Just got this from o2:

If you don't have the iPhone Bolt On, or are not on a specific iPhone tariff, then you won't be able to get the full iPhone experience.

For example, you'll not be able to use Visual Voicemail or benefit from unlimited data & Wi-Fi and you also find that you cannot use some of the exciting new features contained within the iPhone 3.0 OS software release. Take a look at our tariffs for iPhone below for more information and find out how to change your tariff.

If you want to continue using your iPhone on a non-iPhone tariff you will need to make some simple changes to the settings on your iPhone after you download the new iPhone 3.0 OS software update.

Here's what you'll need to do:

1. From the main screen of your iPhone tap Settings > General > Network

2. Under Cellular Data Network
* Tap APN and enter mobile.o2.co.uk (Please note that o2 needs to be written with a letter o and not a zero)
* Tap Username and enter vertigo
* Tap Password and enter password
3. Ignore the Visual Voicemail APN box - it's not available without an iPhone tariff

4. Under MMS
* Tap APN and enter wap.o2.co.uk
* Tap Username and enter vertigo
* Tap Password and enter password
5. Turn your iPhone off and on again

6. Text MMS for to 1010 for free. We'll set up picture messaging and let you know when it's done.

So basically in my case I am not in a iphone tarrif, so I get to use the old settings, which mean my tethering will work and my mms will work with the v5.0 ipcc :)

Ah, right, no, I'm still running 2.2.1 (waiting until Wednesday!). So you get the v4 ipcc when you install 3.0? And it v5, therefore, an unofficial modified version of v4?

Yay, O2 just set up my MMS. :)

I put 3.0 on last night, and tried texting MMS to 1010 and just got the "We are not enabling MMS until the 17th etc etc...."

However, looks as if they might be starting to enable the accounts today.

:)

Bah, beat me to it - just had an MMS to say I am good to go on 3.0 as well (using 16GB PAYG 3G). Happy days !

Just gave it a test by sending myself a pic, and it seemed to work perfectly.

If they hadn't ruined the whole 3.0 update with their farcical tethering prices, I'd be well happy now.

Yep, just received a MMS from o2 - didn't have to do anything to get it. :)

Upgraded to 3.0 yesterday, texted "MMS" to 1010 but got the standard message back saying "Sending picture messages is not available until 17 June..."

Then, out of the blue got a text today from o2 saying "You can't send picture messages yet because picture messaging isn't set up for you. We'll set it up now and let you know when it's ready"

And a couple of minutes later I get a MMS saying that it's done.

Could be a good reason to upgrade to 3.0 before the official release, when all these phones suddenly upgrade to 3.0 on Wednesday o2 might have a backlog for enabling MMS on them

The (free) tethering hack.... is still working.... and the right price to boot.

I can guarantee if there was ever going to be somebody that would get caught out doing the likes, it would be me.

However, if you could point me in the right direction good sir I'll take a look......

me too, me too.

there are so many conflicting versions here I don't know which one actually works!

Just read back in the thread and

Precis version:
Download the ipcc file. ( post 39 above)
Rename it to o2_uk.ipcc
Quit iTunes
In Terminal, type: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
Dock your iPhone.
Use iTunes to install the ipcc file. Option-Click "restore" and select the ipcc file.
Restart your iPhone.
Turn on tethering.
Pair iPhone with Bluetooth.

It is almost as if Apple *wanted* folks to get around the extortionate tethering charges. Like they did with ringtones.

Thanks fella, will take a look tonight.

Thanks macwannabee for your response as well.

:)

Sorry, can you confirm - so this will allow tethering on a NON-Jailbroken 3G iPhone and will work with the v3.0 OS? Or did I misunderstand?

That's what the man says - going to try it tonight. some people are having problems getting MMS and tethering to work but I'm not too bothered about MMS - it will just be the wife sending me pictures of the kids!

Yes. Exactly. It uses the built-in tethering support in 3.0

Perhaps at some point O2 will find a way to block this. Or identify it as network abuse. But currently this method works.

I know this is straying away from the subject of the thread (slightly) but what is the performance like using a tethered iPhone as a "modem" ? Most of the places I visit that don't have wifi have no 3G coverage either - is performance a bit on the slow side ?

I have poor 3G coverage in my house. But tried it yesterday.
Put my iPhone by a window (to get a signal)
And on my MacBook, turned-off WiFi - and connected via bluetooth.
Mail collection seemed a bit slow - I had not synced for a while. So I may have downloaded some big attachments.

Web performance seemed very fast. BBC news pages appeared in less then a second. Faster than iPhone. Much more broadband speed than dial-up.

Thanks - seemed too good to be true. Don't think I'm going to get ANY work done today at this rate...

Arghhh! What am I doing wrong here?

Downloaded the file from post #39 in this thread - it gives me a folder called "Payload" containing a file called "O2_UK.bundle".

In Terminal, typed: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

Docked iPhone

Clicked Option-Restore

Browsed to the downloaded O2_UK.bundle file, but it's "greyed out".

I assume this is the IPCC file? Its icon is a white lego brick and it I can see the package contains all the carrier info. How the heck do I install it?

Thanks!
