After waiting in line this morning for 4 hours(got there at 5 am) and opening new line for the i5, I didn't open the package but went straight across the street to the Verizon store and had to wait but they went through this process:

1. Turn phone on activate phone on line used to purchase phone.
2. Since the line i wanted had a iPhone 4 they had to get new SIM card because my number never had a SIM card with it.
3. Put new SIM card in i5(just shortening name), ten switched lines with newly activated line .
4. Turned phone on waited about 5 minutes and phone activated on line wanted and LTE in full effect.
5. Walk out of store happy with new iPhone 5 and proceed on with life for the day on 4 hrs sleep!

that sim card is way too big for the iphone. i have a sim card for a droid bionic. the iphone is using a nano sim, these sims in here now are huge

dang! Im going to hit up a couple of local places around columbus circles (NY) Thats where I scooped up my first sim card.

You will likely need to call or go into a store to have Verizon take control of the numbers. Typically they will call T-Mobile, tell them that you're switching, and hand the phone to you to confirm. T-Mobile may or may not get down on their knees and plead for you to stay. Once you confirm, Verizon takes control of the numbers and assigns them to your lines as necessary.

This particular thread is discussing people that are using an upgrade for a different line to activate the new phone on their line (existing customers and lines).

Thank you. I thought there was a disconnect between my question and this thread.

Your process is exactly how Verizon handled mine, so i can personally attest that a new sim is needed IF you had to first activate the line on the "dummy" line and then move it back to the line you the iphone to be on.

Oh and i wanted to add that I checked myVerizon online and it still shows unlimited on my line that i moved the iphone to.

How did they re-activate the phone on the other line? Did you have to bring it in or did they just flip it back?

Sorry to mention, but yes I did this in-store. They literally had to take the sim card(that originally came with the iphone and hence was activated with the dummy line) out after it was activated, put in a NEW sim card (this time with my line that had unlimited data) and then activated it with my line.

I am trying not to kill the other line, which is being used by my mom. She won't be with me so I don't want her line to be dead for long.

Yep, the other line (dummy) was my mom's line as well and i did it all without having her phone with me. I called after everything was done and she didn't even notice anything about her phone not having service for that short period of time. So in all, this was very seamless FOR ME, but looks like i may be the minority in all this. Hope that helps!

I must be stupid because I can't figure out where, on a Verizon iphone 5 you access the sim card. I thought they were built in.

So it seems I got it to work without getting a new sim card and doing it over the phone. I did not turn on the iPhone 5. The rep told me to go on the website and go to switch a device. I did it through there and I had the option to keep unlimited data. It worked just fine. I called up Verizon after to make sure I still had unlimited and the dummy phone line had no data plan on it and was all confirmed.

So it looks like we have our first data point right here, maybe others should follow suit?

Good to hear. Just for future reference, did you turn on the iphone first and then called to activate or did you call before turning it on?

Yes, please give details. This was a line switch right?

I have UDP on 4s, used another line (dumb phone to upgrade). Got phone at 1:00, opened box, did NOT turn on phone

1) call verizon, from dumb phone actually
2) confirm that i can keep my UDP by using dumb phone upgrade
3) ask rep to activate my number on IP5
4) rep walked me through setting up my phone (not necessary but she sounded cute)
5) rep sent me test text message
6) have rep confirm UDP was kept
7) had rep drop the 2gb data plan from dumb phone
8) IP5 bliss

hope that helps

Good stuff, now how much is the dummy line each month? Do you have an old flip phone you are using now with the line? Did you have a family plan or like me have an invidudual ULD?

Has anyone else successfully completed the switch online using Verizon's website and able to keep their unlimited data plan? I'm considering using the website because I don't have access to another phone line for a couple of hours but want to make sure I don't screw myself over by not calling instead.

last time I bought an iphone at the apple store they would not let me leave without activating it. How did you get out of the store without activating it??????

Please see my post #56...it was all done in the Verizon store (activation on "dumb" phone line, take out original sim, insert new sim, activate on my line)

Confirming that online activation works and I kept my unlimited data plan. You need to type in the 4G Sim ICCID number that's on your receipt during one of the steps.

Frustrating

I just went into a Verizon store. They had a handful of iPhone 5's in stock. My line is not available for an upgrade but 3 other lines on our shared plan are. It has never been an issue before to do alternate upgrades. Verizon said they can not do the alternate upgrade right now because they do not have any extra sim cards. Is there ANY way to get around this? There are numerous stores with the iPhone 5 in stock that are close by and I would love to get one.

Why didn't apple make you activate it? They wouldn't let me leave the store last time without activating it.

i can also say that just doing it over the internet works. i was also on the phone at the same time. i told him i wanted to keep my unlimited data and he told me i wouldnt be able to, but i activated it on my line without doing it on the line i upgraded it from, and unless they change it by the next billing cycle, it still says unlimited data

Sorry, you said another user did the same thing as you, but he indicated that he bought the phone and then "went across the street to Verizon".
