There's been very few reasons to stick with iPhone:
- grandfathered AT&T unlimited plan - that is gone
- iMessage - with popularity of Viber, Telegram etc this is not so important anymore
- security - the only thing which keeps me with Apple
but even that is becoming problematic when you learn every day how several apps
keep sending your personal data to Facebook, even when I never had a fb account...

BUT there is more reasons to abandon Apple - horrible quality of all the recent products,
tons of issues, ignorant approach and a big middle finger shown to the loyal customers every day.

If next iPhone is still the same with more unresolved or new issues, there is no way
I'm gonna pay $2000 for that. None.

I am still thrilled with my XS Max and my Apple smart battery case. I don't care what Samsung or Android does. I care what Apple does. I don't need Apple to the leader with cutting edge technology that has little use in the phone or OS. I don't need Apple to try and stay ahead of Samsung. I don't need Apple to release a product just for the sake of releasing it, when it still looks like it is in beta. What I do need, is for Apple to continue to do their best with the products they release, whether it is every year, or every other year etc. What I do need is for Apple to continue to give me good customer service. What I do need is for Apple to continue to refine the OS, so that it, along with the apps, continue to make my use of the products more productive and enjoyable as they have been over the years.

Good post.

Has anyone else just completely stopped caring about smart phones or is it just me?

The past few years I have really cared less and less about it. In September this one will be 4 years old, and my provider keeps throwing deals to upgrade at me constantly... I really don't care to spend the money or the time setting one up. I just don't care about them any more.
I agree. I feel that way too, Smartphones are now like TVs a mature product. I rememeber when the S9 came out last year you could be forgiven thinking it was the S8 if you looked at it.

Not at all.

I have been buying Samsung phones each year starting with the Note 4/Note Edge and I currently own the Note 9/S9+. This year, I feel that there is nothing I really need to have on the S10 to make me spend more money when my S9+ and Note 9 will easily last another year, plus my Note 8 is still amazing and I got the screen replaced back in August.

I have also been an iPhone user since the original and I have an XS Max that I use daily as well. Each platform has their pluses and minuses and that's why I prefer to use both. This is the year that I will take a break from buying the latest Samsung phones.

my iphone se works just as good as the new apple flagships. just less bells and whistles. I had the X before. I love being able to use my phone one handed again without contorting my hands to reach parts of the screen.

I don’t mind the extra price so much, providing the products work the way they are supposed to. Don’t give me fancy emojis and a new phone with no reception. I’ve been with Apple since the 3GS buying many phones and iPads throughout the years. This year was the first time that I tried 2 Maxes, both with poor connectivity and bad reception - I gave up. I thought about upgrading my iPad Pro 9.7 to a new larger one this year but am concerned about the issues others are having with the screen responsiveness. Previously always excited to upgrade, not so much anymore.

I prefer iOS so therefore i’ll be sticking with the iPhone, but I wish you could get it on better handsets.
This.
Had a play with galaxy S10 yesterday. Phone looks super-gorgeous. 'Dark Mode' is surreal but ultimately, ios just feels smoother (guess the brain is hardwired to ios by now).
So yes... We can cast a longing glance at Android system hardware but will remain in the ecosystem.

Exciting times for iPhone users.

Prices should drop & the phones will continue to improve with hopefully a refined foldable option in coming years.

Label me optimistic!

Sadly Apple will never drop prices, Maybe a slim chance that they stay the same price as the current phones, but a decrease? Apple is to greedy for that lol.

I think this is fair. I actually see society (or at least I hope) moving away from large screened phones and going for a more minimalist smaller phone and potentially wearables. I expect AR glasses with very minimal, but meaningful interactions, with a focus on communication, health, and discovery/activities/travel. I think we are already seeing problems with young people and their phones.

What's the innovation that OP is talking about? The foldable phones shown last weeks are a gimmick as of now. And 5G network availability isn't here yet.

My XS is awesome, best phone I've owned so far.
My iPad Pro 11 is awesome, best tabled I've owned so far.
My Apple Watch Series 4 is awesome, best watch I've owned so far.
My 2017 27" SSD iMac is awesome, best computer I've owned so far.
My AirPods are amazing, best wireless earphones I've owned so far.

I know Samsung phones have great displays. But loaded with crapware. And It's Android..
I know Huawei phones have great value. But it's Android.. And I'd support the worst industry espionage company in the world..

And don't forget that all of my devices talk to each other. It's amazing that I can have the same application both on my computer, my phone, my tablet, and on my watch.

I'm fully aware that Apple products aren't cheap. But I'm no teenager anymore either so my economy can support the Apple ecosystem.

What do I get for the increased price?
- Store on all platforms, which I think is vastly superior to the competition.
- The magic when all the devices talk to each other.
- Privacy (not something I cared much about when I was younger, but now I do).
- Security (all apps being approved by Apple is both a blessing and a curse. I love the blessing-side of it. My life is busy nowadays, I don't have energy to think about antivirus software or ransomware).
- Speed. The Apple CPUs are true innovation. Way better than the competition. This is why much of the competition have been found with their pants down trying to fake their benchmark scores.
- it Just Works™ (I'm fully aware of all the silly software/hardware mistakes Apple have done recently. No one is perfect. And Apple can definitely improve. But it's even worse on other platforms, trust me).

After seeing the S10...yes, a bit.

Would I buy one? No. But I'm still sick of seeing Apple do more of the same over and over (same old rounded iPhone 6 sides on the "all new design language for the next decade"), and kicking up the prices FAR beyond inflation or any reasonable increase; spare me the "new technology is expensive" arguments because the iPhone 4 was an absolutely colossal revolution over the 3GS and it cost the same.

