Simple reason apple wants to save cost and make more profit. They chose to buy the screen that didn't include the aod support.

Your not making any factual sense.

1)
The custom apple oled display that Samsung display manufactures for apple according to apples specification is more expensive and has lower yield rates then the screens Samsung display sells to Samsung mobile.

2)
isn’t and a software feature? What does it have to do with hardware

Judging from your past posts I would sincerely doubt you would get an iPhone X’s or X’s max even if it did have Aod. So what’s your point again?

I have never found always on display very useful. The screen currently wakes up the moment you pick it up so having an always on display wouldn't add much value IMO.

No, there is no advantage to me to have always on screen. In fact more of a disadvantage especially at night.

Very rarely did I get anything out of the always on display though I kept it on all the time. Don't miss it at all.

I wouldn’t complain if the feature came on the next iPhone.. but having an Apple Watch kind of removes my want of having that feature on my iPhone. If anything, I’d rather have it on my Apple Watch.

AOD is nice for people who keep their phone on a desk. You can look over at it without picking it up. It’s a simple convenience.

This discussion follows a pattern of each time a new feature is announced or has the potential of being added to iOS because of new hardware.

1. You've got your casual users that can't fully see the idea through based on how they use their devices.
2. You've got your power users that see benefit to the idea or have experienced it on another platform and want to convince the rest why it's great.

I look forward to the day where hardware is used to it's full potential aside from just efficiency. With the A12, it's coprocessors and OLED, there's no doubt it couldn't handle something like AOD or docking like DEX. But with the majority of users being in category 1, I can see its not a priority for the company.

My work iPhone gets the job done for sure but could benefit much more out of it if it was designed beyond consumption.

I can ask Siri, if I have any notifications from across the room, don’t even have to pick up my device and look at it, if I’m wearing one of my AirPods it’s a bit more private.

That’s if I don’t feel like looking at my Apple Watch or have it on dnd.

Apples ecosystem is seamless.

And both of the options you mentioned includes additional Apple products. That right there is why I doubt we ever get it on iOS because they want to push additional products on all of us. (yes you can ask Siri from across the room without the Airpods, but then it isn't discrete) Your options include two devices to get basically the same function that we could get from just the phone with an AOD.

I get there are other ways to know if you have notifications.. But honestly, having the AOD doesn't hurt anything and can just be another convenience feature/option for those that want it.

It does, bought the AirPods in 2016 and have used them everyday since.

Apple Watch is a great product, didn’t need to buy a series 4 this year, but did because I thought it was a great product. Could of used the series 2 I bought a couple of years ago.

But Both offers much more functionality than aod.

That still doesn’t change the fact that you can still use Siri to ask for notifications and interact with them, without ever having to look at the screen.

Which was what some posters were asking for.

I’m sure this of you really wanted to have a clock should have a stand alone clock for the task... it’s a phone... I want it **** off at night! End of store, if I need to have a clock, then I’ll buy one and put it next to my bed!
How does this make any sense? Lol it's like me saying, if you really wanted to have a camera, you should have a stand alone camera for the task...its a phone... I want it to make calls and text. End of story, if I need to have a camera, then I'll buy one and put it next to my bed. Sigh some Apple users are just...

A good friend of mine has a 7+. No watch or anything else. He’s impossible to get ahold of because he never notices he missed a call or text. Having AOD or even a notification led (Samsung has both) would help out tremendously. You can look over at a galaxy phone and see a blue led (message) green led (missed call) and the AOD shows things like your current song or missed calls/message. How is that not a big deal?

I honestly don’t see the point.

Between the Apple Watch and asking Siri if I have any notifications...what’s the point again?
So what should people who doesn't have an Apple watch do? Ask Siri?

So you believe it is easier and more seamless to ask Siri if you have any notifications / what the time and wait for her response vs looking at your phone screen for 3 seconds?

So it would be ideal for someone at work to ask Siri these questions vs looking at their screen?

It would be ideal for someone to ask Siri in the middle of the night the time vs looking at the screen on a dock?

it would be ideal to ask Siri at a loud bar what notifications you have vs looking at the screen?

Personally I don’t think it is.
Your friend might benefit from an Apple Watch or AirPod, or not, regardless he can just ask siri without them by just asking his phone.

But if he never looks at his phone aod might not be as useful as some make it out to be.

Again I’m just responding to your friends use case.

"Always listening" finally shows up on apple......Nice 4 years later but still nice to HAVE. I bet it as useless before to people here on this forum.

How can anyone say No? The hardware is already there with the OLED screen all they have to do is the software part.

I'm sick and tired of people being apologists for Apple, even when Apple makes mistakes.
The bottom line is apple fans on this site hate any new features/hardwares that shows up on Android first.....
Large displays, fast charging, wireless charging, always listening etc etc etc

If you don’t want to look at your device it’s very simple, “hey Siri do I have any notifications?
That’s about it.

For all other scenarios, AirPods and Apple Watch fits the bill for me and do for a lot of other iPhone and Apple Watch users.

Btw Siri responds within a second, it’s actually quite quick, give it a try and see for yourself...or not.

For me personally AirPods and Apple Watch > aod.

and waste time when siri replies "no notifications" 9 out of 10 times.

Umm it’s been on apple since 2014.

You keep mentioning the watch and airpods. Not everyone has those or have them on all the time. Siri won't be quicker than looking at the screen and waiting for her to read out all apps that has a notification.

It fits the bill for you because you have an Apple watch. Your initial reaction is you don't see the point. I have given you multiple scenarios to show you the point. Yet still you don't see the point?

I guess for non apple watch users they should scream at their phone in a loud bar to ask Siri what their notifications are and lift the phone and put it to their ear so they can hear what she says. Seamless.

I guess he wants people to ask Siri every 30 mins if they have any notifications rather than look on their screens for 3 seconds. Because asking Siri is so much easier and seamless...its like magic.

I don’t believe that’s true.

I have been using fast charging since 2012 or 2013.

I have been using hey Siri and large displays since 2014.

Still don’t have much use for wireless charging, it’s still a great feature.

Even if aod was offered I wouldn’t use it, i don’t hate it as a feature I just don’t need it.

If I pick up my phone, all my notifications are displayed on the home screen or I swipe to triage or swipe to go to widgets.

If I don’t want to interact with my phone I have hey Siri, the Apple Watch or my mac.

Even before the AirPods I was using hey Siri with random Bluetooth headsets. So more of the same for me.

If I mute Siri on my phone I can just say: “hey Siri do I have any notifications and it will display it on my phone without saying anything.

If Siri is muted on the phone she won’t read anything out. She will just display it on the phone.

I keep saying airpods and Apple Watch because a lot of iPhone users actually buy and use it vs android wear.

There are some posters on here that profess to having the desire to switch to android but remain with iOS because of the Apple Watch.

Yes your are quite correct, I stated that “I” don’t see a point and still don’t even with your scenarios. Take my phone out of my breast pocket look at the screen put it away.
It’s that simple.

If I was at a bar I would not leave a £1500 on the table or on the bar, phone is always in my pocket.

But again I could just glance at my watch when I get a notification and not even take my phone out of my pocket, which is what I do.

Yeah I’m the only iPhone user in the world with an apple watch.

You are incorrect.
Hey Siri was introduce in 2014 with the iPhone 6 and iOS 8 not 2015.
