Have we determined if it's a hardware or software issue?
It is the 3.0 software causing the problem.

If we have to change our security to WEP instead of WPA2 to get WiFi working correclty, then we might as well not use any security. WEP is a joke as far as security is concerned.

Well I got sick of my phone and wifi issues. I went to apple today and they said they have never heard of this issue with 3gs. They did notice a low signal on my phone. They did and exchange and so far I am able to stay on wifi and signal is good. IDK will see. Only been a few hours.

3gs problems solved!!!

So I stated in a thread before that my wifi worked gr8 @ work, but when @ home it didn't even load YouTube vids... After alot of attemps reconfiguring my router, updating firmware ect, even swapping it with an older one 1 had nothing seemed to work. I spoke to an I.T. guy @ my job and he suggested my router(s) might be outdated. Took a shot on eBay and bought a refurbished netgear ($30), just hooked it up and BOOM, here I am typing away on my speedy wifi. Replacing my "older" router solved my prob, hopefully if your on the same boat this will help.....

Fix for wifi dropout

I was having the same problem with wifi dropout on the touch and the iPhone 3 gs. When you go to settings and check the network address of the iPod, it seems to have the wrong address. If you use static ip address and put in the correct address, it will work. My iPod and phone had the wrong gateway address 192.169.1.1 instead of 192.168.1.1. I don't know why it was doing this. Perhaps it is a router issue. Putting in the addresses manually as a static address rather than by DHCP seems to fix it.

On the 3GS, my issue isn't with the wifi dropping out or anything, and it usually stays on full bars. The problem is, it doesn't reach it's full potential. Maxing out at around 1-3mb on a 10mb connection. With the original 3G, I would consistently hit around 7-10mb each time on speedtest.

What do u use for the speed test??

I have a 3G Iphone and just got a 3GS. Both phones have software 3.0 on them. 3G works fine on my wifi network at home on my linksys router. The 3GS connects and works, but it is so slow you can't even watch a youtube video without it timing out.

I use the speedtest.net app to test. See below. Pic on left is 3G working fine, pic on the right is new 3GS on same network sitting side by side with the 3G. Have reset phone, reset router, etc.. No luck.

I don't think the Speedtest app is very accurate for the iPhone. I have 10meg Internet, which I get consistently on my computer. But with my iPhone right next to my wireless router set to 802.11g I only get 3meg download speeds most of the time.

WiFi "g" is supposed to be faster than my Internet speed, yet I can't even get my 10meg Internet speed with the iPhone right next to my router?

Problems with wifi on my 3GS

I have been ALL day with :apple: Apple regarding this issue ---

I have done everything you can do in regards to my router a linksys wrt150N and my new White 32G Iphone 3GS...reprogrammed the router, new security password, and reset the Iphone 3x times..

 I am truly FED UP with :apple: Apple  - I feel like returning the phone and buying something else.... I made a 3hr line to buy the phone on Friday, left the store yesterday after they told me (in a take or leave it attitude) that I had to wait in line for 2 1/2 hrs to buy a case for my Iphone (there was only one line to enter the store) and spent Father's day Sunday dealing with this P A I N on the phone !!!![/COLOR]

I was really Happy with the Iphone 3G - now I am kicking myself for selling it and buying this one!!!

UPDATE ____UPDATE ----

Went to the Apple store and the phone was exchanged -- the problem was definetely the phone.

Got home and activated it using a new restore ansd the transferred the apps pics and contacts --- SO FAR SO GOOD !!!
WILL KEEP YOU ALL POSTED !!!

I have spent close to 3 hours yesterday and the day before with Apple Care. Neil, the guy who helped me was very nice but couldn't figure out what is wrong.
I'm sorry to throw a damper but I started having problems after a I changed my Lynksis to Airport Express and Airport Extreme from Apple. So I can't explain the problem being the router compatibility because I'm using Apple routers now, and the macbooks at home connect fine.
I have restored the phone over 7 times, from the backup and as new, and still could not get a good connection. All I get is one bar.
Now that I found so many people having the same connectivity problems I'm hoping that Apple will do something about it.

