Anyone waiting in line to get the newest competitor (Pre) today? (add pics!)

I've always wondered why Apple has such a large following and it's because they make good products. The Apple haters would have you think they make "overpriced junk". This is not true though because they wouldn't have such a following if they did.

When did Apple develop this coolness factor? Has it always been there? Will they stop being "cool" in the near future?

I think the coolness factor has always been there. I don't think they will stop being "cool" anytime soon.

My gf is quite excited about the Pre so we're going to wait in line now. It's 6:03AM now and we're going to the Emeryville, CA Sprint store. Not sure what to expect in the form of lines. I waited last year for the iPhone 3G @ 6AM and I think I was number 47 in line @ the ATT Store on 34th st in NYC. That store opened @ 9AM. The Sprint store opens at 10AM. I was curious if anyone else is heading out to a store. If so, post your pics / war stories here!

I will snap a few pics of the line / device and post them here when we arrive!

And I know this isn't 100% iPhone related, but... it's the newest iPhone competitor... which makes it related! I'll be updating this post in a half hour or so. Wish me luck!

EDIT: Here's a link to my waiting in line pics / first impressions!

I think its related, it has a "p" in the name, has a feel sort of like iPhone, synchs with Itunes. I call it the iPalm LOL

I agree. The iphone, ipod, itunes, and their stores made them more mainstream. A lot of their competition can't compete with this.

PreCenter was hilarious. Every picture was with people being the first in line. Then i read a little of the thread they had going. It must be pretty depressing thinking you waited in line by yourself, or with only a couple other people.

It was also funny reading how some devices weren't even working right. Sorry, but it's a fail for the Pre.

Apple just knows how to play the game. They have WWDC 2 days right after the launch of the "best iPhone killer yet". People wait in line. The media is all over Apple. Why? Because the iPhone just works and it's different from the rest.

Exactly, but of course there are the people who think Apple customers/fans are stupid and buy featureless overpriced eye candy. People these days.

This is why I believe what they did wasn't smart. All Apple has to do is have Steve introduce the iphone and it's a wrap. The media will be all over it, forget what features it has. It will be all over every TV station and print media and the Palm Pre will just fade away.

I REALLY wouldn't comment on the 'launch failure' of the Pre. I remember what happened when I got my iPhone 3G...Waited in line for six hours when I was third in line because Apple's servers kept failing.

I believe the replacement back casing which comes with the Touchstone is rubberized.

yeah, the ones i played with at the sprint store were sitting on touchstones and had the nice matte backing.
ill be happy when the new iphone has this, it has a nice quality feel to it, and its non slip.

In my town of about 45000, we had ~133 people inline for the original iphone (5:30pm), and I heard their was over 400 people waiting at the mac store 20 mins from my house.

Iphone 3g release in my area... I have no clue I drove past the ATT store and saw alot of people, probably like ~70ish...

Today at the sprint store at ~9:30 am we had 7 people. (drove past)

Yea, but I think people like me trump this and the people that think that way.

I am not an Apple fan to say the least.

I currently see 5 computers where I am sitting in my house.

Don't see a single Apple logo though.

But just TRY to pry this iPhone 3G from my hand and watch what happens. :D

I don't think so....

and the last windows product to get a line was windows 95.... (maybe 98)

xp vista 7 will have no lines...

I know the video game consoles also get lines but they bring out new hardware like every 5 or so years so that's understandable a bit. Did Leopard get lines?

It sucks that the store you were at, be it Apple or AT&T were incompetent. Obviously they had problems, but I was at an AT&T store that had over 100 people in line and all of them were gone probably 3 or 4 hours after the phone went on sale.

Sure it was a mess early on, but the stores were instructed long before 6 hours to alter how they dealt with things and they no longer were activating phones in stores.

Personally I think it is silly to read too much into the first day stuff when it is easy to cherry pick on the pre today and in the Apple twice, for signs of failure.

Lets see if Sprint and Palm are both still in business in 18 months. That will be a good sign if this was a worthwhile venture.

I live in Canada so it was Rogers. We weren't allowed to take the phones and activate them ourselves because we aren't setup like our US counterparts.

I haven't had a chance to play with the Pre as I'm in Canada but it looks like a great phone. I really doubt I'll be buying one but I definitely want to play around with it.

Keep in mind that although there might not be much initial hype for the Pre, if people love the phone and tell their friends and people who go to the store to demo the Pre over the next few weeks and months love the Pre, then the initial hype for a Pre 2.0 could be just as huge as the iPhone3G. I find it interesting that people on here are comparing photos from the iPhone3G launch to the Pre launch. How about ... original iPod launch? Any photos from the original iPod launch?