Right now Apple doesn't build my ideal phone, which is a flagship phone in the Xr size with a high PPI screen. All these phones in the lineup and they don't have a high pixel density mid-sized phone.

EDIT: Being forced to use an Intel modem isn't helping the situation any.
The S10 like the Xs (max) is a rehashed s9 with more stuff. 5G right now has significant limitations and newer to be arriving chipsets will be better than the one in the s10.

And with the increased prices of the s10 I’m even more happy with my max.

With the to be released xi (max) there will be more stuff also and the same conversation will come around.

Well s10plus 512gb is $200 cheaper than xsmax. And you also get the free Galaxy buds and wireless charger. Effectively s10plus is $500 cheaper (considering you have to pay extra $70 fast charger for xs max)

It's a great deal, but I am not sure people who are spending that much are necessarily price driven with their decisions. I would guess most stay within their platform/ecosystem for a bunch of reasons, but a few hundred dollar swing either way likely isn't going to force someone to switch platforms. Their pricing is definitely a positive for what you are getting though, so it has potential with some buyers.

Even if you are diehard iPhone fan, you can't help but have bitter taste about the overpriced xs max compared to the s10+

I would never buy any Samsung product, any regardless how good it is. Remember they got their start from
Apple/US tech companies. South Korea, China all copycats. Then US consumers start thinking they are better.....This is the same company that refused to pay court ordered penalties for copyright infringement....

I know I don't, I can't really speak for others. Personally, there are advantages that I see when it comes to integration, the ecosystem, software, security, privacy, stuff like that I don't mind paying a little bit of a premium for. I don't look at it or feel that it's overpriced - Samsung can come in cheaper because they are the manufacturer. That's normal. Both options are really good, especially today though, so it's great that consumers have a choice. It just usually comes down to platform preference.

The max only seems overpriced because Samsung is giving away the store to move the s10. However when one considers top notch apple support, 5 years of o/s updates and etc its the Samsung that appears overpriced at any price. I mean let’s throw our personal definition of “overpriced” around instead of having a reasonable, adult conversation.

Seriously? These folding screens are a gimmick that won't last. No thanks.

ha...
That one is saved for future reference...

Right there with you - the last few times I was in the Apple store (picking up dongles for her..), I would just walk right by the tables with newer (large) iPhones.

My SE does what I want wonderfully - gets out of my way - is easy to carry with me - doesn't cost a fortune so I'm not worried about it endlessly...

I just don't want or need to spend my life interacting with a huge $1k piece of glass connected to very questionably "useful" online garbage seemingly at every moment of even brief boredom or downtime...

I'm amazed and sort of disgusted by looking around everywhere in public and seeing everyone gazing into the abyss of some glass screen. It's like a weird dystopian nightmare.

If the Apple prices weren't outrageous, I'd still be happy with Apple's offerings. It's not slightly expensive, it's crazy expensive and the competition is trying hard whereas Apple is sitting back. Apple has always sat back and then executed but the problem is the sitting back and sky high prices don't go well together.

Has anyone else just completely stopped caring about smart phones or is it just me?

Last year I used my iPhone as my primary device as much as I could. I sold my iPad, barely used anything else. I had an external bluetooth keyboard and used it as much as I could (on personal time).

That didn't last too long. lol. Although it was nice to have one device, iOS is limited. I now use my MBP primarily, I got another iPad for reading/news/consumption (youtube, college notes/studying), and now I use my iPhone for ... a LOT less than I ever have.

My iPhone acts as a GPS guidance system for my driving (re-directing me when traffic is really bad), a means of communication with family when I'm out and about, and a camera. It is important, but nowhere near where it used to be.

I am planning on keeping my setup for 2-3 years. I'm much more excited about my MBP, my iPad than I am my iPhone. I'm pretty happy with my workflow right now.

Really hope USB C is normalized in 2-3 years when I'm considering upgrading my iPad/iPhone.

Not really. Financing the phone takes the bite out of the price.

I love my XS Max.

Agreed. My wife and I went from the 8+ to the Xs MAX. We love this phone. Now, because of the price, we're going to be keeping it for 2-3 years before we even consider upgrading, unlike before. Also, because we have MBPs and iPads (new additions to our Apple device lineup mid last year).

We love our Xs MAX phones.

As a iPhone owner/user, are any of you starting to feel the pain from sticking with Apple and watching especially this year so far, many innovative things coming to other phones and we are still using devices from a company who seems to have decided to stop innovating, and just release the same things year after year but make us pay more for it?

Dont get me wrong, I love Apple. I have the XS Max, Apple Watch Series 4, New iPad Pro, Airpods, Macbook Pro and 2 Apple TV boxes.

At what point do we as Apple Consumers stop allowing Apple Eco System which is what they depend on to keep us buying the devices that are falling more and more behind?

Just something I was thinking about today.

Seeing the new phones over the past few weeks and months that have been coming out, I feel we are getting kicked to the curb by Apple and EVEN IF the last 2 weeks of releases have kicked Apple in the a$$ to wake up, it will be at least 2 years before we see anything new and even then, it will be 2 years still behind Samsung and others.

Most people stick with Apple for the iOS. Besides, I think people claiming they aren't innovating enough anymore is not entirely justified. They had huge breakthroughs before so it may feel like they are stagnant now but you can't expect them to be coming out with ground-breaking products every year.

The introduction of the iPhone X was a leap forward and now they are polishing/upgrading that while they work on something totally new. Once these phones reach the end of their life cycle they will introduce something new. A life cycle is difficult to gauge, though I would assume it's at least 2 years.

We don't know for sure what Apple is working on, maybe they'll surprise us in the very near future. If they don't come out with anything totally new in the next year or two then maybe we can start to complain.
