My battery drains much faster as well as having horrible wifi! I've never experienced such bad wifi connection... Keeps asking for a password, I enter the right one, but it won't connect. Shutting down and restarting gets it to connect, but then it only shows one bar and is super slow. I think it is the 3.0 software, because my 3GS and 3G have the same issue, whereas the 3G under the old software never had an issue.

UPDATE NEEDS TO COME SOON!

Well My fix was short lived. I was back to having to type in my password and having it drop connections all day long yesterday. :(

My WIFI on my 3Gs is TERRIBLE! In my home, <10 ft away from my router, I cannot hold a signal for the life of me. Its a 10MB/ second DL 6MB/ second UL connection and it takes a good 5 minutes to load a dang page! I get quicker response on Edge. Thats not right. I'm not too happy.

Not to mention the cracks in my housing already

I have a second generation phone with the 3G software update and as soon as I updated I started to have WiFi problems. My range is very bad. I have to be on top of the router to pick up the signal.:(

Yep. Looking at the Apple forums, it seems that this is a 3.0 OS issue, not hardware, and affects SOME (but not all, and not all the time) iPhone 3G and 3GS units alike.

My 3G's WiFi was fine for about a week with 3.0, then it slowly decayed over a day and now it's useless. Signal is weak, and it doesn't even seem to know a locked from an unlocked network. "Unable to join the network" even 6 inches away from an access point that was fine before. (I'm not doing a restore since people aren't consistently reporting that it helps. But I did reset my wireless settings--no luck.)

3.1 is the only answer, I suspect.

Well in my case it's deffinately the b/g/n( up to 270) mode causing issues on my netgear dgn2000, Ive got the router set to the same security and channel as before getting the 3gs and after setting the mode to b/g only it hasn't missed a beat (changing back to b/g/n instantly causes the phone to take ages to join wifi and dropouts)

puzzled

i have new iphone 3gs, at home on wifi youtube does not load anything, my old 3g phone with os3 on the same wifi runs youtube fine, anyone has same issue or solution. both run fine on on 3G network. BUT what puzzles me is that if I connect to my neighbors unsecured wifi youtube works fine on the 3gs. I have an old b Dlink router 11mbps, my neighbor probably has a newer one, 44mps. anyone had this observation? SO maybe 3gs wifi does not work well with older routers.

My WIFI reception is actually better than my 3G, especially at my house where I was always surprised to get dropped signals considering I run an Airport Extreme Base Station.

I called Apple tech support, they said to try it on other WiFi networks, so I did I had no trouble. I called them back, they got me to reset my Airport Extreme (latest hardware and firmware) to factory defaults. Everything worked fine, till I re-enabled 5ghz N, then my problems started again.:(

I don't care if it's an Airport or 3GS problem but a fix would be really nice Apple.

I'm confused. Is this an issue with 3.0 or the phone?

I could reset my router and test that but none of the open networks I used on 2.2.1 are even recognized on 3.0 and I can't get everyone in the city to reset their routers so even if I get wifi working on my network the wifi issue is still an issue!

I have a 3G not a 3GS and prefer to be able to jailbreak/unlock IF I please so I'm thinking to get a new phone asap and hope I get one that 3.0 magically works right on before 3.1 drops cause then I'll be screwed with a phone running 3.1. BUT I'd rather just keep my phone IF this is a 3.0 problem.

Anyone have any recommendations? Please. I hate making decisions...lol

Just to add to this I've noticed lower signal on my new 3gs than I ever had on my previous 3g and where I work we all log onto a local wifi hotspot and since myself and 1 other person have had a 3gs we can't get on it hardly at all, maybe 5% of the time but others with an original 3g (on 3.0) can get on it fine! This is really really frustrating.

I feel the issue is most definitely due to the 3.0 firmware. What seems to have fixed it for me is setting my router to use only 802.11g instead of mixed b/g/n or g/n. Only my iPhone 3G with 3.0 had issues keeping a WiFi connection, yet no other wireless network adapter in my house has issues with the router mixed setting. I noticed my iPhone now can't find other WiFi signals as well as it used to prior to the 3.0 upgrade.

3.0 is the problem!

First off, I have the 1st gen iPhone. For almost two years, my iPhone worked flawlessly on any wifi network. After updating to 3.0, my wifi is flakey. Now, it doesn't automatically connect to any router. After going into settings, it will connect (I don't need to change any settings).

In august, I will be upgrading to the 3GS. Hopefully, Apple will release a software update.

I thought Apple was a company that thoroughly tested their updates prior to releasing them? Their software with their hardware, who would have thought we would have so many issues for an Apple device, like what happens on a PC based product.

Have we determined if it's a hardware or software issue?

I got my 3GS and noticed that even though Wifi works, it fluctuates between 1 and 3 bars all the time even though I'm less than 10 ft away from my router. I didn't see this with my original 3G.

