Anyone else noticing the increase in suspensions? Maybe it's just me but I sure see a lot more "Suspended" under usernames than I've seen in a long time. We chalking this up to Daylight savings time? :p

Maybe it's like being pregnant, or buying a car - when you're pregnant, all you see is baby buggies. When you've just bought a car, you suddenly see that car everywhere. Suspensions are being discussed, you see suspensions everywhere. ;)

Funny, I rarely even notice it unless I have a reason to look.

Really? I follow a set number of people and I've noticed more people I follow having Suspended under their name than usual. Kinda sucks when I spend most of my time reading their threads.

I'll chalk it up to what AnnK said.
Interesting, I never really follow people outside of just reading posts, is there a view to show just who you follow?

As for the suspensions here, this is what I'm learning... If I make a post and think to myself "hmm, I wonder if this will get me suspended?" even in the slightest, it will get me suspended. YMMV.

I follow a set number of people...

Someone discovered in another SFF thread that the forum software shows the total number of people you follow, but if you count names on the list it only shows those you follow who are not suspended. You are following 46 people, but only 40 are shown in the list. So six people you follow are suspended.

Ahh okay, I can see your point now BigMcGuire, it sticks out like a sore thumb in that view.

Most of what is posted in PRSI is conservative bashing. Now that the word is getting out that people are getting banned they are wording things differently, but the point was nobody would report someone for bashing conservatives, but a sarcastic remark the other direction would likely get reported multiple times.

I’ve never felt the need to report people, hell someone called me an arrogant ass a couple of weeks ago here, I haven’t lost any sleep over it.

I feel like I have to be very careful in PRSI. I'm a centrist but sometimes my opinion is very opposed to certain views at times. So I've felt that I have to speak more diplomatically, watering down my words. I'm not mad at this but I do know that my skin has to stay thick.

As soon as I say who I voted for, I open up to a verbal assault. So I've learned that keeping a cool head is my only chance. I find that admitting when a person has a good point instead of going on offense diffuses the situation.

Politics and social issues are like walking over landmine riddled fields.

Thick skin is a great but those who don't have it will report you and that puts you dead center on the mods radar. There's no way they have time to sift through all the posts to see who's out of line, etc. so they rely on these reported posts, I get that.

I would also like to see more of a "you guys stop acting like this and work it out" approach by a mod rather than just having suspensions handed out like candy. It let's you know you're being monitored and to get a grip, most of us in that forum are guilty of stepping out of line after getting heated from time to time and that sort of intervention would go a long way IMO.

Thanks for the info! Very cool.

Interesting, I never really follow people outside of just reading posts, is there a view to show just who you follow?

I've been getting in the habit of just seeing who is online that I follow on the bottom right, clicking on their name, find all posts and just reading that. The people I follow tend to have a similar liking to what I like, or in some cases, I find reading posts of people who I don't necessarily agree with interesting. Not too many threads on my hobbies (battery charge cycles/usage, etc...). :p

As you know I am trying to slowly get back into PRSI without getting anyone suspended again but I'm finding that like @Septembersrain and you said in posts above, things have to be kept VERY civil or suspensions seem to follow near instantly by those who (I assume) don't agree with you. Like Septembersrain said - it seems to be a fairly hostile place and the mods seem to put a lot of work into keeping it as "friendly" as possible. So I'll probably just try to read instead of post or risk wasting the Mod's time. Or if I post I'll go out of my way to be as agreeable / nice as possible.

I didn't become a contributor to waste the mod's time - I'd rather like to try to help this site because out of all the forums I've been to over the last few decades or so - this one is the best (but nothing is without flaws).

I can definitely agree with this. PRSI will always have the most extreme opinions butting heads. However, there is also the element of gang mentality.

Unfortunately it is a lot like bullying. Using mods to further an all out assault on someone is wrong but I agree that some do that at times.

It makes it easy to extenuate to the thin skinned individuals who report frivolously.

possible.

IMO the only one's wasting the mods time are those reporting trivial spats that would otherwise resolve themselves.

I'd definitely agree there. It sours what would have otherwise been a great experience (especially if it ended positively).

I've noticed too that when a user is suspended you can't search for them in the search either - they don't show as a valid username. It's like they disappear off the face of the planet for awhile.

