No such luck for me I'm afraid, it really is that bad. My photo here is from its original vertical shot. The one below that is when I rotate the phone!

The only way I can replicate what you've posted is to take a photo in portrait orientation, view it in landscape, pinch to make the photo smaller and take a screenshot.
 
Ooops, my bad (good observation!).

I have found one which my girlfriend took on her HTC and sent to me. This one fills my screen and looks perfect.

Yeah, but HTC achieves by cropping the image to 16:9 (the sensor isn't truly 16:9), which effectively means you'll lose part of your photos. However, if you're ok with that, you should be able to take photos in 16:9 imo.
 
In response to the OP, I just went through my camera roll, the pictures taken from my iphone 4 that I've loaded on to my 5 are the ones with the black borders because they were taken with the smaller display on the iphone 4. However the pictures taken with the 5 are full screen on the iphone 5 for obvious reason. I hope that was what you were asking...if not then I don't know.
