How do I know someone else hasn't already done that? It's entirely possible someone did exactly that, shoe was the wrong size or they simply didn't like it, and back on the shelf they went.

PS I hope you never buy a new car. You'll never sleep again.

----------

In my experience they do the same at the apple store (open the phone that is) unless asked to do otherwise.

You guys are being completely ridiculous now. Bad example I made about the shoes. And the car comment. My partner's parents made sure there were no km's on the new car they purchased. They specifically asked for one that didn't have any...yes..some people do that, it is their preference!!!! Deal with it.

Well, with a 'brand new' car, you know several people have already driven it, right? In car factories someone drives the car from the end of the production line to the quality control area. Often the car is 'driven' for a short distance on rollers to ensure there are no fluid leaks or diagnostic messages. Someone drives it from there to the departure area. Someone else loads it onto the transporter. Someone else drives it from the transporter into the dealer's prep area. It doesn't come in a shrink wrapped box having never been touched by human hand since it left the end of the assembly area.

It's almost equivalent to you buying a brand new car and someone at the dealership decided to take it for a joyride and 'set it up for you'.

Edit: haha seems like great minds think alike

I got my new 5S and new contract a week ago now, the person in the 3 store didn't open my iPhone but I sure would of been pissed if they did. It's my phone, I want to open it.. Would you happily buy a laptop and let the person in the shop open it and "set it up" for you? I sure as hell wouldn't.

Exactly! I think some people on here don't really care either way. That's great for them I guess. I am particular about my belongings. Nice to know someone feels the same.

never seen this happen in an Apple store--not for new purchases nor for AppleCare replacements.

I don't know if it would bother me enough to create a thread about it or say something snarky to the sales associate but not removing my own shrink-wrap would kind of grate on my nerves...especially if someone dropped the device!

In any case, the fact that an Apple Genius won't do this gives credence to the claim that unwrapping one's own device is recognized by official Apple employees as part of the "experience"

My iPhone 5 was almost opened by an Apple employee when I got it. I literally had to tell him to stop. He had already punctured the plastic. Not a big deal, but it's my phone and I'll unbox it whenever I damn well please.
One time I was at Mdconalds grabbing a burger and some fries, and to my surprise someone had already raised and slaughtered the cattle, processed the meat, packed it, shipped it, froze it, then cooked it and put it on a bun for me! And that wasn't even the worst part... Worst part was learning I wasn't going to get to pick the potatoes myself.

Never going back to this establishment because of this. Ruined my burger experience.
Bad comparison. I pay McDonald's to do the steps you described. I don't pay Apple or whatever store to unbox my phone.

I agree that while there are much more important 'problems' out there, this bugs the heck out of me. It's especially bad when you buy a phone from a carrier. They open the box, rip off the plastic screen covers, throw them away, put their greasy paws all over your phone (do they dip them in fry grease beforehand?!), and start setting it up, ask you to input a password, then take it back from your hands, grease it up some more...then ask you if you want them to put the screen protector you just bought on there too. No thanks!

How about the sales lady tries on your new sneakers and runs around in them for a little before you buy them. Thats how it is lol

Wait til you grow up and get to buy a car.

Drop $50,000 and it comes to you with already 5-100 miles on the odometer.

At least they safety checked it first :)

I am in agreement with the OP. He even explained that he may have over exaggerated, but you still feel it. I got my phone at best buy and the guy just ripped the plastic off and played with it too. I was like... uhhh I really kinda wanted to do that myself and have the enjoyment of opening my new purchase!

I will say tho, I didn't let it affect me very much because they had given me a 64GB for the price of a 16GB. So needless to say, I was very, very thrilled about that! So i just let it go.. But I will definitely be asking them to not do it next time :)

64 for 16 price?!? I would have let them play w it for a few minutes no problem.

I'll explain.

I went to Virgin one day to buy my iPhone 5. I was excited coming from the 4 and for the new purchase of a phone. Went early in the morning, was the first one there, told the girl what I wanted, she grabbed the box and started setting it up in the system. It was an exiting time. Well it was until......

She opened the box and then put in the sim card, took off the plastic tape and turned on the phone.

Say what???

All the excitement of my new purchase was taken away. But hey I had the iPhone 5. I should of been happy.

Just wondering if anyone else had this horrible experience. And when I get the iPhone 5s in a couple of days, I will literally make a point of telling them to not do this. Yes I am very particular.

I haven't (I buy from Apple), but I'd be annoyed at that!

Prolly because she was trying to assist, and ensure everything was working for you with your new phone. This is called "customer service."

