I am done with big phones, so I got the 8 and gave my 7plus to mom. Very liberating.
I downsized to the iPhone 7 last year from the 6S plus and had the same feeling. At the end of the day, it’s a phone and I want it to comfortably fit in my hand and in my pocket. I found I didn’t miss the screen of the plus a bit. It may be bigger, but it’s nowhere near what my iPad offers. I wasn’t planning to upgrade this year but my fiancée needed to replace her dying iPhone 6. She doesn’t care about technology so she took my 7 and let me have the upgrade. Didn’t even think about the plus this year and decided I didn’t want to deal with the craziness around the X launch. So, I bought the 8 and love it. Subtle but welcome improvements all around!

Put it this way, there will be some abomination problem with the X that they will fix next year, and even if there isn't, they will add some incremental features like a ProMotion display or whatever else that will be the 'must have' feature, instantly making the X a $1500 paperweight in the eyes of those who must have the best.

I'll stick with my 8, it's beautiful.

Haha, whatever makes ya sleep at night. I guess that would make your 8 a paperweight compared to the X currently. Just give it up already. There is nothing wrong with going with the 8. Just as there is nothing wrong with going with the X. This site is ridiculous.

Spend a $1000 plus just to say wow? Ok. 6 months from now there will be a new “wow” phone. Keep paying your $40 a month for the foreseeable future. That’s the “wow” part for me.

Like it. The 8 has been out a couple of weeks and it’s called the “older model”.

No. 6 months from now there will be no new iPhone. This iPhone is going to bring a brand new experience to iOS devices and that will last the current generation several years from now. Just like what happened when jumping to the iPhone 4 generation of iPhones to the iPhone 6 generation, it brought a new experience to the iPhone ecosystem but that generation is now over with the X.

The iPhone generations are:

iPhone 1
iPhone 4
iPhone 6
iPhone X

The iPhone 8 belongs to an older generation. It works just fine but it doesn't have the features of the new generation, what's the problem with that? When you bought the 8 you knew that and you were fine with it, what's the problem of people wanting to have the new experiences the new generation is to bring?

I'll pay the X up front but then again, what's the problem with people paying 40 a month to try new experiences?

Absolutely nothing. Buy what you want. People on this site try to put others down to feel better about their buying decisions. The 8 is a great phone, so is the X.

Honestly? Couldn't care less that the design looks 'old'. It's tried and tested, and has TouchID. FaceID is too new for me, I'll wait for others to be the guinea pigs.

To each its own. I do care about design and that's the reason I'll be getting the X. Everyone has their own preferences and there is nothing wrong with that.

Exactly. I just don’t think it’s right to call the 8 old because of its design. It’s not all about how it looks.

Yeah but as I said, in terms of perfomance is new, but the design is from several years ago. Let's just say it's not the 'newest'.

Quick question: aside from the animated poop emojis, what new features does the X offer that aren’t available on the 8 and 8 plus? By your own definition of iPhone generations, iterative improvements like better screens and better cameras don’t count. And I don’t really consider Face ID to be a new feature, since it just replaces Touch ID as the biometric sensor on the device. Same with the new home screen gesture. It’s not a new feature, just a different way of returning to the home screen. There’s not much in the X that changes how I use my phone or what I use it for. Sure it has a better screen and camera, but not $300 better than the 8 (and maybe not even the 7). The experience of using an iPhone is about the same on an X as it is on the 8, which is the main reason why I decided not to wait on the X this year.

I'm opting for the 8 Plus coming from the 6S Plus, I was going to hold out for the X but like the size and feel of the plus model, however an even bigger thing for me is the unknown of FaceId, which I'm sure will be very cool but is it really needed over the fingerprint sensor? It's lightning fast and as it is and as I saw one person say about FaceId "it seems like Apple wants to make accessing it beyond convenient". I'll let it come out and permeate for the next year and see how it goes, although I'm sure I'll have some envy.

By new features that impact the user experience I specifically mean the screen and front 3d camera.

