in a couple of weeks, just after Christmas , Im going to give the iPad Air to my little son and buy a Mini 4.
I have a 13" MBP, I don't need a 9.7" iPad anymore, so I'm planning to use the Mini when I need max portability and the MacBook Pro for everything else.

That sounds like it will be great. I think the 13 inch MacBook and iPad mini 4 combo works great; I have the MBA 13 and I think it is a good combo to have with the mini 4.

yep.
I previously had a MBP 15" / iPad Air combo.
I need more portability and roughly the same computational power, so I choose MBP 13" / Mini 4

I'm in a similar boat. Currently have a 2010 MBP 15" and an iPad 4. Planning on getting a rMB in the spring, and I'm hoping to upgrade my iPad at the same time to one of whatever iteration of Air or Mini is out. I've recently taken a liking to using my iPad for work (MS office word and excel), but have been limited by not being able to use the new multitasking features. Does anyone have any experience with using MS Office on a mini? Is it practical to consider the Mini's screen size for multitasking, or should I only be looking at the Air?

I think you can totally do work on the mini, if you are ok with the size of items on the screen. Using two apps at once is fine for me so far, but I'm not doing any serious stuff with the split screen apps. I still think it could work, but I'd check it out in person using the specific apps you plan on working with, in order to get an idea of whether it will work for you personally.

While my apple store graciously had downloaded MS Office on the Macbooks to test it out, they weren't so accommodating as to do the same for the iPads. Is viewing the length of a word doc and a pdf side by side possible?

The mini 4 is great. It is small however, obvious given the name. But holding it is a pleasure. Split screen works decent enough. In landscape it is quite usable but small. Took me a day to adjust to the smaller fonts but im loving it now.

I find that if I am using it with the keyboard and I have it propped to a decent height I can use it the same way I was using the iPad pro. The multi tasking is not as fast as the pro but that is to be expected. On the other hand ipads with a keyboard attached are quite nice, with all the keyboard shortcuts (the whole line up). The only issue is getting them to a height that does not strain your back.

All of this is subjective of course.

That's interesting to know. I have both the pro and the mini 4. I find (obviously) that the pro is better for web browsing and writing notes, emails etc but I noticed this evening, when waiting for an important email, it was my mini that I picked up, not the pro. Also, just home this evening from a business trip. Took the mini with me (just easier to travel with) and found it adequate in every way. Watched a bit of TV in my hotel room, read my emails in a coffee shop and tucked it easily into my briefcase for the trip home. I might try and take the pro on my next trip but already think the mini will be the better option.

The mini is for sure the best for bringing out and about. Currently typing on it while waiting outside a restaurant using my iPhone 6's hotspot. Never could've done this on my Air. The form factor and weight are great, and the portability is unbeatable. I have more function than my iPhone but in a still nice and portable package.

yea. I just returned the pro because I found it just ended up staying at home even when I didn't have the mini. Now that I have the mini I can't see taking it with me ever. It is a great device but I dont need it.

I'm on a kick to reduce my computer usage and trim down both usage and money invested into systems. Anyways I love the mini 4.

I agree with you but can't and won't get rid of the Pro. I'm lucky enough to be able to keep both. Both lovely devices.

I'm still loving this thing. Lightness is still wonderful, and it is a joy to type on. I did all my usual morning iPad stuff and played some NHL 2k on it this morning and it was great; I didn't find myself missing the bigger screen at all. Also I never thought I'd really notice the extra ppi but it definitely is noticeable and I love the extra sharpness. I could see why the next iPad Air could use a res boost.
The portability of it definitely is awesome, and it seems like once you have a device this portable, you want to take it out more, and certainly more often than I did with my air.

That's a great point. I take my mini 4 out way more often than I ever did when I had bigger iPads. I do miss the big screen sometimes (1% of the time). Otherwise, no regrets at all. It's a great little companion.

Lots of times, my iPhone stays in my pocket and I just fire up the hotspot straight from my mini 4. iOS has really streamlined tethering. Pleasure to use.

Definitely, the tethering is awesome. One of the many benefits of using all Apple products. I think the benefit of portability outweighs the benefit of the larger screen on the Airs

What cases/sleeves do you guys recommend? I've just got this from Kavaj.

I have the Apple silicone case and Smart Cover and frankly really don't like them. Fit and function are perfect, but I don't like the feel and it seems to collect a lot of lint/dust/gunk. How are you liking the Kavaj?

Well I got it this morning! My mini 4:

And comparison to the old Air:

I love the weight of it, SO EASY to hold. A lot easier to type on too. Way more portable. When I pick up the air and use it now, it seems huge; now the decision time comes.....I have till next month to decide whether I will keep it, or get air 2. So far, the experience is quite enjoyable.

The portability is very nice. If you carry it around, the Mini size gets the nod from me.

The Mini 4 is such an improvement in display and sound quality compared to the Mini 2 that for the first time I feel like I'm having a hard time justifying having the Air 2 and a Mini-size iPad. (I had a Mini 2 before, and had no such trouble justifying both then.)

I slip the Mini into the back flap of my SFBags MacBook Pro sleeve. They go everywhere together and for my needs complement each other nicely.

I love it. It's a massive upgrade from their older iPad mini cases. They had the case covering the front bezel that I hated. This new one uses a plastic frame that the mini sits in so the whole mini front is uncovered. Nice quality. I recommend. If you register with them at their website you get a discount voucher to order with Amazon.

iPad Air 2 all the way. It's the new mini. iPad Pro is the full size now. iPhone 6S+ is the iPad Mini with added phone capabilities. I don't see any suitable need for iPad Mini.

I have always had 9.7" iPads, but when I got my wife the original mini, I was always jealous of the portability and form factor. I love the idea of an iPad the size of a large paperback. Awhile back, I decided I didn't need an iPad at all anymore and sold my Air 1.

I was so wrong. I missed having an iPad immediately, so I got myself a mini 3. I have had it for a few weeks now and have fallen in love with it. It is the perfect device for reading and watching shows/movies in bed. I also love having it on my desk during the workday just for the little extra things I might want to do.

I'm not sure I ever want to go to a bigger tablet again. I tried the Pro and it seemed obnoxiously big to me (and unnecessary considering I have 13" rMBP) and I even find the 9.7 models to be big enough sometimes that I think twice about leaving the house with them in certain situations. Not so with the mini--it goes everywhere with me, and even fits in the kangaroo pocket of most of my hoodies.

For ultimate portability, I will always turn to my iPhone/Watch. For heavy lifting I have my rMBP. But for literally everything else, I love this iPad mini--it is my favorite iPad form factor so far.

I totally agree. For total portability I have my iPhone 6 and Apple Watch Sport. For editing for my YouTube channel and storing photos and other files, I have my MacBook Air 13". Like you, everything else I use the iPad mini 4. It really is awesome for everything I want to do on it.

So it's been 5 days with the mini 4 now. I've used my textbooks a lot these past 2 days and it has worked pretty well: however, when I first loaded up one of my books to study, I was a bit surprised at the small size of the text. Of course I can zoom in and it's fine, and I usually read zoomed in (even on the air 1 I did this), but it made me consider the Air 2 just a little bit. I've gotten used to he smaller text size, and I am enjoying the lightness of the mini 4, plus the portability has been great. I need to make a decision on this; I have till January 15th to return with BB. However, they have a good sale going on now that would be good, and they also have a good price on open box units (anyone have experience with BB open box before?), so I'd like to make a decision soon. Decisions, decisions, decisions.....
