I was completely prepared to get the 2.6 15" with the 9600gt and instead went with the 13". I have used 15", 17" and other 13" or smaller (vaio t series) notebooks. Really, I can adapt to use any of them just fine. For now, I preferred the slightly increased portability of the 13 over the 15. Since I am going to be very mobile in the near future this played a big part in my decision. I also have a 24" lcd that I can use when at home. Now I just wish they offered the 3ghz cpu and 9600gt in the 13" :)

The day I unboxed the 15", I felt like I had made a mistake. I had grown accustomed to my 13" White MacBook that I immediately regretted the decision, though I needed the dedicated graphics for film editing work.

After less than a week of using the 15", I grew accustomed to it and can no longer stand the small form factor of the 13". The 15" simply "feels right" to me and as of this moment I can say that I have no regrets. It does take use getting to if you're upgrading from a 13", but it's definitely worth it.

I was so moved by this thread last night that I went to the Apple store and purchased a 13" MBP to replace my 15". Have been debating for a while and pulled the trigger last night, now to sell my 15".....

If it helps I've been thinking about this scenario for 2 days after selling my Mac Pro. I needed something powerful, portable, and something I could still game on. I ended up going with a refurb 2.66Ghz 15" MBP. I needed the extra processor power and dedicated graphics card. I think for typical use or for a normal college student a 13" would be fine. The screen didn't play into as much as the extra goodies that can be had by purchasing the 15" over the
13". I'm also dropping in a Corsair 128GB SSD too and Snow Leopard. :)

I returned the 13" MBP and bought the 15" MBP and finally have a good laptop. My first apple laptop was the pismo then the powerbook G4 15" and 12" models. I loved those workhorses!! Then I bought the black macbook and was a little let down with how slow and poorly built it was. I kept it for a year and then bought the new 13" MBP because of these very forums. What a mistake that was. The screen is a mirror and the 9400M is just pathetic at most high end tasks. I knew it was an integrated card but everyone on here talked about never using the 9600GT at all. Be careful of these forums. I have said it many times before, people that post in this forum are often doing so to justify their own purchase not yours. The 15" MBP with the 9600GT is only one pound heavier then the 13" and better in almost every other possible way.

I had the same debate for quite some time. I ended up going with 15" 2.8ghz. I'm a student too, and honestly, I wish the specs I needed came in the 13" package, for it is cute and adorable. But i needed the dedicated graphics card and at least 2.6 ghz for FCP, so I went for the larger of the two.

Honestly, its really not that much more cumbersome to carry around than a 13" notebook. The keyboard on the two models are exactly the same, and if you're not going to be doing any heavy-labor computing or running graphic-intensive applications, then go for the little guy! The only difference you'll be concerned with is the "screen-real-estate-to-portability-factor." If this is not an issue to you, you really can't go wrong! You'll be happy with whatever you may purchase :) happy buying

I assume you also went matte?

I just grabbed a 15" old gen 2.66ghz with the 512mb GPU. I had a play with the 13" as was going to get the higher end model but £40 more I could get the bigger one.

Yes the 13" looks beautiful but I just need the extra power and I have a white 13 macbook. When the next systems refresh next year I will have a hard choice on my hands.

each to there own :)

I'm actually surprised to see a majority of the responses favor the 13" rather than being more balanced. Like many, I debated with between the two and what version, but in the end I went with a refurb late '08 15" with the dedicated graphics. My wife uses a 13" white macbook, which I used on occasion and my work provided a 15" Latitude replaced by a more recent 14" Latitude. I'm also testing out a 17" HP business laptop with 1600x1200 reso. So needless to say, I've tried it all, including a tiny Dell Mini 9.

They all have their pros and cons and it really comes down to your usage. I'm a developer, so screen resolution is important to me and my MBP is mainly for use around the house dev and also video editing. My toddlers are always on the move, so I can't really be tied down to a desktop. The compromise was the 15" but I would've loved the 15" to have 1920x1200 reso or even if a 14" MBP was available with 1440x900 reso like the 15". In addition, I do plan on getting a Apple "tablet" when it comes out, and I figured, I would prefer a bigger screen size difference. I could see the possibility of me replacing a 13" with a tablet (due to size and specs) but couldn't do so with a 15" due to it's size and specs.

So, although I have much respect for the 13", I'll add a +1 for the 15" tally. BTW, my 15" refurb was $1299, which was so close to the 13" prices.

After having my 13" MBP for about a month I've realized I'm going to need more screen real estate for my school work (CS4). So, how do I remedy this? Get an external display of course, going to pick up a 'nothing special' display from Dell or something that will get me through school - worrying about a proper display when I truly need it.
