What do you mean you have no idea if everything is in focus? You can look at the screen if you have an iPhone. The iPhone screen gets more than enough bright in direct sunlight.

I understand what you’re saying but I trust Apple in matters like this. This is directly from their website.

I believe they have done their home work and we will see how good it is in little over a month.

I use sunglasses, and in direct sunlight, with sunglasses on, it could be better. Not saying that it's absolutely need it (I recognize that not everyone wears sunglasses), but it could definitely be improved.

I've notched that this spec used to be a big deal, but things have changed. After a certain point it's moot. 600 nits, 1200 nits, 2 million nits (God help us!) Overkill? 😀 Oh, and the sly Samsung keeping the 'good' screens for themselves theory, is getting old.

Well they just upgraded the Apple watch series 2 screen to have a 1000 nit OLED screen, so that 1) shows that outdoor use in direct sunlight can definitely benefit from higher brightness, and 2) apple chose not to put a brighter display in the iPhone X.

Every time I tried it, it would always end up slightly above minimum brightness despite the fact that I was in absolute darkness. That tells me it's garbage. Minimum and maximum are insanely simple, it's everything in between that is much more difficult, but of course they couldn't even do minimum right.

What you mentioned is basically the only flaw I have with auto brightness, but it is a pretty annoying one. I always have to set the brightness manually to 0, when in a very dark area; since Auto brightness seems to never bring it below that 20-25% mark. Other than that, I think it works exceptionally well.

Jim Dalrymple over at The Loop has this to say about True Tone on the iPhone 8 display -

"It means that the iPhone is continuously adjusting the screen, using a four-channel ambient light sensor, to match the color temperature of the light around you. To put it even simpler: you can read your iPhone in direct sunlight."

This is what I'm hoping for on the iPhone X as well. I guess we'll know in a couple months or when test units start getting reviewed.

Yeah, I'm totally making this up. I've never been outside in direct sunlight with any iPhone to take pictures ever. You got me. I confess.

You know, we're not a bunch of Android fanatics here just to complain about every tiny perceived imperfection of the latest iteration of an Apple offering. We're actual users that love the product and part of loving it is recognizing when improvements are needed. That's what adults do. The brightness of the OLED panel might be a great improvement over LED. We don't know yet. We do know that the current one, for some of us, is not quite bright enough in direct sunlight on the panel.

Your willingness to jump in and defend Apple is commendable. We're all on board with that here. I'm sure many of us have thrown down hard to explain to people that a lot of the competition are just bad copies of great Apple design.

We're users with real world experience. I don't think you understand that or care to.

Not jumping to defend Apple. I’m simply saying the screen in all currently sold iPhones get more than bright enough in direct sunlight for users to see well enough to compose a shot.

Wanting it brighter is a personal preference, but the fact is it does get bright enough in direct sunlight to see what’s happening on screen before you take a picture.

You just made my point. You wear sunglasses and you prefer that the screen be a bit brighter, but that doesn’t mean the screen brightness is inefficient, you’re wearing sunglasses...

As for the Apple Watch it has a higher brightness ceiling is because it’s much smaller with finer details you need to read at a father distance than you would on your phone.

I think you're stretching your point. I simply provided my personal example of where the screen could be brighter. I'm sure there are several other scenarios for various people that also could see value in a brighter screen.

Dude, shades or tint of any kind is either meant for privacy or to block light. You're wearing shades and wishing that the screen could be brighter? Seriously?

Um, there is plenty of good reason to both wear sunglasses when viewing you phone, and want the screen to be brighter...

I wonder what that could be... hmmm.....

Could it be when you are outside in the sun, want to wear sunglasses to protect from harmful UV rays, but still want to see your screen clearly???

You want to block the light from your eyes and you want the iPhone light to not be blocked?? Sounds like some new fancy sunglasses. Good luck on that....

Apple makes the iPhone screen more than bright enough to be seen in direct sunlight. If you are wearing shades or sun glasses that is made to block out sunlight, how can you complain that your phone screen isn't bright enough. That's a personal issue.

I’ve only answered your rhetorical question of why someone would want a brighter screen you could see with sunglasses on. Outside, when you want to protect against UV rays but still use your phone without taking sunglasses off.

I'm not even talking about the iPhone X either, and I am not asking why someone would want a brighter screen. You have not been reading what I have been posting. I have owned all iPhones and use them extensively every day, and a lot of times in the sun because I do photography on my phone. What I am telling you is the iPhone screen brightness is not a problem is not a problem in direct sunlight. The screen that Apple receives from Samsung, LG or any other partners is exactly what they ordered and was built to their specifications. The notion that you have that Samsung may not be supplying them with the best technology because they are competitors is a huge pile of unfounded crap. No one is saying we don't want better features, screen brightness is not a dire need. Quit, you sound silly.
 
Manual brightness can be set at 100% which is 25% less than the maximal brightness the phone can attain. The 25% brightness is only accessible by the system when auto brightness is set and there is very high ambient light, which is completely understandable. However, if the engineers were smart then manual brightness being set to 100% would TURN ON auto-brightness (not known but hidden) until the user adjusts the brightness below 100%. When the manual brightness is set to 100% and auto brightness turns on, it will use the ambient light sensor to judge whether it should adjust the brightness into the 25% off limits zone. When the ambient light falls back down, it adjusts back to a minimum of 100% or it turns off if the user adjusts the brightness below 100%.

