Aight ..heres the deal.

The retina Mac will have no problems playing any games, obviously you're not gonna be playing competitive BF 3 with ultra settings at 100FPS + with 3 external monitors, but if you really want that you're an idiot for even considering the mac.

The retina Mac is for video editing, photo, 3D software and so on, and some people who does these kind of things also play games, and that is no problem at all, this laptop can handle it, it's a good all-in-one laptop, especially considering the wight and thinness of the product. Yes the retina display will bottleneck the GPU if you go native resolution, but guess what? you can go 1920x1200, or lower than that and it still looks great!

If you want everything maxed out, build your own computer, it's really not that hard to think. Alienware isn't exactly cheap either, and no offense, but they are darn ugly, and yes, design matters to people, not just performance.

I haven't had a chance to play any games on this laptop but from the videos online it looks like it play most games really well at a normal resolution. I bet it will run games even better once Nvidia officially releases drivers for the GPU.

If someone wanted a gaming system, I wouldn't recommend any laptop. If they insisted, I wouldn't recommend a MBP but I also wouldn't recommend Alienware. There are better systems out there. The MBP can run games, that doesn't make it a gaming system.

Don't get me wrong, I love video games. But I can't help but roll my eyes when I see people complaining about MacBook Pros not having good enough cards for games. I guess it makes me feel less bad about spending so much money on something I actually use for my job, though.

Doesnt matter what apple puts in the laptop. If they put gtx80m in the macbook pro people would complain it gets hot or why can't it be thinner. If put the card in there and kept it thin they would bitch it costs to much. No matter what you will troll and complain. Try to find some happiness in life other than nit picking tech. Go outside and meet a girl. lol

I'm actually blown away by the new GPU; it runs circles around my 2011 17 MacBook Pro. I'm running D3 @ 2040 x 1280 with all settings maxed plus shadows at medium at 45 fps+... awesome! Can't wait to boot camp this bad boy up for Skyrim :)

My point is that it is supposed to be a high performance laptop... I love OSX, I love the design of the MacBook pro, ect. It just seems odd to me that people who aren't in creative media are so eager to fork over so
Much $$$$ for a laptop that can only surf the web and email in a pretty case. Apple seems to be turning into a company that values form over function, not the best of both

Its the fact that the MacBook Air at this point has enough power for the majority of my design activities and that OS X has better software. I hope you configure the M17x with a SSD (which makes it much more expensive than the pro) or your precious M17x will actually be much slower than our laptops that can only surf the web.

The 650m will run any current game in 1440x900 at high settings, and most of them even at 1080p. No idea what people are complaining about.

Because they are idiots who can't afford the rMBP and have to invent bad things to say about it.

GT650m =

40fps+ fps Diablo 3 on high settings
40fps+ Battlefield 3 on high settings
Great performance on Skyrim on Ultra settings
Etc, etc, etc.

Those fps' are at 1920x1200 or similar resolution. And before anyone whines that it's not the native res, please show me the Alienware or Asus that runs games at 2880x1800. This machine not being able to game is a dead issue.

Ur asking for a better video card in a thin laptop, when ur saying ur m17x has something better, when it can be used to club someone to death.

ROTFLMAO! I just almost choked to death on my toast laughing here:D

I just don't get why mac users hate starcraft2 :p nearly no actual numbers, no videos, nothing..... whyyyy!?!?! feed me info dammit! :p

I don't get it. If you want to play games you don't get a Mac it's been that way for years.
Sure you can run a game on low settings but why would you do that if gaming is your main priority? For cheaper or the same price you can get a laptop with way better specs for gaming.

Look into ASUS G55VW if you want a nice 15" gaming laptop. Or the new Lenovo Y580. I completely advise against Alienware.

I completely agree with you, I'd also recommend MSI and Sager as possible options as well.

I was curious how much an Asus G55 would cost if configured with similar configuration of my rMBP (except the Asus had a better video card). Cost was $2400 and weighed over 8 lbs.

So basically, if gaming is your priority, MBP is not it but if gaming is a secondary thing (like for myself), then the MBP is an option.

Because I want to play games AND be able to pick up chicks in the coffee house at the same time!

Not gonna happen with a 12lb plastic POS with a power brick the size of a watermelon (which you need to offset the 20 minute battery life).

I don't get why people are saying games need to be run at low settings on this machine. It's misinformation plain and simple.

Where did you put together a configuration? I've been looking but can't find a place to customize it. Unless I'm just blind

There are some companies out there that sell them customized. Xoticpc.com is one of them. I've been trying to nudge my husband towards one for himself since he wants a laptop but doesn't travel. So a thicker, 6-8 lb laptop isn't an issue for him.

You don't but the 650m will 'age' faster in terms of gaming than a 'gaming' system. My computer I bought 3 years ago was great for games built 3 years ago. The newer games out though, I have to run on low settings for any half decent performance.

The RMBP can run games just fine. Gaming laptops like Clevos and Alienwares with the 7970M are just an overkill if you're just doing moderate gaming. If you're looking into hardcore gaming, why the hell would you even look at a Macbook? Yes it'll run games fine, like starcraft 2 and diablo 3, but don't expect it to run toe to toe with gaming bricks.

I agree with this. However I think a lot of people are looking for a gaming rig this year because they're interested in the current crop of games that are out there. It's a bit of a golden age right now with Diablo 3, Skyrim, Civ 5, and BF3, to name a few. I for one can see myself playing this set of games for several years on a current gen machine, and for that the rMBP is perfect.

I don't know, there are always 'new' games. I like gaming although I don't have an interest in any of those games you list (well except maybe Civ 5 but the previous Civs were better). I think you'd be fooling yourself if you don't think in 3 years, there will be 'hot' games that are must haves for heavy gamers.

try xoticpc, I would go for sager, since the difference in power between the 670m and the 7970m or 680m is just too great to go for a ''gaming '' pc like the G series from asus
