I was on the fence.

I then saw what is coming to the Ultra 2 in software. It just doesn't make sense to upgrade. Maybe the 4 will add some features that make it worth it.

Here's a wrinkle in the original question...

What if the battery life is at 84% after one year?

That is my predicament. It's not bad, but not good.

Will I get another year out of my Ultra 2 watch?

Wow, 84% after one year? Mine is 15 months old and still at 100%. I have the screen on all the time and I track multiple activities per day. I only charge to 80% though to so maybe that helps?

I'm an idiot.

It's at 100%

I went to Battery Health, and it said 84%. Turns out that was the remaining battery capacity for the day

You have to scroll down further. Found I am at 100% still.

Very sorry for embarrassing myself like this.

Well I guess you don't have to spend any more time thinking about upgrading. Sounds like you have lots of life left still.

My U2 is 2 years old and it has 90% max battery charge. I used it HEAVILY every single day as I ride my bike indoors and outdoors for about 3 to 4 hours every day. The extra 4 hours of battery life, larger screen, Satellite SOS and 5G are the big YES for me to upgrade. I did pre order the Black Titanium but I cancelled and switched it to Natural Titanium after finding out that the bands hardware is different between black and natural and I have LOTS of Ocean Bands with natural titanium hardware. Also, the natural looks like it is more scratch resistant. I'm getting $335 trade in so that's good enough for me.

I'm guessing $450-500. On MR though it's going to be closer to the $400-450 mark. Users here know what products are worth.
the apple trade-in for an Ultra 2 is $335, you'll be very lucky to get $400-$450 imho, esp when Ultra 2 new will go on sale on Amazon very soon for like $200 (at least) off ...

That's what I have gotten in previous years. Trade in values are meaningless. $200 off? Don't recall seeing that. Even on black Friday.

Let me help you with this.

I upgraded from the 1 to the 2 last year, with people on this forum telling me I was crazy.

The 2 is noticeably more powerful. I noticed that when I gave Siri commands, it acted immediately. That's because on the AWU2, all the processing is done in the watch. On the AWU1, all that processing has to go to the cloud first and then back to the watch.

So, you are getting a significant boost in performance from the 1 to the 3

Not so much from the 2 to the 3. In fact, very little in that case.

I have a 3 year old Ultra and am going to upgrade. It doesn't feel terribly exciting overall, but when the Ultra 2 was announced I did like many of those updates it received - Siri on device and tap gestures for example. Updated display with the Ultra 3 makes the entire upgrade feel worthwhile at this point.

I have the ultra 1 and honestly I don’t feel like the AW3 is groundbreaking at all.
If Apple had better trade in deals then I might consider but right now the current AW1 ultra does everything well.

These upgrades rarely have been underwhelming.

Ignore this post. I replied before seeing your subsequent post and can’t delete it for some reason.

I'm upgrading from AWU2 > 3, but besides the battery life and Satellite connectivity there's not really much in it for me.

No reason to upgrade from an U2 to U3 for me. I don't need/use/pay for cellular, and I would never need Satellite as I have my iPhone with me always. And if I am out in the wilderness requiring satellite, I'm way outside my norm and would have much bigger problems to deal with! Battery health on my U2 is still at 100%. I only need to charge once every 2-3 days, sometimes longer. Nothing else seemed like an upgrade.

I think this will be the case for 90% of people

U3 is thinner than U2. By 2.4mm. Might not be much to some, but on a wearable it could be noticeable and welcome

I think the apple spec page has an error.
IF the Ultra 3 were indeed thinner, we would have heard about it as it would mean a different casing. Going from 14.4 to 12 is significant, hence they'd talk about it.
There have been mistakes on the spec page at launch in the past ...
