So excited to play with the Pre all day today. Overall, the buying experience was pretty smooth this morning. So far, I'm impressed with the little device. I wouldn't trade my iPhone in for it... but... I like! Here's my blog post with more detailed impressions. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them!

Just read your review.

Please follow up after a week or two. I'd be interested to see your perception of the device after extended use. I may upgrade from my SERO plan and pick up Pre.

Also, reading around the web, I see an over-the-air update is available (1.0.2). Try updating (via the phone). How is the internal update mechanism?

Woah, man, I hope you get a case for your Pre. From judging from your iPhone, your phones take a beating up.

Heck, when I read this from engadget, it really makes me think deal breaker:

7) Facebook and Google sync well. Not only does it have push Gmail, there's something called Synergy that grabs your Facebook and Google contacts and merges them together on your phone. You may not want ALL your Facebook contacts or everyone you've ever emailed from your Gmail account to be on your phone, but it's all or nothing at this point.

Of course, they will probably fix that or change it.

Well, you could wipe all contacts from your Gmail interface. Turn on Mac Address Book to Gmail syncing, through Address Book preferences. And you'd have 2-way OTA contact syncing between your Mac and Pre, courtesy of Gmail.

ugh I have someone that will sell me a 1st gen iPhone for $100, but I'm afraid it'll be worthless on Monday...?

BUY IT...sell it on eBay for more than double. You can get way more than $100 for it on eBay. Is the phone in decent condition? If so, you can double that $100.

Even after Monday you think I'll be able to get $200?

And I was going to have my friend unlock it for T-Mobile so then it might be worth even more.

haha, I don't even want to look at the pictures, I'll just assume Pre did a good job and everyone can go on with their lives. ( until the next iPhone, which will be madness! )

Took my daughter to Build-a-Bear this morning at the Paramus Park mall in NJ. To my surprise, a little Sprint kiosk had Pres to sell. The salesguy was playing with one when I walked up.

It's smaller and thinner than I had imagined. A nice rounded-edge, flattened front/back pebble shape. Fingerprint magnet, of course. Would've preferred a rubberized back.

Pros: even my six year old figured out very quickly how to launch, choose and exit apps. Gesture area easy as well. It was quick at everything. Web browser was fast and easily the equivalent of Safari.

Keyboard was fine, but I'm a vertical slider keyboard fan anyway. (You don't need autocorrection like you do on a touch keyboard.)

I'm impressed with Sprint's prices. Lowest plan is 450 min for $69, with unlimited text and data... and Sprint navigation and TV included in the price. Considering that you can roam on Verizon's towers, it's a deal here in the northeast.

Cons: screen slightly smaller and darker than I'd hoped. Others are right about the keyboard edge: it is sharper than it needed to be. I wish it had some grooves to help slide the keyboard, although I could see getting used to pressing hard on the screen as suggested.

And no Today screen app (yet), where I can see everything at once. Betcha that's one of the first developed, though.

I'll probably get one for development, and would definitely get a next model with larger screen for myself.

Great read. Thanks.

How does Apple manage to get such long lines? Did people line up for phones before the iphone?

The Facebook all or nothing will take a change from Facebook's API.

Because Apple has a coolness factor associated with it. They also have a huge customer base. Everyone has an iPod, people think Macs are cooler than PCs and their retail stores [especially the 5th Ave store] are cool looking.

Also, the iPhone was revolutionary when it came out with its touch screen.

All of those factors contribute to why the lines are so long. Apple is pretty much a status symbol.

When did Apple develop this coolness factor? Has it always been there? Will they stop being "cool" in the near future?

Like said before. Apple has a big following thats been going on for decades. Sprint, Palm, etc.?? Not so much.

Even the SanDisk CEO said it best..."You cannot out iPod the iPod"
Which can possibly transverse to 'you cannot out iPhone the iPhone' loosely.

And I agree. Its not a wise idea to tryand beat the iPhone in the iPhone arena. Its better to create your own market for your product. Just like Apple did for the iPhone.
