Ok so for battery life i5, did everyone drain the battery first then over night charge ,then drain again? I did and I have great battery life on it. Yes on the LTE side the battery does move on juice a little bit faster than my 4S, but overall it lasts me from 5am-10pm with browsing, music, and posting on apple forums! Did this with my 4S and never had battery issues....just saying!

According to this "person" I shouldn't express my opinion about the iPhone 5 in the iPhone section, in a thread asking for an opinion on the iPhone 5 on a message board dedicated to everything Mac, and I presume therefore that neither should those who have done likewise in this thread.

I won't feed it anymore. It needs to go back to patrolling its bridge, and besides, I'm too busy feeding myself breakfast.

Your thread didn't ask for a single opinion. The original post is nothing more than a big rant about everything you don't like about your iPhone 5 and how you are returning it, with not one single question or topic for discussion. You were looking for hits. Feel better?

Apple does have a bit of a fundamental problems especially when they don't change the hardware design / look.

Not as long as millions try to get one and the minority that always wants something fresh is, well, a minority.

Many people just want what works for them, even if it isn't a revolution. That they want something new every 2 years is taken care of by the way the contracts work.

Usually you try to improve stuff and finally you have a good solution. And trying to change stuff might rather break what was fine, like the black aluminium might not have been a good idea (although it still reduces weight and increases stability).

I don't think aluminum comes off THAT easily. It could be a defect...

I've tested the 5. It looks lavish (the black one), but the overall feel does feel a bit lacking compared to the 4S (it lacks the kind of "solidness"). The screen is actually quite long, but overall definitely an appropriate size.

I am using an iPhone 4S and a Galaxy S2, and previously I would imagine how nice if the iPhone had a S2 sized screen with that amazing retina display.

But seriously I would prefer scratches on the aluminum than a giant crack on the iPhone glass.

No, there's a difference between the aluminum being susceptible to scratching (which is normal and also affected the original iPhone) and defective anodizing coating which is hypersensitive to scratching.

There is NO hypersensitivity. Anodized aluminum scratches easily if coated. 6 months from now you can buy a black iPhone and it will be the same.

heh heh, how do you know that Apple is not doing anything about the scuff gate problem. Given how many phone get returned because of scuffing, it is going to be the number one problem Apple is facing now. Those returned phones need to ship to a repair center, remove all the electronic from the shell, replace the shell and ship back to the store to be use as refurbished. All these steps cost a lot of Apple's money. My bet is that they are going over inventory now to make sure that no new phone shipped with the problem. And in parallel trying to figure out the root cause of the scuffing problem. Anodized Aluminum is much stronger than the problem that some of the users experience. Most of the scuffing problems seem to be around the antenna. So they need to figure out a way to harden the antenna.

You presume it's not normal. I think it is nd that Apple will have to change the case design to fix.

Apple's affinity for susceptible build in the name of lightness/thinness and its deficient scratch-prone finishes is what grew the case industry into scores of manufacturers and models to choose from.

I feel a bit disappointed lately with the iPhone. I had to replace my 4S due to crunchy/loud home button several months ago and I had to replace my new iPhone 5 last night because the silent switch freaks out on its own. The first replacement that was brought out was all smudged on the screen and would not respond to the tech's finger presses. Thus, I was given another replacement. NOW, I have to call apple and find out why my apple care didn't transfer to the new replacement.

When you spend a premium on a device, you expect it to work. This is probably going to be my last iphone simply because every release has its share of issues. I stayed with Apple because I thought their craftsmanship was worth the price but I see this declining as of late. It's a shame because I've invested so much in the app store.

I still think they're great devices but I admit to being caught up in the hype and being sorely disappointed with the release. Rattling camera lenses, busted light sensors, scratches and nicks out of manufacturing, wifi issues, poor battery performance ... to name a few.

I never sided with Apple or Android. I think they both have a lot to offer and with that being said, I might take a look at another vendor next time.

In comparison to the 4 or 4S, I love the design - the weight and the thickness feel far better in my hands than the brick like 4S.

I went from the 3GS which I love to the 4S which I never even liked (which is why I completely missed out getting a 4), to this one. To be perfect for me, the phone would be 2-3 mm wider and 2-3mm shorter as it would feel more balanced when texting in one hand, but that's just me. The download speeds I'm getting on Virgin are amazing, far faster than the 4S so I'm happy.

My real complaint is iOS6. Maps is useless (fortunately I've got Navigon) and the woosh sound saying emails have sent before they actually go is really starting to annoy me. What's the point of making the sound just to let you know you've clicked on Send??

The charging LED leaked down the screen. Sounds bad.

Didn't even know the iPhone had a charging LED?

Based upon APPLE'S VP comments I would say you are dead wrong. This is how it is.