I agree with this. When I purchased Samsung Galaxy S 4 at Best Buy Mobile, they guy opened the box, and have inspected the device, he put in the new sim card (since I was upgrading from an iPhone 4S). They then proceeded to set up my phone, install the screen protector and the case. This was to ensure that I had a working phone before I walk out of the Best Buy Mobile store, and that way I don't have to make another trip if I had problems with it.

Personally I like how they do this because it saves me time and I can just walk out of the store with a working phone ready to text, call, browse, etc.

But I do miss unboxing it at home.

We purchased our iPhones in an Apple store. The employee handed my girlfriend the box when it came time to set hers up. My girlfriend opened the box, the phone fell out, hit the ground and skidded across the floor. Maybe not everyone should open their own box! :)

There are many retailers that not only offer to do that, but charge you for the service! Like I said in an earlier comment, we're all more tech happy than average consumers or else we wouldn't be here. For many people, everything that occurs between purchasing a device and using it (that is, unboxing and set-up) is a chore, not part of the fun.

I guess that's true, most of us here would have it in common to want to open our own things. Hell I felt a bit bummed out when I got a refurb AirPort Express that didn't feel like a real unboxing. :p

I am the one being ridiculous here... You got me!

They key is they specifically asked for this. That is the difference, which I pointed out early. You wanted them not to open it. You should have asked. I assume this isn't your first phone purchase. If it was, then now you know.

They've always opened my box at the apple store unless it's an off contract purchase. So fat I've made purchases in Los Angeles, Des Moines, and Salem. Not saying the have to. But it's pretty standard procedure, in my experience.

The one and only time I purchased an iPhone not from apple store directly was this last time, with the 5s, because somehow the local Apple store got zero att units launch day.

I'm not saying he's wrong to want what he wants. I'm saying he should have said something.

Then again, the OP is talking about their purchase that occurred "one day" of the iPhone 5... so perhaps he's still jilted by something that occurred a year ago?

It's for this reason that people order online so they can activate at home.

I picked up two 5s's at the Apple store. The person got them from the back, scanned the barcodes w/ their iPod thingy and my CC, had me sign a couple of times and put them in a bag and said "all set!" I went home and unboxed and activated both.

If you order a car from the dealer you can always ask them to do/not do specific things during the post delivery inspection:

For example, not removing plastic unless absolutely necessary (it usually isn't), and not putting the front plate holder on the car. (You might have to sign a waiver saying you'll put it on anyway).

Things like that - yeah lots of cars come with plastic on them. lol when we were car shopping, one of the dealers I visited took us to their new car reserve lot - they had cars with the shipping plastic still on the wheels and plastic covering on the seats & steering wheel and stuff.

It was awesome.

When we ordered our last car they offered to send someone to pick it up from the train station a week before the car carrier would bring it to the dealer. On one hand, that meant it got 50 miles put on it that wouldn't have been otherwise.. on the other we got it a week early.

Decisions, decisions.

I feel for the OP. Unboxing the phone is a personal and private affair. I would have slapped the sales lady!

I like to save my boxes and keep the shrinkwrap (I use the SIM tray clip to cut the shrinkwrap -- and cut along the edges of the box).

I could care less about the unboxing but I definitely understand how someone would like to do it themselves. But don't take my m fin screen protector off until I have another one to put on it. For me, I have a ritual about putting one on as soon as I take the factory one off. I then let it sit untouched for 24 hours to ensure a long life out of it. Am I OCD? You betcha, I paid for the device and choose to use it the way that makes me happy...

Apple did that one time on a replacement phone...

Everyone's getting their knickers in a wad about the friggin' store employee. That's not what this is about. I don't think anyone is suggesting the offending employee be lynched for doing her job.

This is about one man's tale of new-purchase-OCD, which I happen to share. Frankly, I'm surprised at the amount of flak this guy is getting on these forums. I thought we specifically buy overpriced luxury items for the experience that they provide. Unboxing the device and applying the first greasy fingerprint to that gorgeously flawless display is part of that experience.

We buy iPhones because we are particular about our hardware; if you guys think OP is being so ridiculous, why don't you just use an Android phone that some store employee has spiked to you from across the room? That's a much more rugged and proletarian experience.

I really hope that you understand how incredibly fortunate you are to have a life that gives you the luxury to even contemplate complaining about this.

Ugh, all of you people, you remind me of all the people who complain about starving children and Africa and blah blah blah and first world problems, I mean, just shut up already!

If you really care about what you say i.e. starving children, africa, first world problems, then go and help or go live in that country!

I'll explain.

LOL that's wat I'm sayin!!! I didn't say a word or think twice about it!! But ya, biggest hookup ever!

I was there for over an hour an a half too, and didn't even flinch! :)
