I'm torn on what to do. I'm selling my 2.0 umb. I need the backlit keyboard b/c I'm a night dweller, plus of the other little upgrades that comes along with the new 13" mbp. I'm torn on whether to get a new 13" mbp or a rfb 13" 2.4 umb.

thoughts?

The new Macbooks have a slower SATA connection! How awful!

It kind of depends on your needs. Did you find out that you really need firewire? If so, MBP. SD card? Eh, get an adapter.

Another option would be to hold onto your current machine (lighted keyboard or no) and get all the use out of it that you can, or at least until apple upgrades the machines again with the newest proposed hotness from intel.

The other thing I've learned is to NOT rush out and buy the latest product from apple due to their giveth and taketh away upgrades. It's worth it to wait a couple of weeks or a month or so and let everyone else discover flaws and shortcomings on their $1K-2K laptops.

I've got an old, old school friend whose favorite saying is the first mac commandment: "Thou shalt NOT buy a version A." I'm modifying that somewhat: Don't be an apple pioneer. Let the braver and more reckless souls discover the bad water and quicksand.

Get the new 13" MBP.

The slower SATA connection can be rectified via a upgrade as the connection is present inside the computer. SATA is only good if you use ssd anyways, and those are 1-2 years away from being mainstream.

Way better screen, better battery life, sd card slot, firewire, cheaper price in the US.

What reason would you get the 2.4?

well my 2.0 is all but sold and the cost to upgrade is very little for me right now.
The 2.4 is slightly cheaper, and has a removeable battery is why i was thinking of it. the new mbp has better battery life, and if i get a new laptop then i get the free touch after rebate... which I am then going to sell for probably 200 or so craigslist to someone local so they will save $29 +tax since i already have the 16gb and don't have a need for an 8gb.

I'm leaning toward mbp, b/c I'm worried the rfb 2.4 many not have a new screen, but the mbp as mentioned has slow sata speeds...

this is why I'm torn. Either way an update is going to happen...

thanks for the opinions!

this also is weighing heavily on my brain and making my decision that much harder
Seriously, it shouldn't. What's holding you back from buying the new one? Will you get an SSD sometime in the future? Chances are you won't. Besides, chances are that the 1,5Gbps limit will be fixed by a firmware update. Seriously, I would get the MacBook Pro.

(Man, I feel like dirty now! :D)

No it wasn't a factor I was just being sarcastic. I think I am going to get the mbp. I just needed to talk it out I guess

Chris, go to an Apple store and look at an uMB screen and then look at a uMBP screen. You'll pick the uMBP easily over the previous gen just for the screen quality itself.

I wish i could switch mine out

Ive been looking for a buyer for my 13" unibody macbook with 2.4ghz and 250gb hard drive so that I can buy the new MBP but I haven't had much luck. Im gonna see if the apple store will let me switch mine out if I pay the restocking fee. I definitely like the new screen, processor, more ram and the sd slot. Im still 50/50 on the battery as I like having a replaceable one. Everything else doesn't really bother me (firewire).

I wouldn't buy one of the MacBook "Pro" over the unibody system I have now.

As I posted in another thread, I spent a good amount of time playing with the new "Pros" and I'm very unimpressed, considering all the noise thats being made about the new screens. I have one of the original LG screens and, in comparison to the new 13.3" and 15.4" systems I played with, the "upgrade" is being greatly exaggerated. When properly calibrated, the screens look almost exactly the same minus the exception that the new one has the color saturation turned up ever so slightly.

As for the other features..

Firewire? Why? If you're going to redesign the motherboard for new ports, let's take that extra space that Firewire now occupies, take out the mini-DisplayPort, and put in HDMI! Give one regular USB port and one combined USB/eSATA.

Also, why only SD? And is Apple going to be like other PC manufacturers and release a nice flow of firmware updates to keep up with revised SDHC cards and increase compatibility with the higher capacity cards? I doubt it, because we all know how Apple HATES to give away free "new features".

Integrated battery? No thank you. Sure it lasts a tiny bit longer in real world. But I don't want to be tied into taking the system into Apple or sending it away for a replacement. Plus being able to swap out batteries gives me more overall battery life. Look at my HP for instance. With 2 batteries I can push 10 hours of battery life, and thats WITH dedicated graphics and a 15.4" CCFL backlit screen, as well as the older generation Core 2 Duo and more energy hungry DDR2 RAM.

Overall, the new MacBook "Pro" is a big overall downgrade. I also can't help but laugh at the fact that only Apple could get away with selling a $1700 15.4" system with integrated graphics. Do you know how cheap a PC with the same specs as the entry MacBook Pro goes for? About $1,000 less. And good luck finding a 15.4" PC that ships with ONLY 256MB of dedicated video memory for under $800.

May have a point, but the decrease in price makes the lineup a pretty sweet deal if you ask me...
