What we need from Apple:

A bigger Sonos Beam like soundbar, with more HDMI inputs , dts and Dolby HDMI support, and the ability to use 2 homepods as rear speakers in a 5.0 setup.

Would be a nice start. I don’t expect Atmos , but at least dts and Dolby hd. Would give them a legg up vs sonos, Bluesound, Bose systems.

But first: remove the volume limitation of the HomePod when watching movies on the Apple TV .

But what if u force the output of the appleTV to Stereo mode? I think if u send an 5.1 signal to 2 homepods it just wont get all the information it should have, which results in an lower volume. (Just an theorie)

I'm in total agreement but IMHO it will NEEEEVVVVEEERRR happen. I don't think Apple would touch home theater anything.

A little disappointed in the store display of the Homepod (at least here in Canada); non-ideal listening environment, you could only Airplay to set pairs, seemed like the store was using a single Apple Music subscription across all displays so you were constantly having music interrupted as other people at other stations started to play music.

Definitely a missed sales opportunity!

I agree.
They have all the stuff for great room eq I. They could use AR+measure, they could use the iPhone to calibrate the sound, they could even use the Apple Watch for tracking the movements of the user to adjust sound, etc.
But I think Apple doesn’ t Like things to be complicated for the user, and that is a shame. And could be the problem for moving forward.

But please Apple, a soundbar, with Apple TV build-in would be great.

Just ordered a 2nd HomePod

Got a white one for the bedroom. Thought with air play 2 and stereo there as an option will fit in nicely

Yes, I use mine heaps and it's great. There are a few issues with Siri and I want more features, so I'm waiting for a new version before buying.

With Apple's expected event in September soon, I'm holding off buying anything from Apple anyway

In all honesty I wouldn't expect a HomePod revision anytime soon, certainly not this year and most likely not within the next 1-2 years either. The soonest I could see a HomePod v2 happen would be in 2020, similar to how accessories like the AirPods or the Apple Pencil will most likely get their v2 this or next year which is ≥ 2 years after their initial release, but again, that's the soonest possible revision, maybe it just takes even longer than that. The thing is that there's not really anything to improve hardware-wise right now, most of the complaints and criticism are directed towards the software-side of things (and there are some big new features coming this fall in iOS 12).

The only thing that could happen is the rumored "mini-HomePod" under the Beats-brand but that won't replace the HomePod in its current form, it might just be a cheaper alternative with less features and not-so-good sound.
