I went back to the Verizon store after realizing that I need a new SIM card to switch the phone back to my line.

The manager told me that if I wait 24 hours, the SIM card that came with the iphone 5 can be switched to a different line, so no need for a separate SIM card.

My plan is to wait until tomorrow to test this out and see if it's true.

But your phone works on your line, just with 3g and no LTE???? Is that correct? The sim is only for the LTE right?
 
You did this over the phone or at a store?

But you for sure can go in and get them switched today? You don't have too tell tomorrow? That's the on,y thing I'm worried about.

I spoke to them over the phone, but I haven't tried activating anything yet because of the confusion over it all. I'm trying to determine if I have to go get a new sim or not, and apparently the local stores are out of the sim cards.

No. No cell service or anything when the SIM card has been removed. I tried turning the phone completely off and on without the SIM card, and unless I'm doing something wrong, I get no service at all.

What an epic fail....how could they be out of sim cards, this was poorly planned. Hopefully the 24 hours trick works.

i still have a phone- I'm using my 4S. The iP5 is currently on a line that rarely gets used and is normally occupied by a flip phone used for emergencies.

I can't deactivate my other line, my mother uses it and she's leaving town in the morning. Couldn't use an iphone if her life depended on it anyway.
 
According to the reps I have spoken to today, you have to activate the phone on the line it was intended for first (even though others here on MR has said that doesn't apply anymore), and then switch the iPhone 5 to the line you want, and replace the other line's original phone. Fing confusing. Then, you have to wait 24 hours (hopefully less; they're "working on it") until you can use LTE. I'm so confused now. I'm sorry.

This is how we do it at work when we use a "buddy upgrade" on a business account. I don't know if it'll work on a personal account. Takes 20 mins max if you have to call customer service.

1. Activate device on the line in the order slip.
2. Power off both devices
3. Do an ESN change on the line you want the new device on.
4. Say you already have a SIM card, and type that number in.
5. Turn on new device and let it activate. ( I never had to wait 24hrs, lucky?)
6. Call customer service if it fails.
 
What if you're a new customer? I'm switching from AT&T and am porting my number.

I'd like to think that when I turn it on, my old iPhone will just flip to "no service" or "invalid SIM", but somehow I doubt that.
 
Well it's real simple, if after telling me I can do an alternate upgrade, then not having the option available to select on pre-order, then telling me many times to go ahead and order on the other line and they can easily switch...only to find that now I will only have a paperweight because they have no SIMs to give me. That is outright breach of contract as they are unable to provide me with service....and fraud to get me to order something that wouldn't function properly.
 
Confused. I ordered new phone service with Verizon (was with TMobile), but ordered three phones with new numbers. To switch our new phone numbers to the phone numbers we have with TMobile (and thus cancel TMobile service), what do we need to do? Is this a separate discussion than this thread is discussing?

You will likely need to call or go into a store to have Verizon take control of the numbers. Typically they will call T-Mobile, tell them that you're switching, and hand the phone to you to confirm. T-Mobile may or may not get down on their knees and plead for you to stay. Once you confirm, Verizon takes control of the numbers and assigns them to your lines as necessary.

Now they're saying it will take up to 48 hours to activate on a new line. If you do activate it, it kills the other line and will stay dead. He said to not even bother turning it on.

So great, I now have a nice shiny paperweight all weekend.

Perhaps there is more in play at the moment with your situation than I am aware of, but the "up to 48 hours" comment is something that they always say to cover their rears if it ends up taking a while, especially on a day like today when everyone is activating devices and lines.

I have found that with most new devices activation is fairly quick, on the order of "minutes" rather than "hours" or "days".

I have a 4G sim card already through my thunderbolt. Once my phone comes in I will activate it and then try switching the lines using my current sim. Should work as SIM card is linked to the line and not the phone. Post the results here

the porting is automatic and done via NPAC

when i ported some verizon numbers to AT&T i had to call in with the phone #, social security and maybe a birthdate and it was done within minutes. including closing the verizon accounts automatically

that sim card is way too big for the iphone. i have a sim card for a droid bionic. the iphone is using a nano sim, these sims in here now are huge