The OP makes many valid points. It does feel like a toy, the connector did not have to change, the screen is only longer big whoop.

It has LTE (A PLUS).

Battery life has been reported to be worse (Thanks to LTE, A6 and smaller battery).

AND WHY DO THE CONNECTOR CONVERTERS COST $30 BUCKS????????????

$5 would have quelled the complaints.

PROFIT-PROFIT-PROFIT

The point in the complaints is in the choice of anodized aluminum. Apple could have easily made the case more rugged. Again its Apple choosing form over function.

BTW...not everyone know the ups and downs of anodized aluminum. We should not have too..all we should know is that the case does not wear or scratch easily in a short period of time.

Why does every one assume that a return means bye bye iphone. The 4S is still available and viable.

Frankly some of you are just being way to defensive of Apple. If you like the 5 great, but respect the fact that some don't (for very valid reasons).

I in no way said that you were leaving IOS. Simply, good luck with whatever phone you switch to. My comments about the tension that seems to arise between Android/IOS folks was just an observation.

There is NO hypersensitivity. Anodized aluminum scratches easily if coated. 6 months from now you can buy a black iPhone and it will be the same.

Various tests including a member's video in which he deliberately tried to damage an at&t display iPhone indicate otherwise. Yes, it scratches but not that easily.

Hello,
I also wanted to say that I actually do prefer the industrial design of the iPhone 4, but the Gorilla Glass backplate was just too fragile. All the same, as I have a Wireless N Network at home and LTE is just about to be available in my area, the hardware upgrades to the 5 make it far more appealing to me.
Cheers,
JJ

This. There is something seriously wrong with the coating Apple is using for the aluminum.

Are you people buying these phones so you can look cool with your new toy or are you buying it because it is a great piece of equipment? Good lord. So what if it scratches. I dropped mine the other day and it is still working perfectly. Maybe I got a tiny ding, maybe I didnt, I dont really care because the phone STILL Works like it is new.

IThe touch screen has been problematic from the getgo, often needing to be touched 4 or 5 times to get a reaction..

I am having some touch glitches. I assume its my thumb memory not reaching to the right spot due to changes from the 4 to 5. But When I glance at what I'm typing I'll notice missing spaces and letters. Even when I'm certain I pressed correctly.

Correct, as I stated to another thing that lives under a bridge earlier on, I didn't ask for an opinion. It was a statement.
The clue was in the title of the thread - I asked if anyone who owned an iPhone 5 was planning on ditching it. You didn't have to read it or respond if it didn't apply to you.

As for "rant", I don't think even the most hysterical person would describe a calm and collected objective review of a product I own and its failings as I (and others it seems!) see them a "rant".

Didn't even know the iPhone had a charging LED?

I had my late night / long day head on when I wrote that. The battery level monitor is of course white, but none the less, there is a yellow dribble that starts around the monitor and runs down the side of the screen on my old 4S.

I'm on day 7 with my iPhone 5. Black model. I have 8 scuffs on the chamfered edge. It came out of the box prestine. I have treated my iPhone with extreme care. Apple has screwed up here. I can't believe how scratched up the edge gets even with delicate care.

I love everything else about the 5. But you will need to use a case or bumper unless you are okay with accumulating scuffs. Apple is rightly going to get a lot of backlash over this.

So I went back to my network's store today and showed them the phone. They were very unsurprised. Apparently they've had over 70% return and counting on pre-ordered blacks they've handed out from their store alone since launch day with the same problem, and some had further issues with touch screens and wifi.
But all had scuffs to the outer band edges where the black had lifted to reveal the aluminium beneath. Some phones came out of the box like it. Some were even dented.

I've ordered a white 32GB which arrives tomorrow and I'll see how I go with that for a week, but if I don't like that it can go on fleabay for a profit.

I think this problem is going to run and run for Apple somehow!

Made in China...

The quality of this device has pushed me away from apple, because frankly that was one of the biggest driving points that I appreciated about apple until now. But I'll be da**ed if I spend 900 dollars on a device with a declining ecosystem (maps), wifi that doesn't work reliably... (not network, but my own damn wifi at work and home.), less durability over the previous generation (chipped/scratched edges), and shoddy workmanship, (poor response of touch screen, etc...)

I'm out my friends... selling my i5 on ebay and ordered the HTC One X...

Sounds like defective anodizing coating. Get it swapped.

iPhone 5 - one big con by apple. they cant think of nothing new.

????

What were the iPhone, iPad and the Macbook Air? If that's your argument, who IS thinking of something new? Who has supplanted Apple in innovation in their market segment, on a tangible, global scale? Big ideas, unlike opinions and a$$holes, are not as common as you'd like to believe they are.

What so you're gonna sell a defective 5?
