Keep in mind that although there might not be much initial hype for the Pre, if people love the phone and tell their friends and people who go to the store to demo the Pre over the next few weeks and months love the Pre, then the initial hype for a Pre 2.0 could be just as huge as the iPhone3G. I find it interesting that people on here are comparing photos from the iPhone3G launch to the Pre launch. How about ... original iPod launch? Any photos from the original iPod launch?

I like how you FAIL to compare the first iPhone to the Pre. Who waits in line for an iPod? lol. The first iPhone launch was a bigger success than the iPhone 3G launch itself.

There will be no other phone or device for a while that has as most hype as the iPhone does. Because not many devices can compare with the perfecting Apple has done with the iPhone. They have been so careful of releasing things that fully work instead of only half working (excluding MobileMe) since the iPhone. That strategy has won them over big time.

Wow, how quickly people forget around here.

My experience with a launch day product of my 3G running 2.0:

-SMS application took forever to open
-Contacts took forever to load
-Phone rebooted several times per day
-Light leak was bad, had to swap hardware
-Safari couldn't do more than a few web pages without crashing.
-Really enjoyed those lockups where my phone would freeze for about two minutes before rebooting.
-Dropped calls galore. It was a lot worse with 2.0 than it was with 2.2.1.
-Where's those push notifications they promised a year ago in 2.0. Oh, oops, 3.0. Better late than never I guess

The 3G launch was a disaster. Seriously, if Apple does any sort of QA at all they knew full well they were releasing an immature firmware, but they went ahead and did it anyway. Why? They're a business. I can't blame them for it, but don't sit there and tell me Apple doesn't release things that aren't buggy because my first few months with the 3G were filled with problems.

I really enjoyed all the Macrumors threads too when Apple released 2.0.1 and 2.0.2. Threads went from "OMG Contacts load faster, no crashes, this is awesome!" to "Wait, this patch didn't fix anything!!" Their first few patches were placebo effect fixes.

Only issues i had were the slow contacts. The SMS app would open, but it would take a couple seconds to load the conversation. Other than that it was decent.

And what is the significance of this, have you ever heard of people lining up to buy the ipod?

Please follow up after a week or two. I'd be interested to see your perception of the device after extended use.
Yep. Will do.
Also, reading around the web, I see an over-the-air update is available (1.0.2). Try updating (via the phone). How is the internal update mechanism?
It worked fine today. I don't notice any differences, though. It took forever. A very slow progress bar, followed by a flashing "Palm" sign - took about ten minutes.
I REALLY wouldn't comment on the 'launch failure' of the Pre. I remember what happened when I got my iPhone 3G...Waited in line for six hours when I was third in line because Apple's servers kept failing.
Yep - I mentioned this in my Pre Review. The iPhone 3G launch was WAY worse! I waited for even longer, they were incredibly slow in processing orders, activation was broken, but it deactivated my old iPhone. So I was phoneless for most of the day. It was awful.
I was one of those in the Windows 95 line at midnight.
Me too :). There were LOTS of people there!