I don't want to go through the hoopla of going to a Genius bar to get a replacement because I'm satisfied with the phone otherwise and don't want to risk getting a lemon like I did a few times last year with my original 3G.

can someone help

i know this isnt about wifi but...if i can remember correctly at some point i saw a menu or something somewhere on the phone where i could show only photos, only videos and both somewhere on the phone, but now i can't seem to find where this was...

as anyone seen this? still seeing it? any help would be greatly appreciated

I am in the same boat.

I have a few friends who are all fully certified network engineers, and I have gone through just about EVERYTHING with my network, and its not it.

It has to be something with the 3.0

Has anyone tried this at one of the AT&T WiFi hotspots? Maybe if it doesn't work well there Apple will be more enticed to get a fix into the 3.1 patch ;)

But even if it DOES work outside of just my home network, this is still bogus. AND PLUS if it shows up as a full signal, then declines, then I dont know what to make of it. But my old 3G is doing a similar thing... and like you said, I went through 7 phones last year! And like only 2 were from the GB, the rest were customer replacements...

I am calling an Apple Level 3 Tech I know very well tomorrow and seeing what he has to say about this...

Alright, so I had the same problem as everyone else. My wifi was very slow in fact it made more sense to use 3G than wifi. Anyways, I use the open source firmware on my linksys router, dd-wrt and have slow wifi like the rest of you. However! Last night I started changing setting and testing speed and found a huge huge difference when I changed my wirelss security to WEP. I know its not nearly as secure as WPA but when I switched to 802.11b and WEP now my wifi speeds are the max I get from my ISP. When I switch back to WPA it's sloooooow once again. Not sure if this will fix everyones wifi problems but after turning off/on things like frame burst , after burner, 802.11g/b I found that It was the wifi security that made the biggest differnce in speed.

So, still wondering I this is reason enough to try and get a replacement for my 3GS or wait for the next update.

Yup, same here. I can be standing 4 feet from my Time Capsule and showing only one bar of signal strength on the phone. It's sporadic though to be sure, other times I get full Wi Fi signal in my basement at the other end of the house.

Well basically if you changed that and the signal strength and EVERYTHING improved, then there are two options:
1) The chipset in the "bad batch" or all of thee 3GS models (mostly 32GB models from what I see) do not handle the WPA or WPA2 security standard correctly --> which I find odd seeing as almost all of the 3G models have no problems... however the 3GS might use a different WiFi chipset...

2) The software is bugging out, and when it tries to use the (if there is one) new WiFi chip in the 3GS with WPA or WPPA security, it is incorrectly handling the packets or the signal strength, causing severe degradation or complete loss of signal.

I am calling AppleCare later and seeing...

And did you see a difference in JUST speed? Or did you see an increase in speed AND signal strength?

Yes, my signal strength and stabilty are perfect when using WEP. Another thing is that I no longer see the large pauses and high ( 3000ms +) pings that I experienced before. I guess the phone is handling WEP a lot easier and thus transmission is a whole lot smoother. I guess I'll stop by ATT and let them test the phone on their wifi network. Anyone else get a huge improvement after making the same changes as I did?

Well I tried WEP and it didn't work.

What are your other settings? Do you have FrameBurst On/Off? What mode are you in (B/G Mix, etc.)?

I'm having exactly the same problem. Found a few people on Twitter who are experiencing it, too. Must only be some units, since lots are reporting good speeds. I have a black 32GB. What's yours? *edit: just saw your sig. Maybe it's our model?*

Already booked a Genius appointment tomorrow. I paid a lot of money for this phone, and there's no way I'll live with a flawed one. Probably won't be able to replace on the spot, but at least I can go back to my 3G while they get a replacement in.
I have a 32GB Black 3GS and so far everything works perfectly. I only wish the Wifi was stronger like my last phone.

I'll double check when I get home but from what I remember, I turned off afterburner, turned off frame burst, switched frequency to auto, set type to B and security to WEP 64 bit. After I did this my wifi was extremely better. I switched the settings back and it reverted to the slow unstable wifi. I'm going to try on some more wifi networks tonight and I'll update you.

Thanks, Obylix :)

I called Apple and I spoke to the rep I know. He said he personally is seeing more and more of these cases show up, and he said mine was the 3rd today. For the reason, and even another call center rep whose ipod touch was acting the SAME exact way, he sent a few emails to the engineering department to see their take.

I too am going out to try a few other networks, but I just REALLY hope it isn't my phone.

Let me know those settings and I will see what they do on my end...

Well I actually just reset my WPA2 security to WPA Personal and now everything is peachy.

I also deactivated that Frame Burst and also put my channel to the Channel 4 setting.

I don't know which of these fixed it, I will test it more later.

But this still proves that something freaky is happening with the iphone or OS 3.0...
