Anybody have any ideas how to fix this, or do we need to just wait for a MacOS driver update? I looked around Belkin's site and didn't see any drivers etc. I also checked Realtek, nothing there either which makes sense in a way - it's an Apple driver.

I believe that beyond leaving accurate feedback to Apple, no manufacturer (nor realtek) has an incentive to remedy a problem evidently caused by Apple itself. I just hope that everyone experiencing problems will report it via the site ( https://feedbackassistant.apple.com ) or via applefeedback:// on their mac.

I just got a UGreen 2.5G adapter, same drop in speed. No surprise though, it has the same Realtek chip id 0x8156, so probably the same driver being used as the Belkin and Anker.

I wonder if anyone here can test it with the 15.1 beta....?

i'm going to be ordering this tomorrow, it's a pretty cheap usb-c 5Gbit adapter and it works in MacOS with drivers and works at faster than 2.5Gbit (gets about 4.5 Gbit or so it seems).

it's based on a newer RTL chipset and doesn't seem to be stuck at 2Gbit/sec. I believe it's also on amazon US site too.

Thank you, ordered. But if the problem is in the CDC-NCM driver in sequoia we could have nasty surprises...

I am beginning to fear that the problem may even be worse than a few hundred mbps less.

I have securityspy (an excellent ip cam software) running on my mac and ever since I installed sequoia the log has started to show sporadic loss of connection to the cameras (never happened before).

I too started experiencing slower ethernet speeds with all Realtek 8156 2.5gb adapters on both intel and m series Macs since Sequoia. Same adapter on MacBook Air that is still on Sonoma works as expected. Bought a Wavlink 5gb adapter and that gets proper speeds up to my ISP plan.

@DanPDX which chipset does it use? You can see where it's posted in System Info, HW/Ethernet - check the first page of this thread. The failed ones are all Realtek 8156. Wondering what the Wavlink uses...

Seems 8157

D-link helped as imagined, it was worth a try. :)

Products: DUB-E250

Thank you for contacting D-Link technical support.

Unfortunately, there's little-to-nothing D-Link can do since the device is technically working, nor do we have any influence over Apple updates.

I've a couple Thunderbolt to 10 GBe adapters, however, they both get really hot and I don't think they work that great.

Just ordered the Wavlink adapter and let's see how it performs with my 3 Gbps internet.

I had a Sonnett 10G, it got really hot and then disconnected. No good.

I also ordered a Wavlink! Fingers crossed. I am wondering if Apple will fix the driver for the 8156 Realtek chip

Just tested 15.1 beta 3 (public) doesn't correct the issue. Tested with a few different Realtek based adapters...all produce slower than expected results. Swap back to 5gb adapter same cable and speed is back to expectations.

☹️

Tested the 2.5gb adapters on an iPad and the same thing...much lower speeds than expected. 5gb adapter give speeds up to my ISP plan speed. Not sure what happened in the latest OS to affect the Realtek 8156 chipset.

WP-UT5(RTL8157) can achieve speeds over 2 Gbps on macOS 15.0, but unfortunately, it is much slower than on 14.5. Here are some differences between 14.5 and 15.0.

Have a Wavlink adapter coming, I'll post when it arrives and I test it. I think some others are using that here too.

The problem remains: those who find the same speed as an 8156 with sonoma is because they have a larger bandwidth and no longer suffer from the performance drop due to having switched to an 8157.

But it is an illusion: the speed problem remains and that of the unreliable network to be tested.

Also tested with ipad pro M2 18.0.1, same results as with the two macs.
Just to hurt myself also tested with 15.1 developer beta 6, same results.

Always zero response from Apple on the (long and detailed) feedback sent.

Thanks for the update @Wolf1701 . I have sent feedback plus 2 addendums of additional info. No response yet, I am just hoping they are working on it.

I am actually encouraged that the 8157 is also affected, as it's much newer - I was starting to fear the Apple wouldn't bother with the 8156 anymore since it is "old". Sounds like the problem, being in common at least between these 2 chipsets, might be one that needs to be fixed.

It amazes me that none of the specialised sites such as macrumors or 9to5 do not highlight the problem, at which point we have established that it is not limited to poor macos but also affects those that receive more attention such as ios and ipados 18.

Yet in the newsrooms they must have some usbc ethernet adapter ;)
