So in the UK those of us who are on OS3.0 are starting to get SMS and the MMS messages from o2 confirming that MMS is enabled on our phones.

And it works.

My question is - do I now do the iccp file change thingy to get tethering working and risk loosing MMS functions?

If I do and then loose the settings will texting MMS to 1010 reset them so they both work in tandem?

Wow! It WORKED!

I "did the ipcc thing" and noticed that a lot of the MMS settings were blank. Luckily I'd copied them down from my working MMS 4.0 settings, so I put the missing settings back in and now I have:

OS 3.0
Working MMS (I know I can send, not tried receiving yet. Anyone want to send me one?)
O2 Tethering, even with Bluetooth!

After installing the ipcc, I had to go to my General->Network->Cellular Data Network Settings and add these settings under the MMS section:

MMSC: http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
MMS Proxy 193.113.200.195:8080
MMS Max Message Size: 307200
MMS UA Prof URL (leave blank)

Ah, never thought of that!

Well, it's definitely all working: MMS (send & receive) and tethering (BT & USB)

:D

We need to see if O2 charge you for your tethering now!

I suppose if the ipcc file gives you the correct tethering settings then you will fly under the Radar.

I can't help thinking that this is gonig to be a running battle with o2 changing stuff to prevent such "jiggery-pockeary"

Yup, that's my concern. I don't doubt that this does indeed work, however if O2 decide you have breached the terms of your contract and decide to bill you per MB that you have used, then it could suddenly become a costly disaster.

I reckon as long as you were sensible, and didn't abuse it beyond checking the odd mail or website then chances are you might be ok, but who knows. I think I will let you guys blaze the trail on this one.
:p

Ok, I now have the tethering up and running.

Before I actually do anything with it though, how much have people (Carniphage?) actually been using this? ie. What amount of bandwdth/MB have you used without it being questioned?

I "assume" that because you have never actualy asked your providor to enable tethering, that the hope is that they will not realise you are doing anything out of the ordinary?

Wouldn't use it much I don't think, but being able to check my mails on my netbook etc once in a while would be great.

Ok, so connecting my iPhone to my Vista desktop PC seems to kickstart tethering exactly as expected. The phone displays the blue tethering bar and it's all hunky-dory.

I have now tried connecting the phone to my netbook, which is running XP, but nothing happens. The phone is recognised as being plugged into the USB port fine, but nothing to do with tethering happens?

I don't have, nor really want itunes on my netbook. Is the lack of it liable to be anything to do with why the tethering isn't working?

To my knowledge, the machine you tether to has to be running iTunes otherwise the phone isn't recognised as a modem.

you don't need iTunes to be installed

That's me stumped then....

Have tried restarting the phone, the netbook, switching tethering off and on whilst plugged into the USB, but nothing seems to help.

The netbook is fully up to date with XP SP3. Anybody got any thoughts on what the issue might be?

I'll rephrase my question :

Anybody got any useful thoughts on what the issue might be?

If you have Bluetooth on the netbook - I would recommend trying that first.

I have used USB (wired) tethering with a Macbook - but I don't understand how that works in terms of how the phone is presenting the network connection to the USB.

Acccording to Apple. It is iTunes that installs the required software.

Thanks for that Carniphage.

I did wonder if iTunes was required to be on the machine you wanted to tether, but thought it seemed unlikely. I hadn't really wanted to put it on the netbook, but looks like it may be a neccesity.

I'll try it out tonight when I get home and report back.

:)

You're partly correct. iTunes itself doesn't have to be installed but the MobileDevice driver that handles how iPods and iPhones are recognised and used is a requirement.

To my knowledge, you can only install the MobileDevice driver via installing iTunes.

I read somewhere that O2 will monitor how much MB is downloaded and decide if a threshold has been reached and then they will send out a warning to advise of such and if continues, you will then be charged per MB.

Ok, installed iTunes on my netbook, and the iPhone was then instantly recognised as a USB modem and tethering worked flawlessly. Just plugged it in and away it went quite happily :)

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated. Does seem a bit poor though that you have to have iTunes installed to do this, but hey ho.
