there are some sites that I have problems with and for certain applications (like Yahoo Messenger) the fonts used are just a hair too small for me to read comfortably. I did look at the 17" (albeit matte) in the store and had no problem whatsoever reading anything on it. The big difference is in the Apple Store the 17" was on their table and I was viewing the screen from about 4" close than I view the screen with the computer sitting on my lap. When I'm looking at an application with a small font I find myself leaning closer to the screen and then it becomes perfectly clear.

So will I be exchanging my 17" or changing the resolution on it? Nope, not a chance. I love the extra screen real-estate. Instead I'm going to make an appointment with my eye doctor and get a prescription for some computer glasses. Computer glasses are much like reading glasses but instead of correcting vision in the near range (I can actually read extremely tiny print from up close) they correct vision in the mid-range (18" - 26"). I've been thinking about doing that for a while since I have my monitors at work setup very close to me which makes it annoying when dealing with dual 30" monitors.

I'll let folks know how the glasses work in a couple weeks when I get them.

That should tell a lot of people what they need to know about high res on the even smaller 15" screen.
Describing the effect as "increased real estate" on such a small screen is like a bald man saying a certain gel makes what few hairs he has more lush.

Well I do have a high res glossy ... plus I have a US keyboard but ordered in Germany. I think this is going to be fun to exchange.
I'm more and more convinced that I have to exchange it. I really have to force my eyes all the time :(

Ah, Tex... I think it is the time you return to the "Our MBP is stranded in Shanghai" thread again if you are ordering a US keyboard. I might return my 15" also to get a 17" if the Apple Store allows me to do so.

Yep, I've just called Apple and I'm waiting for an UPS call so that they pick it up. I ordered a new one so ... yes I might go back to the "Im waiting .." threads :) I also decided to try the 5400 tr/min HDD. Battery life is important for me and I'm planning to get an SSD in some months, until there 5400 will be ok.

Do you think Apple will allow you to hold the MBP first while waiting for the new one to arrive? I just hope I can do that as I don't have any computer to use during that time...

I'm surprised by the people having issues reading on the hi-res screens. I have pretty poor eye sight (I'm far sighted) and I wear glasses/contacts all of the time except when reading books. Maybe it's because I'm staring at my screen with perfect vision (because of my glasses) that makes reading a non-issue for me on the hi-res screen?

I went to the Apple store to check them out, and I didn't even realize I was using a hi-res one until I checked the display preferences. This was after reading some forums and news site for 15 minutes.

I agree though -- it sucks for those who wanted the lower res with the matte display.

If it's a return/exchange they will usually not release the replacement until they have been notified by UPS/Fedex that they've received the original computer from you. Once it's in the carrier's system, they release the replacement. It sounds like a bit of a different scenario here though.

In my case it's not a exchange but a refund. I haven't asked If I could keep it. To be honest I wanted to get rid of it asap :)

I picked up a 15" hi-res anti-glare yesterday morning. The screen was perfect until I used it last night when my eyes were tired. It was really uncomfortable and hard on my eyes. I don't want the glossy screen but I may have to consider swapping the hi-res for the low-res. :(

I had the same feeling. 1st I found it ok but late at night, after my eyes got tired and I had to do efforts to read.

Just out of curiosity - how old are you guys?

I don't have any experience reading the hi-res screen with tired eyes (mine arrives Thurs). I'll be happy to report back then.

I'm 28 and I do wear glasses. Usually have have no problems reading things in a everyday life. I can also spend some time without glasses without problem (eg I wear sometimes sunglasses during the summer )

I'm 38 and I wear glasses all the time. I always wear sunglasses outside. I'm a s/w developer so I stare at a screen all day.

Edit: It's possible I need new glasses. They might not be sitting right on the bridge of my nose so maybe I'm not getting proper vision when using them. I'm sure I'm due for an eye test anyway.

I have new glasses and made an eye test some months ago.

FYI, a TNT guy just picked up the MBP. It was pretty fast. I called Apple this morning.

I had to drop down to 1440 res from the 1080 (or whatever it is). The hi-res is just too hard on my eyes when I'm tired at night. I'll have to decide what to do - keep the 15" i7 anti-glare or risk changing for the glossy 15" low res.

So glad I'm not alone!

Lowering the resolution isn't an option, LCD's look naff when they aren't at their native resolution.

And I get tired eyes from staring at text that small..

In addition to the options others posted above, here's a fabulous way to keep larger fonts open in Safari. 95% of my complaints with the small fonts on the hi-res screen were with small fonts on web pages. The following option solves this wonderfully. It's under the preferences > advanced in Safari.

Basically, my only remaining complaint would be an (easy) way to increase the default font size in the OS X menus. Alas, no such solution currently exists as far as I can find.
