I wanted the fun of assembling my phone out of raw components but some bloody Chinese person did all the work.
Bastards!

What you could do is wipe the phone, take the sim out, put a really cheap screen protector on it and box it all up. Then take it out of the box and set it all up again yourself.

Or, you know, just use the damn phone.

Remarkable to me what generates strong emotional reactions in folks.

Must be nice to have nothing else more important n one's life to cause upset.

Must be nicer to be unaware of what is trivial and what, in a world of important events, is truly important.

iPhone not only revolutionized the cell phone / mobile gadget industry, it did that to human emotions as well.

I did not mind them taking it out of the box and quickly setting it up, I did not like it when she tossed it down on the counter to type something into her iPad.

The people at ATT are required to do the initial set up. It is their job.

I'll explain.

I went to Virgin one day to buy my iPhone 5. I was excited coming from the 4 and for the new purchase of a phone. Went early in the morning, was the first one there, told the girl what I wanted, she grabbed the box and started setting it up in the system. It was an exiting time. Well it was until......

She opened the box and then put in the sim card, took off the plastic tape and turned on the phone.

Say what???

All the excitement of my new purchase was taken away. But hey I had the iPhone 5. I should of been happy.

Just wondering if anyone else had this horrible experience. And when I get the iPhone 5s in a couple of days, I will literally make a point of telling them to not do this. Yes I am very particular.

One of the few but I agree ! I love to break open the wrapper myself and power it up for the first time. Would it totally ruin my experience, probably not but I would be very disappointed. A big part of the experience !

Just tell them you want to open it. You can even open it right there in the store, make sure it's not damaged, make sure it powers on correctly. They will let you do it. I once had an Apple employee ask me if I wanted to do it. It was funny. I told him to have at it. I opened up the original. The rest of the ones I have opened since have been great fun, but they really don't top June of 2007. ;)

Try this on for size:Back when the iPhone 3G had just come out, I did the whole wait in line the night before on launch day at an AT&T store to be among the first to get it. I succeeded, and the AT&T rep did the same thing: removed the plastic wrap from the box, took out the phone and started to activate...

Okay, so I'm not going to get to unbox my own iPhone... I was okay with that... when the phone slips out of the AT&T guy's klutzy fingers and slams onto the counter on a corner, and then he fumbles to try and catch it and it slides ACROSS the counter on its backside.

Then he finally picks it up, and resumes activating it like nothing happened.

Yeah, I wasn't happy. I annoyed the hell out of people behind me in line, but I raised a stink and got a manager involved. I was taking a new iPhone with me, but NOT that one.

I was also the LAST time I ever bought a phone in-store. From then on, I've always ordered online through Apple directly.

Yes, yes, people are starving in third world countries, and people are dying in the Middle East, and wars are being fought and pestilence and disease are causing great suffering in the world. We get it. We also get that fretting over such comparably trivial things appears shallow.

So, show us up. Why are you posting here when you should be flying to an impoverished nation to help the gates foundation dig holes to provide toilets? Why are you using whatever device you're using to read and post here, when you should really sell it so that you can fund someone's much-needed microloan?

Quite being so shallow! You're not doing enough!

From the thread title I was thinking the store person had taken the iPhone out of the box, put it on the floor and, well, stomped on it. Which would be going a bit far :)

This...BIG time. It's an apple forum. If you don't like a post, ignore it.

I feel your pain. It's like getting a package and opening it, the whole experience is ruined if you received the item without a box to open it. Apple actually designed the iphone boxes to open a certain way to get that special experience, the way it takes a second or two before you see the iphone ready for you. I too learned the same way when the iphone 5 was released, on release day the verizon guy took it out the box(normal procedure :-\) and I was not happy. That experience of receiving a new phone, my new toy was taken away by a verizon guy who doesn't think to ask do I want to open my new iphone. This year I had to get my wife to get the new iphone 5s for me because I worked day shift that day and I explicitly told her to not let the verizon rep open the box by any means and the rep didn't open it as per my request. And it was a great experience for me.