People are getting suspended left and right in PRSI under the new rules, so maybe you're seeing an effect from that.

Yeah...it's kind of weird to have to remain completely 100% civil, like you're discussing a sunset, when trying to discuss a topic like school shootings and gun control.

I can definitely agree with this. PRSI will always have the most extreme opinions butting heads. However, there is also the element of gang mentality.

Mods should only have to get involved when there is a flat out, obvious personal attack on someone. Simply telling someone their opinion is ridiculous or that they sound like a conspiracy theorist should not rise to the level of ban. But it does. Personally, I find that ridiculous and overbearing.

Not sure what a trivial spat is...a little bickering? Maybe? Ad-Homs? No way. There should not be latitude for throwing insults or personal attacks. Or even some of the tired memes thrown around meant to be derogatory in a generalized way, toward a group of unknown people...eg fandroid or isheep. My $.02.

The question is though...what exactly constitutes an "ad hominem". I've been accused of ad hominem attacks for saying "You love Trump's lying" (I mean, the guy pretty much said it), that someone sounded like a corner preacher, and for saying that country folk with their rifles are not the same thing as lifetime fighters in Afghanistan, amongst many others.

The new rules don't seem to be working as the same trolls are still in there and allowed to post their propaganda with no repercussions. Meanwhile trying to call out said propaganda and false stories gets a suspension. Seems that the inmates have been allowed to run the forum and the honest posters get punished for it.

That seems (my guess) to fall under “talking about the poster”. You could say, “I don’t believe....”, and debate the response, rather than the poster, and/or discuss Trump and keep the poster out of it.

That's not how the rules are being enforced though. Just making mention of anything calling out Trump or anyone associated with him is against the rules now it seems.

I post in PRSI now and then and I make sure I discuss/debate the topic only. You can disagree on a post in a civil manner is the point.

But when the topics themselves are loaded debates with the intent to troll how can you have a civil discussion. The whole idea of the post is to troll the other side with false information there is no way to counter it. There is an abundance of fake news that is pro Trump that has taken over the forum and it seems to be allowed now.

Somehow, lol, you have to dig deep and find an acceptable response. In a hot button topic debate there are always counterpoints. Think of the candidates’ debates for the presidency. And if you believe the op has been trolling and has a history of it, report it. You’ve been around here for a long time, congrats on that, you should be able to run rings around fake news with alacrity.

You would think that it would be obvious that certain posters just want to troll the rest. But for some reason these people go untouched.

lol I think this thread is giving the mods a work out :p. (Not like they need it).

In response to the above posts between MacNut and i7guy --- I've had the opportunity to hear political discussions between people in real life and they almost always turn out bad. May be my luck but I've seen people lose their jobs because of their political beliefs (OK, may not have been the primary cause but was a "cause"). This makes me extremely hesitant to talk about my own political beliefs ... at all. I have no problem listening to other people tell me what they think and find listening to those who don't hold my beliefs to be the most interesting.

That said, I'm 32 so I'm not very old but it seems like this latest political environment, to be in support of one political party has encouraged? (is that the right word?) a reaction that I've found to be more hostile than I've ever seen. And I don't mean to type this to encourage debate or conflict - it's just what I've seen. I've seen college protests in person that have gotten extremely violent where blood was involved. I've been yelled at and threatened for walking by protestors just because I didn't support them - not wearing any political clothing myself.

Just seems like things are getting worse in that department - maybe that's why there are more suspensions here?

But in today's current political environment I usually keep my views to myself because of the environment - I know that when I voted for my first president, it wasn't anywhere near this crazy.

I can see some spill over from that to the forums.

If you find yourself continually being admonished by a moderator, it might behoove you to take stock of your own actions, instead of seeking to blame someone else.

You are responsible for what you post on this forum. It doesn't matter what others may or may not do. It only matters what you do. If you find that your posts tend to get too personal and cross the rules line, make a point to only respond on subject. If you feel that someone you want to respond to has violated the rules, report the post and do not respond in kind. Exercise some personal responsibility and self-control.
There is such a thing as over moderation. I’m not referring on the OP or anyone being picked on; I’m referring to the fact some moderators are particularly seinsitive when it comes to certain topics and will be much quicker to black hole your comments than other mods.
