Someone asked exact question just recently, but my reasons haven't changed.

My car only accept iPods with the 30-pin dock connector. The Lightning adapter doesn't work. So I have a 64GB 4th-Gen iPod touch exclusively for use in the car. Works great and has good shock resistance compared to my iPod classic I used to use.

I have a fourth generation from 2010. It has iOS 6.1.6 (newest) and it has pretty bad battery (25 minutes maybe).

We have a total of 3 of the fourth generation iPod touches. The others were bought in early 2012 before the 5th generation iPod touch was released. They work well and still have good battery, enough to play games on for an hour, possibly more than an hour.

Try a full iTunes restore on the 2010 4th gen,it might help it,but it is 4 years old and it is expected that it will run slow

I got mine in 2012 as well, and I get around 1 hour of battery too, but only while playing 3D games.

I used one up until December 2013. The lag was unbelievable, so I upgraded to the 5th gen, and then an iPhone 5S.

My Grandma uses an iPod touch 4th gen for Skype & Facetime duty and an iPhone 3G for making mobile calls & playing unblock me. Serves her very well and its nice to see that old tech can still be put to good use after my sister got an iPhone 5 of her own.

Restoring as new doesn't help it. I've done it several times. Sadly the battery is a goner:(
Too bad since it's computing performance is great still.

Always plugged in- don't know how the battery works except that it doesn't drain instantly. On iOS7 (accidentally upgraded) but only play music- works just fine.

iOS 7 on 4th gen iPod Touch? that's not possible is it... or have I misread you..

We have some at my work + a plethora of a ton of other iOS devices. They're pretty slow and on some of them, the home buttons don't work well anymore. Even ones that were brand new (long story), the home buttons don't seem to work that well.

You can kinda work around the bad home button via Settings > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch On.

You can get refurb 16 gig iPod Touch 5th gens (MUCH better and faster device) for $149 at http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod/ipod_touch right now. But, they lack the rear camera of the refreshed $199 16 gig 5th gen. Prior to this, you had to go w/the 32+ gig models of the 5th gens to get the rear camera.

I still use my third generation for music, videos down the gym and occasional mobile web browsing. It won't turn off, but apart from that, it's fine.

My iPod touch 4g is still running strong, albeit slowly. Its battery life is good enough for gaming and reading while commuting, and as a pocket sized calendar/contacts device. There are apps I can't use because they've been updated to run only under iOS 7.

If Apple releases a 6g I would buy one on release day, but until then this is a fine supplement to my iPad Air. I still have an 80g iPod, the version before classic, thats fine for playing music on a radio with a dock.

2nd Gen on 4.2.1 still going strong as my main iPod for music, audiobooks and podcasts. I wouldn't dream of letting it near the internet any more though.

Hey guys, I am kinda curious to see if folks here still have older iPod Touches, such as the 4th or 3rd gen. What iOS it is on? Does it lag for you? Do you have battery issues?

I am on 6.1.6 with a 4th gen and my battery is pretty weak, drains fast, especially when playing games/watching youtube. And it lags pretty bad, even without a jailbreak. I am thinking of downgrading to iOS 5.1.1

Cheers! King.

I do still have my third generation iPod touch and it is still rocking iOS 5.1.1; though I don't really use it anymore. Last I did, it ran this OS just fine, but it literally only has enough room for my music library, so there are no apps for me to gauge performance on. That being said, solely in terms of stock apps, it does seem to have fared better than my first generation iPad, which I also still have and which is also capped at iOS 5.1.1.

I'd give thought to a fifth generation iPod touch; especially with these prices:

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod/ipod_touch

I'm not sure that I'd buy one new (even at their lovely new price-points) at this point given how close we are to either (a) a new generation of iPod touch or (b) a scenario where the current iPod touch is three generations of Apple A-series CPUs behind and clearly on its last version of iOS and not likely to be updated or refreshed ever again.

2nd gen and 4.2.X

After reading the OP when it was fresh, I decided to dust off my 2nd gen touch. I used to watch the battery level once in a while, not wanting it to drain completely but eventually I forgot about it. When I booted it up I was afraid the battery would be toast but it seems to have some resilience so far. It had problems syncing with iTunes but after reloading IOS and jumping through a bunch more hoops it finally synced properly. Basically I had mothballed it when I started using smart phones.

Back to the sync issue...
I have to say it wasn't the good 'ol Apple experience I am used to; really shouldn't have been that difficult to sync. I know the IOS version is old but it obviously still talks with current iTunes so why it wasn't the slick, seamless I usually experience is beyond me. Well, it is old and I suppose Apple cannot keep track of all the old hardware still in use. At any rate it seems to be working well and the only thing missing I wish it could do is wifi-N.

Haven't used a 3/4th gen in years, but it was HORRIFICALLY slow last time I did. I guess more to do with being horribly RAM starved than the CPU/GPU, probably. Huge pauses doing much of anything, even starting/pausing audio playback while doing anything at all else.

Its already pretty much amazing that a device with 256 ram can still response to you in anyway.

I started using my 3rd gen touch again recently. It's running the last compatible OS, iOS 5.1.1

- Battery life is poor but not terrible. It can last a day with moderate use or a few hours of heavy use.
- Performance is surprisingly good. It doesn't lag much as I thought it would.
- RAM is a big issue and apps consistently refresh, even if you just go to the home screen and immediately reopen the same app.
- iMessage is unstable. It receives messages perfectly, but sending messages will almost always fail. When it doesn't, it takes hours for the message to actually go through and will still report that it failed.
- The app situation is OK. A lot of apps have older compatible versions, though they're obviously missing some new features.

If it weren't for the iMessage issue, I would be using this as my main device instead of my 5th gen.

yes, my 2008 (2nd gen?) is still being used. However tomtom new update said this is last updates for this iPod. So I might have to move on finally.

I have owned a 2nd gen (passed down) a 4th gen (given to a friend, lags but is on iOS 6), and a 5th gen (sold, was running iOS 7.1.2). The 4th gen surprisingly is holding up strong, last time I saw it.

I also just downgraded to 5.1.1 on my 4th gen, and the situation is similar.
-Battery life is bad, but that's due to the CPU never shutting down
-RAM is an issue when a lot of apps remain open in the background, and some apps do refresh themselves sometimes
-iMessages work fine
-Apps-Fine.I have older versions

I guess the iPod Touch 4g really is better then the 3g, especially due to the A4