AND TO YOU HATERS,

ON XMAS DAY LET SOMEONE ELSE OPEN YOUR PRESENT RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU THEN LET THEM MESS WITH IT FOR A FEW MINUTES, TAKE IT OUT THE PACKAGING, THEN HAND IT TO YOU AFTER THEY ARE DONE PLAYING WITH IT.

Experience ruined, it's just not the same.

I'm fairly certain this was the procedure both when I got my 3G and my 4S, and I didn't give it a second thought. As long as it's handled with basic care, of course!

By contrast, when I got my ipad I didn't open the box till I got home, only to discover a massively uneven backlight that made one half of the screen green and the other half pink. I was more than happy to have them pull open the next box and turn it on in store to make sure I had a decent replacement! So believe me, the "home unboxing" experience isn't always unicorns and rainbows!

In the interest of sharing, though:
I bought my first new car last year. I'd made the mistake of reading a thread on another forum of people bragging how few miles were on their car at delivery. 20.. 8... 5... As well as talk of engine "break-in" periods and how you were supposed to drive a certain way for the first while. Then I took delivery on mine... 350km, driven by god knows who during test drives and a 200km dealership transfer.

So yes, these are ultimately silly petty things "as long as it works", but at the same time, I think its understandable to attach some emotional weight to these little rituals, or else life would be quite dull.

Good luck with a better 5S experience!

I see what you're saying OP though it's not as important to me.

The customer opening the package was important to Steve Jobs as well.

Yeah, no foreplay for you! :D

I wonder if DROID people do this or is just we deserve to be called fanboys.

consider this unboxing fiasco, as preparation for real world problems ... trust me ... it gets worse

Lol guess I ruin people's experiences 5 days a week.

It's required of me to open the box and set up the phone. Unless the customer says otherwise. So you shoulda said something. I like it actually, it's less I have to do. It's what they do at most carrier stores and at best buy we set up evvvvvvrything. It's really helpful for folks who haven't ever had a smartphone or have never had an iphone.

Again if you didn't like it, you should have said something. It's your bad, not the associates

Edit: I work at best buy, I can assure you I don't give crappy customer service. Yes we try and sell you stuff you don't need. But cut us some slack, WE HAVE TO! We can get in trouble if we don't offer it, so bite your tongue for a sec and listen to the pitch. If you don't want it say no. And by the way, people typically need the stuff I sell, I like a car charger, like a case (70% of my customers are clumsy lol) and stuff that protects the $700+ device they just activated.

Yah its all good. I was using an example. So I can tell them I want to do it? Also for the salesman comment it depends if I am in the mood, this is just me, I know its your job :p There are probably many customers that enjoy that.

Ok guys, I thought I would clear something up. Yes it bugged me for the first couple of minutes but I was over exaggerating a little bit for humour geez lol. I would still rather open it myself and I will tell them next time.

Good attitude. A simple "hold up, there salesperson... I'd like to open it." should do the trick. :)

Yah that is what I am saying. I like the experience of unboxing my own device. Not too much to ask right?

No it's not too much to ask. I respect your preferences.

If more people in this forum were as honest & outspoken as you, it would be a better place.

Mutual respect is important. Unfortunately the culture of Apple tends to breed selfish narcissists like the old CEO.

How about the sales lady tries on your new sneakers and runs around in them for a little before you buy them. Thats how it is lol

it isn't like anyone jumped on safari and browsed a couple pages or made a few phone calls or added their email accounts to your phone. it's more akin to someone taking your sneakers out of the box and putting on the laces. as someone else mentioned, that's customer service.

regardless of if it's a 'first world problem' or not, it's the OPs 800$, he should have had the option to open it himself if that's what he wanted.

& LOL at some of these replies, you guys are taking a minor complaint the OP made and letting it wreck your world lmao

I have opened my own iPhones at purchase using a credit card to cut around the bottom leaving the plastic intact on top. Although that is something I like and I am fairly picky, I would never say the experience was ruined or stomped on.

On launch day of the iPhone 4, the sales person ripped the plastic off the box, but not the screen or back plastics. I was annoyed, but it didn't ruin my experience.

On the other hand, if they dropped it or threw it aside as you have stated, I would have FLIPPED out on them.
