Hmmm, have 10.5.7, everything up to date, wonder what it is....???

I can't bluetooth tethering to work either. My MB can see my iPhone I enter the passcode and it shows on my iPhone but displays disconnected. Works fine on USB. Running 10.5.7....

so i followed 9to5mac's instructions and now I have tethering working (via bluetooth and usb) but my MMS is not working... fails to send messages..

i've tried the wap... and mobile... and idata... settings, and neither of them will let successfully send an MMS... always get the red exclamation mark :(

I then resent 'MMS' to 1010 and received a response to say that MMS will not be activated until June 17th and to contact O2 back then...

So i'm not sure if MMS is broken on my side or if it's just O2 stopping MMS for all iPhone users till 17th?

Anyone else having MMS problems today?

Thanks

Yep - I installed the ipcc file for O2, got tethering working, but then no MMS any more. Didn't matter what I did to the MMS settings, just wouldn't work.

However, after restoring my phone to the 3.0GM then MMS returned, although obviously tethering was once more disabled, so I would guess that there are settings within that old O2 ipcc file that although do enable tethering, are incompatible with the *current* implementation of MMS and tethering as O2 are setting up up post beta-testing.

What someone needs to do is create a new ipcc file which includes the working - current - MMS and data settings and also incorporates the method to activate tethering without destroying the MMS functionality. Of course you'll still need to use the beta iTunes 8.2 to install this custom ipcc file...

Can someone create one? :)

ive contacted the folk who made the original o2 ipcc file to see if they can create a new one.. will post back once they do it :)

Patched Carrier File

I've patched my carrier file with settings attached (see the image) and both tethering and MMS work for me. I'm unsure about billing implications at this point.

From my testing, tethering works perfectly with mobile.o2.co.uk but looks like you need the tethering bolt-on to use idata.o2.co.uk.

Unless all APNs are set to use idata.o2.co.uk, the iPhone will fail to tether and will remove the tethering option. This must be hard coded.

Therefore, the answer is to avoid the idata.o2.co.uk APN entirely.

how did you get the bluetoth tethering to work on your imac.

I tried on my mac pro, they both see each other, but the mac pro says not connected, and have a little red dot.

I got tethering with my MacPro working.
Then tried it yesterday with my MacBook and the tethering option vanished spontaneously.

Appreciate the screenshots..

I just applied them and restarted my iPhone...

So now I have MMS working again, but as soon as i paired my iPhone with my MacBook, tethering disappeared and was unable to connect (via bluetooth)

So how did you get tethering working using mobile.o2.co.uk? Doesn't work for me...

And what difference does idata.o2.co.uk make? i mean.. do you get any different services for using it?

bit confused... as I still can't get MMS AND tethering at the same time... it's either one or the other

tbh, i use MMS more than tether anyway

Account's are being migrated onto the idata.o2.co.uk APN slowly - eventually all iPhone contracts and PAYG will use the idata.o2.co.uk APN, so it will be impossible to avoid it entirely sooner or later. This also could be the solution to some of the issues people are having. If you have been migrated onto the new APN, you may have difficulties using/accessing some features on an APN you account is not subscribed to. Hope that helps.

hmmm. I have a PAYG iphone, but am using a different sim. Any idea if I will have to use the idata.o2.co.uk, or still be able to use the mobile.o2.co.uk..??

Eventually everyone (including PAYG) will be using the idata.o2.co.uk. It's not whether you use an iPhone that was purchased on PAYG, it's all about the sim card, and the provisioning of the sim. The only real way of knowing is to call CS. Hope that helps.

But is the idata.o2.co.uk just for iphone users. The sim I use now is a business one, not linked to an iphone. So wonder if the mobile.o2.co.uk wil stay for normal phone users.

To get tethering working I didn't actually manually type in the details shown in the screenshot. I edited my carrier file to apply the details for me.

All the carrier file does it let you edit the default carrier settings such as user names and APNs.

You can use the latest iTunes 8.2 to upload a new carrier file by making a small config change seen here: http://www.unlockit.co.nz/forum/index.php?topic=4.0

I've attached mine, simply remove ".zip" from the filename.

In response to tethering over idata.o2.co.uk, I could enable it but couldn't get any internet connectivity. I reckon this is controlled by O2 depending on whether I pay for the extra bolt-on.

Some people have reported manually having to add the following MMS settings under "Cellular Data Network" but it's one small step to get tethering working:

APN: wap.o2.co.uk
Username: o2wap
Password: password
MMSC: mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
MMS Proxy: 193.113.200.195:8080
MMS Max Message Size: 307200
MMS UA Prof URL: [Blank]

Hi Colin,

I tried your carrier file and my MMS option has disappeared entirely now!

I don't have the option to turn it on in Settings > Messages any more.

Tethering is still working ok for me though.

Any further thoughts on why MMS may have disappeared?

Thanks

Check your Cellular Data Network settings and ensure MMS is complete:

APN: wap.o2.co.uk
Username: o2wap
Password: password
MMSC: mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
MMS Proxy: 193.113.200.195:8080
MMS Max Message Size: 307200
MMS UA Prof URL: [Blank]

Ok, cheers.

Have done that and the MMS options have come back however when I try to send a picture message, just get an exclamation mark :(

To be honest, you mentioned at the start of the thread that you couldn't send MMS even with the idata.o2.co.uk APN you get with default network settings of the 3.0 GM.

To make sure you've got MMS enabled on your account I'd concentrate on getting it working with the default settings before you attempt tethering as well.

Tried resetting your network settings?
Settings —> General —> Reset —> Reset Network Settings

Did you ever text 'MMS' to 1010?

I am confused

Frankly I don't care at all about MMS. We have Twitter, we have email. We have a million other ways of sending images. Who needs MMS?

But occasional once-in-a-month tethering might be useful. And paying 14UKP for that is a little too rich for my tastes.

So I have successfully changed my ipcc file. Got tethering working and I was happy.

Once tethering is on - docking the iPhone automatically started USB (wired tethering) - which is not needed. So I turned the option off.

When I wanted to use tethering, via bluetooth, I turned it back on. And "boom". It vanished. Tethering didn't work and the option vanished from my iPhone.

Is there a way to turn tethering on, and leave it there?

C.

I lost my tethering as well under networks. But I think I was playing with the idata.o2.co.uk.

So I just did a full restore and then put back the v5 ipcc file and it came back for me. In fact got bluetooth tethering to work.

and.. please post back your results...

Okay - installed the new ipcc. ....

...and so-far so good.
Since the last OS update, the bluetooth in the Unibody MacBooks will work.
So I tethered my MacBook Pro to my iPhone using both WiFi and then 3G.

Everything worked, although oddly, the 3G seemed faster than WiFi.

Don't intend to use this a lot, but it will be great for emergencies.

An emergency being defined as:

Need to use Laptop or Laptop Apps
and
Have no Wifi
and
Have 3G signal.
and
Not overseas.

Which, to be honest, is a pretty unlikely set of circumstances.

just loaded your ipcc.. which basically is the same as what my settings were anyway..

mms works, although can't test tethering on my imac as the iphone fails to pair with it for some reason (over bluetooth).

tethering works fine on my unibody macbook :)

thanks for the ipcc... :D