Thank you!!

I have an Airport Extreme and was getting consistent and annoying dropouts.

The unit had a fixed channel setting sometime ago to deal with a neighbors broken router.

I changed that back to automatic and rebooted.

It picked a new channel (compared to the one it was locked to) and now it's working very reliably and quite quickly.

The airprort logs showed the following (I've replaced the remainder of the mac address with XXX):

I pressed the sleep button at 00:31 to end this connection but otherwise it is now constant until it sleeps itself.

For those wanting to check this on their airport my log level is set to informational (6). Logging is under "Advanced" - that gear wheel.

In Airport Summary the channel is shown and when running in Automatic mode this will be in parenthesis (round brackets like these) after the channel.

The setting can be changed under the wireless tab for the airport.

I suspect that either the security enhancements or frequency agility changes are causing some grief (how it's tied to your specific I iphone I don't know).

Hope this helps other.

I can't understand at all the whole log that you posted, but the change from the fixed channel to the automatic was a great tip.
I just did that and reset the modem and routers (Extreme and Express), and my 3GS wifi is working now.
Thank you so much!!!
I hope it continues this way!!!

Dns issue

I had the exact same issue described by many users in this thread, and after googling for a while I found out that it was a DNS conflict: in settings>wi-fi>bluearrow of your wifi access point, the router ip address was the same as the dns one(192.168.0.1).
I changed the dns of my iPhone to 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220, and now I can use my wifi at home again

The weird thing is that the problem arose suddenly, after many days of happy browsing time, for no apparent logical reason. Rebooting, resetting my iPhone, router and AE settings was worthless.

my wifi worked fine on my 3g until i updated to 3.0 ahhhhhh irritating! i really hope this gets fixed soon. i am currently restoring in the vague hope it will make a difference.

Well it seems 3.1 didn't do anything to fix the short WiFi issues. I am afraid to see if it fixed the mixed b/g/n problem.

known issue!

I am unable to log onto a b access point at work with wep on my 3gs at work. Every other device works fine on this access point. The password is 100% correct. I've been all over with Apple support and they act like its a big mystery, though I've seen many people reporting the same problem in other forums. You would think they would try to address something that is clearly a known issue!

Wifi issues/3.0 OS bug

I've been experiencing the same issues as the rest of you. I upgraded from the first gen iPhone to the 32gig 3gs (white). 3g network kicks butt! Very impressed! Long story short: Wifi issues upon 3.0.1 update. I believe the 3.0 OS doesn't agree with the wifi settings of the phone. Solution: change router settings name/password. Keep security at WPA. 802.11g. Save settings. Unplug modem/router for 5-10mins. Reconnect them and retry wifi connection. :)

I had my router set to b/g mixed. When I switched it to G it made a difference. My phone picks up the wifi signal instantly. Internet surfing is fast & snappy. Hopefully this solution works for many of you.

My wifi wasnt working at all (JB 3GS) and today i tested it out and wow it worked! idk what happened since i havent moved anything around. Is this good speed?

wifi issue resolved

After much discussion with Apple and Belkin. Someone at Belkin told me that the Iphone does not support WEP. Apple never mentioned or admitted that, had me trying all kinds of things that didn't work. In the end I changed my router to unsecured and then just allowed the mac addresses of my computers and iphone. Works fine now. Belkin 802.11b F5D6231-4 and 3gs.

^^^

that's not true, I've been using wep (sisters laptop won't work with anything else) and it works fine, the only thing that makes the 3gs work is disabling n

3gs wifi issues

I've just bought a brand new 3GS 16GB and I get wifi issues all the time. Currently working on 1 bar and old iPhone has full signal, doesn't make sense. Sometimes doesn't work at all and I have to turn phone off and on.