I can't describe it any simpler.

Any additional brightness is extremely minimal. How did you come up with 25% unused?

The system you describe is still subject to battery life and screen burnout issues.

If my iPad’s screen is anything to go by, the system worked very well in Central Park a few weeks ago. Me and my friend played the game clue. I wouldn’t read extensively though.

When Apple announced the iPhone 7, they stated it had 25% higher brightness than the iPhone 6s. Absolutely none of that 25% can be used if a user does not have auto brightness turned on. My solution solves the problem because I’m far more intelligent than the Apple engineers who couldn’t come up with a solution like this. And your ‘burn-in’ etc comment in regards to my solution is equal to what auto-brightness does.
 
It will be interesting to see what Display Mate says about the iPhone X screen, especially when displaying different content. Notice the Apple specs say 625 nits “typical” which is plenty enough for sunlight judging by my experience with my iPhone 7. However, that wording “typical” makes me wonder if the iPhone X has some sort of ABL system in place...

For those of you that don’t know, OLED displays usually have an ABL (automatic brightness limiter) system in place which adjusts brightness based on the content shown. For example, if your looking at a picture of the moon where the majority of the screen is black (which in the case of OLED means the screen is off in those areas), the max brightness for the pixels showing bright objects (stars, moon) will ratchet up to peak nits. However, if your looking at a very bright screen, such as an all white screen, the ABL will kick in and limit all of the pixels to a dimmer brightness.

A perfect example of this is the new LG 2017 OLED TVs. Technically, these TVs can reach near 1000 nits but only with a very narrow window. I believe it’s only possible if 5% of the pixels are lit and the rest are black. With an all white screen, the ABL kicks in and limits the brightness to around 350-400nits. With most real world content, the average peak brightness will be around 700 nits.

So my question is: Is 625 nits the true peak brightness or is 625 nits the peak brightness for average real world use with the screen having a true peak brightness of 800 nits or higher when most of the screen is dark? Is Samsung doing something different with the OLED panels in their phones or are we getting the same tech behind the Galaxy Note 8 but Apple is measuring their max brightness based on real world use instead of best case scenario?

I guess we’ll find out soon. Either way, I’m glad to see Apple embrace OLED and having HDR support just makes it even better.

not at all concerned... I'm sitting this one out... give Apple another year to get all the kinks worked out of the OLED conversion and the TouchID > FaceID thing.

During use, the pixels will begin to lose brightness. This can cause the ‘burn in’ effect as the pixels that are lit up often will be less bright than those around them. However, during normal use all of the pixels will average out their brightness so it’ll probably be unnoticeable. The screen just won’t get as bright as new.
 
I think some are worrying and overthinking this too much.

I really doubt Apple would allow their new baby which is defining the iPhone going forward to be undone by such a simple thing.

I think it will be fine, even if the on paper specs don't pass the tech geek seal of approval.

It really depends if the 650 nits is the maximum it can achieve, if so its going to be hard to see in direct sunlight due to the emissive displays nature. This is not an LCD panel with a transflective sheet to reflect the sunlight so it needs to be brighter to achieve the same result.

Let’s try to stay focus and on topic. My friends have nothing to do with this conversation, and trying to be funny is lame.

People here are complaining that the screen on current iPhones is not bright enough in the sun and I am disagreeing with that because it clearly is. When the iPhone screen is at maximum brightness, even in direct sunlight everything is crystal clear on the screen, so bright and clear that the glare from the sun is barely noticeable and in some cases it’s not noticeable at all. Maybe you could try telling that to someone who doesn’t own an iPhone, but the fact is I have owned all and I take many pictures in direct sunlight all year round and the screen never disappoints, almost no glare and clear graphics on screen.

Then you have others saying they would like it to be brighter because they’re wearing sunglasses... They are disputing something else. They’re not saying the screen isn’t bright enough in direct sunlight, but the screen isn’t bright enough because they wear sunglasses. Just because you prefer the screen to be brighter due to other circumstances such as wearing sunglasses, doesn’t mean the screen currently is not bright enough.

Then you have ones that compare it to Samsung phones with much higher brightness levels. So because of that, they’re saying the iPhone screen should or need to be brighter.

Then you have ones who say Samsung will not give Apple their best displays because Apple is their direct competitor. This is just unfounded gibberish.

I have read carefully what they have complained about. There isn’t any issue with the iPhone screen brightness. The fact is, in direct sunlight when the iPhone screen is at max brightness you can see everything crystal clear, and to say it is insufficient simply isn’t true.

Sound like you want the screen bright enough to actually hurt your eyes. Then you’ll complain it gets too bright in direct sunlight and it hurt your eyes when you look at it, or you had to go buy sunglasses just to use the phone outside when there is sunlight.

Different screen that the iPhone 7 and 8 ips panel. The X will require more nits to be seen in the sun just because of how amoled works. My s7 edge is hard to see in the sun where my note 8 and iPhone 7 and easy to see. I do think the X will have issues in the sun..