For the screen, being a different size, rounded that spans the entire device surface with barely any borders and no physical buttons will make the content feel much different than a traditional phone screen. The rounded corners and bezel less body will make it feel more "organic" to the hand. Add to that the swipe gestures that replace the home button and the experience of using an iPhone X will be very different from anything we have seen from previous iPhones.

As for the front cameras, most people only take into consideration FaceId that per sè will add to the new experience, but we also need to consider the third party apps that will eventually pop up taking advantage of the new technoly in exciting ways.

Those two are the core features I consider to mark this new generation.

I'm loving 8+. Love the fact that Apple provided us with multiple options and excited about where the future of iPhone is headed. Buy what you like folks. Be happy we have choices, be happy with your choice and be done with it.

New experiences? The X is OLED like a bunch of phones already are, and it doesn’t have a bezel. Wow. How does this define the “future” of Apple products? Too many people are hanging onto the idea Apple is revolutionary. It’s not. Besides it’s a PHONE! You make it sound like Apple introduced the Holy Grail. Gezzzz.

I cannot find a reason for you to hype the X as you are. Do you work for Apple? It’s a phone!!! An oled phone like so many others. A bezeless oled phone....

The 8 is a great phone. Wireless charging mine as we speak. Despite the fact that other phones have been wireless charging long enough that the feature is offered in some cars (and usually car makers are way behind) and the only way I can tell the difference between my wife’s 7 and my 8 is by our cases. Still a nice phone.

It's perfectly fine that you're enjoying your iPhone 8, But you're overly exaggerating for stating that the iPhone X will be some "Abomination problem", for whatever reason you want to assume that. But there's no evidence of what you're saying regardless.

I have to agree with the original post. Bezel-less and no home button will definitely be different than what we are used to. He's not saying "experience" like some out of body thing haha, just going to be different than what iPhone users have been used to. Also, even though other phones have had similar features, it has never been on an iPhone. There are many users who stick to iOS so it is new for them.

I was actually thinking of holding out for the X or even waiting another year, but I ordered an 8 this week because my mother-in-law’s phone died and will inherit my 6s (personal). The experience would have been interesting having both a X and a 6s (work phone) simultaneously.

I have a 6s and haven't decided what to do yet.
I'm not going to buy X, it is really too expensive in my country and I'm not sure I can get used to the notch and I'm not fond of the screen ratio, it is too tall.
I'm tempted by the 8+ but it is pricey too and I'm not sure the size will be ok to me. I may buy it via a carrier with the 12 months upgrade option (pretty much like the iPhone upgrade program) and see what comes out next year, maybe a cheaper version of X or an S version of 8. I may even skip the 8 and upgrade to a new phone in 2018 after 3 years.

It looks like Apple "might" put TouchID in the new iPhone X successor if people complain how bad FaceID is and don't like it. I keep thinking about all the surgeons, doctors, and girls covered up by long hair waking up in the middle of the night having problems with FaceID that would make much more sense with TouchID. Who knows, maybe they might get rid of the notch for all we know?
What about all people with gloves (numerous jobs!) that can't use touchID?
That's why we have a choice when we go into an Apple Store.

I don’t like the low ppi, lack of brightness in the display, fat bezels, outdated radios, notch, small display etc of the X. I’m going to buy one to try out but if there are any issues I’m returning it to Apple. There’s not a lot to be excited about in this phone.

I’m still struggling to decide... I really don’t like the notch but I really didn’t want another iPhone 6 style phone.

I’m still using the 6 and was adamant I’d upgrade this year but the X isn’t very enticing. I can’t justify paying that for something I’m really not sure of. I’d wait another year but I’m worried that the notch is here to stay and I just really need a new phone.

So I may get the 8 and stay around for another year and if Apple doesn’t disappoint next year get whatever is out then. But ahh I can’t decide. Basically I think the 10 is ugly, the 8 isn’t really future proof (I’ve had the 6 for 3 years, can’t imagine another 2/3 with the 8) and so many android phones are grabbing my attention.... But tbh I’ll probs end up getting the 8 and sticking with it for 2years saying the exact same stuff I’m saying now about whatever may be released in the future.
