I'm on my 3rd 3Gs (16) in 3 days - - the 1st one had the same wifi signal strength changes (I had it for 2 months), and only when I stopped in an Apple store this weekend did I see a full 3 bar strength indicated . . . explained my situation and was told it was probably the hardware . . . swapped it out, and couldn't even get 3 bars on the new 3Gs in the Apple store (was told not to worry, as long as it didn't drop to 1 bar) . . . got it home, same problems (dropping to 1 bar even only 2 feet from my Netgear router) . . . swapped again today (although both phone no. 2 and no. 3 worked at full strength in a different Apple store), got it home and same problems - - starts at 3 bars drops almost immediately if I check email or do anything else to 2 and then 1 (and then stays at 1 bar), even only 8 feet from the router . . . did all the Applecare suggestions too, including rebooting, reinstalling, etc., with the same problems between phones 2 and 3 . . . I lot of time and hassle, with Apple reps. saying "they've not seen this problem" and "it must be my router?!"

I've done all of the resets, etc., on the phone itself (none of which have worked). I'm going to go back through and review the other suggestions - - I think, realistically, the only other option is to see if I can change the channel the router's broadcasting on - - - but there's no problem with my laptop or desktop computers (both running on wifi). Not real confident that there's a realistic fix, although I'd like to know why the 2nd and 3rd iPhones ran at "full bars" the entire time I was in the store (e.g., what routers Apple is using, settings, etc.) . . . makes me a bit cautious too on picking up the wifi only IPad (I've got one reserved).

From what I've been reading the iPhone may need a certain setup (like "no changing" b/g/n router....I forget the word actually used for no changing...Mad Cow), so the Apple Store may be set properly. Also, today at lunch where there are two wifi hotspots, I was able to get a signal the whole time. So, I'm thinking it's something to do with my router. I'm also on Channel 6, which everyone else is on in the neighborhood, so that may be affecting me also (I think 6 is the default).

Edit: So, I changed my channel to 8 and set my router to always be on G. It's working like it used to now. However, I wish there was a way to keep it from going to 3G, when it goes to sleep. I realize it's a power savings feature, but I'd like to have the choice.

I have a Linksys WRT110 that always gave my 3G 100% signal. When I got the 3GS two months ago, it always gave me 100% for a few seconds, then dropped down to 75%-50%. I got it swapped twice due to wifi issues.

Last night, I was bored and decided to update the firmware on the router. Immediately after, I noticed the wifi signal on the 3GS jumped up to and stayed at 100%. So awesome :)

aggie- now that you're jailbroken, look into Insomnia. That should help you out and doesn't allow it to drop to 3G

Thanks. I was wondering if there was something that would do that.

BTW, I tried updating the firmware, but I get some message that I need to go thru Verizon. Whatever.

No prob, I use it (Insomnia) all the time. There's a nice toggle for it through SBSettings also, and it makes switching so flipping easy.

What kind of router do you have that would require Verizon's input to update? That sounds odd.. I just had to download some .bin file, go through my router's setup page and update that way. Couldn't have been easier (well, if it was just a flash drive update, that would have been nicer ;))

I just added the toggle for SBSettings. However, I don't see the toggle on the main page (just under "more"). Is that how it works?

Also, I read that some had problems with insomnia ruining battery life (even when removed). Is that true?

My battery has always been the same, especially since :apple: says to switch to wifi if available as 3G uses more battery life. I'd say the difference is minimal, if any.

There should be an actual toggle on the main sbsettings screen. See if it's enabled in the More>Set Toggles section. Then you may need to reboot the phone for it to show. I always just turn off/on the phone as opposed to a respring, but it may work just fine after the respring.

I believe the router is Versalink. I clicked on check for update, but it said none available and there was a message before I even clicked that to check with Verizon. I've had this router for at least 2 years, so I would've thought there'd be an update, but maybe not.

Lol, maybe they just discontinued support for it and want you to get a new one then:)

I'm looking forward to starting all over and upgrading once we find a house. I'd like a little more range than what this router is able to give me.

That, and I'd like to be able to dump my Dell desktop and finally get a MBP:D

Thanks for the suggestions . . . I'll look to update the router and see if that helps . . . will report back once I get help from a friend updating the router (if there are any). Thanks again!

Good luck! I always thought it was funny how my 3G had full strength and the 3GS had half. Apple's support page says something about me having to "make sure the router is updated to the latest firmware" and I thought "eff that, it worked fine on the 3G!"

Touche Apple, you put me in my place :) I was getting 13.5 Mbps last night, just ran it again now and I'm getting a solid 14. I was getting scared thinking I'd want to upgrade to an HD (or whatever they're calling it) when it comes out, but now that my wifi is awesome again, I have no rush to get the new iPhone:D (well, at least until it's jailbreakable)

That's pretty funny on the new iPhone . . . I read something on that yesterday - - maybe by this summer/early fall? Curious too how the iPad will work (since they're not having to cram so much hardware into such a small space, at least by comparison)?

No firmware upgrades available for the Netgear . . . also, I've switched my wife's 3G wifi off (since she never uses the iPhone to browse, etc., anyway) and that seems to have increased my wifi signal to a steadier 2 bars . . . I'll also double check the channel settings and see if that makes a difference.

Dang, that sucks. You may want to just restore the router. I know it's a pain, but well worth it if you're able to go from 2 bars to 4. I always thought it would have been the iPhone's fault, but it turns out it wasn't. Idk how exactly a router can get "bogged down" like a computer or other device, but apparently it's possible.

wifi sucks

Ive been getting the same problem with my wifi on my phone. Everything was working fine until Sunday. Before my phone would connect automatically to my WEP protected wifi and at local hotspots, but all my phone does now is show that there are wireless connections available. When I select one of them to connect to it'll let me select it, but will disconnect as soon as I open another app or my mailbox. This is getting so frustrating. I've reset the network settings on the phone numerous times and I've reset my router, nothing has helped!!! Strangely the connection will work randomly with the WEP protected Wifi.

Is there anything else I can do?
