I also just downgraded to 5.1.1 on my 4th gen, and the situation is similar.
-Battery life is bad, but that's due to the CPU never shutting down
-RAM is an issue when a lot of apps remain open in the background, and some apps do refresh themselves sometimes
-iMessages work fine
-Apps-Fine.I have older versions

I guess the iPod Touch 4g really is better then the 3g, especially due to the A4

I'm surprised that iMessage works for you. I thought maybe the problem was caused by my jailbreak, so I restored it but it still doesn't work. Disappointing.

I've been wanting to pick up a 4th gen to add to my collection, I'm just waiting for a 64 GB to hit the refurbished store. Currently only 32 is available.

Still have an active 2nd gen with good battery life. It runs well as a video-audio-app device, but I was never impressed with the email or internet.

A 2nd gen? Wow I am surprised it still runs good even for music. My friend has a 1st gen and it is horrible, and I think the 2nd gen only brought minor improvements

I use a 4th generation iPod Touch 8 Gb (would like 64 Gb one) and it works very well for VLC and TV show watching.

Yes, iPod touch 5th gen, love it and it works as I intended it to work. Run apps, check email, some online WiFi use like occasional text messaging, and of course iTunes music listening. I even do some online shopping with things like Amazon Store App, and of course checking my eBay auctions, etc. FaceTime once in a blue moon.

Some uses are restricting and limited, like Maps (Apple or Google Maps) because the mapping app is worthless unless you have an online connection, which in this case means Wifi. That means I CANNOT use it while on the road.

Eventually, an iPhone 6 might replace my current iPod touch. But then again, the iPod touch does not cost me some $85 in monthly subscription fees from ATT/Verizon/etc.

Once I do get my iPhone 6, I will retire my iPod touch into permanent "music album repository" use. This is more important since I don't subscribe to Match. So there are some music albums that I have long ripped from old CDs, or from older iTunes albums that have since disappeared from iTunes Store.

You don't have to spend anything like that. I spend $53/month on AT&T for unlimited talk, text, and 2.5GB data. You can do 1GB data for roughly $40. (Or their Cricket brand is unlimited, though throttled, I guess.)

I finally got my hands on a refurbished 4th gen touch from Apple but I'm a little disappointed with the quality. Usually Apple's refurbished products are like new, but this one had some scratches on the rear and a few fingerprints right out of the box. However, it came with Earpods which surprised me, I was expecting the old style earbuds that originally shipped with this model.

It's technically a downgrade from my fifth gen, but I'm really glad to have it. I'd rather have less RAM, a worse camera, and slower processor if it means I can keep iOS 6 forever :)

It came with EarPods! :O

jailbroken 2nd gen on iOS 3.1 here - the battery is pretty weak, when used for gaming, but it's still pretty good when listening to music. pretty responsive too - glad i never updated to 4.0

my 4g has been powered off ever since i messed around with purple tools (never EVER get this apple internal tool) and shut it down using purplesniff. I'm too afraid to turn it back on honestly.

Yep

Me, wife and 2 boys each have iPod Touch 4th gens using highest supported iOS. Everyone uses them for music and boys who don't have tablets also use theirs to FaceTime and Messenger with friends and family.

Wife and I both have 2011 era cars with iPod enabled in-dash radios, so they get a lot of use on the road.

I also take the iPod Touch instead of the IPad when I travel to stay connected as wifi spots are easy to find. Even KOA campgrounds have wifi when I go camping.

Lastly, Amazon Prime Music now lets you download songs to your devices for offline playback with no additional charges, which has breathed new life into our iPods.

I use my 4gen with iOS 6.1.6. Its a little laggy but i live well with it. Battery is not great but i use it a lot and charge almost everydays. Things are made to be used

I use my 3rd gen for Pandora in my BMW. Plus it runs BMW apps tethered to my iPhone or mifi. No camera, old 30 pin charge adapter.. No problem.

Here's my 2008 MB model second generation. Still runs great on iOS 3.1.3, jailbroken. Had iOS 4, but I found that I preferred iOS 3 for it's speed and simplicity.

Just looking to install my old apps on it now. Tap Tap Coldplay especially. One of the few that had the songs included in the app, since the servers are shut down the rest of them are useless.

Does anyone know how to remove all of my personal information off of a jail broken iPod touch on iOS 6.1.3 without losing the jailbreak and bumping the iOS to the current 7 version? Is there a way to restore without upgrading the software?
