Just to name a few that are tight with Apple:

That's a good list. Joanna Stern is very clever, tbh I really like MKBHD too.
Agree. can’t stand the click bait thumbnails, I don’t understand how making a stupid facial expression translates into more clicks. But apparently it does since more and more people are doing it, even reviewers that I never considered the click bait type are doing it.
Rene Ritchie talked about this in one of his recent videos with Georgia Dow: he apparently tried running exactly the same video with different titles/thumbnails, got significantly more engagement / longer viewing times with the "clickbait" thumbnails/titles even though the content was the same. He also talked about other "tricks of the trade" like always going through lists of points in reverse order (e.g. if video is "5 things you didn't know about the iPhone 12" always go through from 5 to 1, not 1 to 5) otherwise people stop watching after you've talked about the first 2-3 points. It's weird how people's minds work...

Wow that dude from unbox therapy got 7.4 million views and counting for sticking a mock up of an iPhone 12 in your face on his thumbnail. I’ve watched him off and on over the years. His Channel exploded back in 2014-2015 when he made his famous videos of him bending the iPhone 6. He probably single handedly had Apple use series 7000 aluminum on next years iPhone 6s and 6s plus. He was still under a millions subs and now today, 5-6 years later, he has 17.3 million subs. He has the most ginormous tech channel on YouTube

Pile of dung = lots of flies

Even when the phones are released there will be dozens of videos that will all say the exact same thing. The usual suspects will present their reviews on top of a white desk while they ohhh and ahh and read off generic facts and benchmarks. Everything apple pro is not a pro, not even close. The same goes for Marques and Justine. They are three of the worst reviewers on YouTube. I’ll wait for my usual favorites such as The Verge, CNET, and Engadget. Dieter makes great reviews in his little apartment with minimal equipment all while having more charm than the three other reviewers I mentioned combined. That’s what separates Youtubers from professionals.

let’s not paint it at all with a broad brush stroke. There is some channels that are independent media like Jimmy Dore that I would watch over propaganda media like CNN

Some exceptions exist to every rule. In a broader review, most things on YT are as bad as old fashioned TV, but done by amateurs thinking they know it all.
And just like Americans are used from their gazillions of crap TV channels, it’s all cluttered with ads every 3 minutes.

Nevertheless some make a decent living through subscribers and views.

And that’s the whole point on why the resort to tactics that earn them the most click and views. It’s their bread and butter, it’s how they earn their living. Why would they do something that will earn them less clicks?

I do YouTube videos on and off and it’s not easy as it takes a lot of time to come up with the content, record, edit etc so it’s a full time job cranking out videos the way iJustine or Marques do.

I understand a lot of what people pointed out here and how frustrating click bait gets though. And I agree that some of the reviews look half assed.

What frustrates me personally is that you can tell that they’ve only spent no more than an hour with the product and then they rush their reviews to be the first to get the most views and likes by being on top of YouTube’s search engine on what’s trending. The reviews that I enjoy are the ones who spend at least a week, or even a month so get as much real world personal experience instead of reading what’s on a spec sheet or press release.

And finally, the trend these days is focusing more on fancy cinematography vs actual content. Take for example iPhonedo on his Razer Blade 17 review here:

I’m actually a fan of his reviews but in this video, he focuses more on the fancy intro and editing but in the”review” he says almost nothing about gaming performance on a gaming laptop. He spends most of his time talking about upgradeability and the aesthetics but doesn’t compare it to anything, no benchmarks, and other stuff gamers will care about. Total cringe when I saw that video. But when he actually does put effort into actual content, it’s really good.

Anyway, my 2cents. Drop a like and subscribe 😂

CNN at least has Republican contributors on-staff and have segments everyday for some semblance of balance. FOX needs to be the first out of anyone’s mouth if you wanna talk about the holy grail of propaganda TV. I better be careful, don’t want to take this too off the rails topically. And I guess it’s all personal perspective anyway.

my biggest beef is clicking through a few videos hoping to gain some sort of insight into the phone announcements from people who i would expect are following the industry closer than i am, and its literally just them reading apple's posted specs with no added value. and of course because they're rushing to get content out as quick as possible they'll even misspeak sometimes in reading those specs, so it actually becomes negative value.

i appreciate its a difficult year without the usual hands on sessions, but still... if you can't bring a unique perspective or personality to the table in talking about something, it all just turns into noise.

YouTubers Workflow:
Buy it. Unbox it. Recommend it. Return it.

What I find most frustrating are YouTubers who buy products with full intention of returning it. They film their beauty shots, recommend this $300-$3000 device to viewers, return it and use the YouTube profits to upgrade their studio lighting. it’s just such a dangerous and sleazy thing to do.

I hate that too! TailosiveTech admitted he does this. It’s so scammy!!!

I believe all tech reviewers do this who don’t receive review units

There’s always going to be a market for the stupid. Be it politics, tv, sports, and yes even YouTube. If you don’t like it, tune it out, avoid, don’t watch and go about your life. Problem solved.
They pollute my search results and recommendations, it’s unavoidable. And the solution is to avoid all of it altogether, that’s ridiculous.

Most of them are annoying. The worst are where they just show themselves on camera then talk over Apple footage of the event or even just showing a pan over of the apple website. Talk about not adding any additional info at all.

My favorites are Flossy and iJustine. Yeah Justine is a bit dramatic but I get the feeling she really does legitimately get excited about new products.

The always annoying iJustine who acts like she's going to have an org*** every time she unboxes an Apple product!

She’s just ridiculous but then again I’m a grown up. Teenagers probably think she is very knowledgeable and that that faked excitement is for real and for good reason.
