I enjoy my iPhone 5. It's better in every way: lighter (which is better if you're concerned about USING it rather than bragging over its heft), faster, thinner, better battery life, more durable (compared to 4S/4), best screen on a mobile device (accuracy, see AnandTech's analysis), bigger screen, and that sexy stealth black look.
Now, about the black: if your phone came with metal showing and/or is wearing quickly, take it back! As for me, it's fine after being with me since launch day in my pocket with no case (I don't let anything else in that pocket, that would be a rookie mistake). BUT, I too worry about scuffs, so I plan to deal with the eventuality by researching the best way to touch up the future scuff spots. It's that simple!
Oh, and I count the new Lightning connector as an improvement, but of course a bittersweet one that must be accepted if we are to adopt new tech. If one is so inclined, one never HAS to upgrade to a phone with a new and improved connector. As for me, I'll take the economic and party inconvenient hit that the new connector represents. But hey, I just enjoy the latest and greatest tech and so wouldn't complain about blatant progress like the new connector (especially knowing how old the 30-pin is). I mourn the obselecense of my original iPhone dock I've been using these five years, but cheer the progress to a new orientation-agnostic plug.
