iPhone X Anyone wish we had a Always On Display?

AOD is a great feature. Consumers dont buy iphones for features. They buy them for security, fluidity and the ecosystem. Until sales slow down I dont see apple adding features like this.

The only reason why it is not there in iPhone is just because of pure greed to have more profit. Apple didn't want to pay extra for the additional AOD controller chip for the screen.

Seems @B_mark_R point wasn’t about Apple including the Option of an always on display or not, but more Of the consumers devotion to the iPhone because ecosystem and security, because that’s they value more than just one feature. An always on display isn’t a ‘Make it or break it feature’ for the consumer, its just a convenience factor, but you’re conflating between other values that trump an AOD.

i was really hoping with iOS 12 we’d finally get the Always On Display for the XS/XS Max. With a OLED Display I just can’t see why Apple has yet to even test it in a beta iOS.

I loved it on the Note 8 but idc enough to make it a reason to dislike the phone. Having the screen light up once you pick it up does the same thing pretty much for me

On a galaxy phone a blue led means missed notifications and green means missed call. Apple users have told me they dont want that. I moved past it with a watch.

So you’re suggesting I spend $400 on a watch ? I have one already that works with Android and iPhones and does the job but still . Quite expensive to do that

I say the more options the better. Add a stylus, notification led and aod. For those people like FFR who think they are pointless, don’t utilize them. For those of us who like them, we can enjoy them. Too many people get wrapped up in what THEY want and think that it’s black and white. I think ditching the headphone jack was pointless and upsetting, but loads of apple (and Android) people say it’s ok because THEY don’t use wired headphone or they have Bluetooth headphones. More features are always a good thing, assuming they are done well. The next thing to go will probably be the charging port, and it will be wireless only. People will say “I don’t like plugging in a cord anyways so this is better “, but I prefer as many options as I can have.

That’s laughable.

Apple being the only oem currently offering cutting edge and expensive components such as 7nm processor with a 8core npu, nvme, edge to edge display without forhead or chin, 120hz touch sensing display, the best speakers, 3D facial biometrics, etc. Etc.

But they cheaped out on one component, aod controller chip .

So did Samsung cheap out by going with less expensive components as well?

Quick question mib.

If they iPhone had aod, would you have purchased one over your note 9?

Going by your past post that would be a no.
But I’m being presumptuous...would you?

And I want a slimmer iphone max, preferably under 7.4 mm in depth, sometimes you don’t get what you want.

Buy the device you want and enjoy.

For everyone else, it comes with their Apple Watch. That’s why some here aren’t clamoring for it.

I don’t know if you’re joking around or what. I had the device a wanted, which was a gold max. I had to return it due to bad headaches. AOD is something you can turn on or off. You seem to be someone who has no use for it, so you could turn it off. This isn’t one of those “Android has it so why can’t I?!” arguments. AOD is something very handy. You keep bringing up the Apple Watch. I bought a series 3 lte the day I got my first iPhone, because I knew I needed a way to know immediately when I received a message. Some people either don’t like watches or don’t want to spend $400 on one of them. I appreciate that you’re an Apple super-fan, but you have to admit that an AOD would be all good and zero negative. Those like you who think it’s pointless can turn it off. Those who like it can use it. The max was $1099, so that shows I was willing to buy any phone. The note 9 is probably the biggest competitor to the Max, although I obviously think the max is better. There are a 2 things the Note has that the Max would benefit from in a big way:

Always on display
Notification LED

The max is the best phone out right now, and was voted best display ever. Why should someone have to buy a watch if they want immediate notification when they receive a message or a call? If you keep your phone on a wireless charger on the table and missed a call on your note 9, you will notice a green led on the phone. Get close enough and you’ll see the missed call icon on the AOD. If you miss a call on your Max and it’s on the same wireless charger, you will see nothing. The only way you will know is if you walk over and pick it up. First world problems for sure, but come on. I understood last year that they omitted the AOD, but this is the second year of amoled iPhones. No excuse not to at least offer it. I’m sure you’ll reply that I should go buy a note if I love it so much, but I put my money where my mouth is and bought a max. Some people refuse to find ANY fault in apple and it really confuses me. Everyone says apple releases tech later then android but they perfect it. What are they waiting for? There is nothing more to perfect.

It’s been explained over and over again.
Do you expect the iPhone X’s max to receive an update tomorrow to enable it?

Replace aod with headphone jack, and it’s pretty much the same argument on Both sides.

No. Consumers don’t buy the Apple Watch for one feature-notifications, they buy it for any reason they want to. It’s a an electronic device meant to expand the capabilities of the iPhone and iOS.

It’s ancillary.
I bought it for fitness tracking, Apple Pay, Apple Music and some other expanded features it offers. After owning one i liked other things about it.

Since purchasing the Apple Watch I stopped buying any Swiss Made wrist watches, my collection is now gathering dust, and I’m not the only one.

Actually I’m a Bang and Olufsen super fan, you think apple is expensive, try b&o . but not going to lost that stuff here.

But that’s the thing you don’t have to.

But people that do or already have an Apple Watch, judging from sales, don’t have a need for such a feature.

To them it’s a non-issue, if apple releases the feature, great, if not they don’t really care.
Personally I would never use the feature.

Btw i was one of the few that bought that pseudo laptop that would allow you to bbm from a real keyboard. It was trash, but bought one anyway.

Ps, I wouldn’t advise you to hold your breath for led lights. It’s never going to happen.

The note 9 isn’t competition for the iPhone, not in hardware or sales.

I feel AOD will come eventually, but you’re right. If they ever were going to include a notification led it would have been on the 6/7/8 series. It’s ovviously not a deal breaker, but it makes zero sense to me. Them getting rid of the headphone jack was to boost sales of their wireless headphones, period. They sell the .30 dongle for an obscene profit. Apple is a very greedy company, but they make the best computers and phones, so it is what it is. Everything they do is based on potential profit. You could say the same about most companies, but apple takes penny pinching to a whole new level. No .30 dongle and a 5w charger on fast charging enabled phones is an insult. There is no way around it. They would have been better off not even implementing fast charging than to do it and then reach their hands out and ask for even more money. Fast charge is not a need I have, but it’s still laughable. I’m sure you have heard these same arguments from the android rubes a thousand times, but it’s just a fact apple would probably sell sand to people who live in the desert if they thought they could make money doing it. A .30 dongle, and they removed it from a phone costing upwards of $1499 usd lol.

I do it’s the feature I’d love the most

Leave phone on the slide, just glance and I can see the time/date/missed calls/texts I may have forgot I had at the time

Yup great feature....Had it on my Moto X.....Apple again "baby steps" . Maybe by 2020....

The AOD on the Moto X was way ahead of any others. Pressing on the icon on the AOD would then show more info (the text, the missed call etc) and swipe one way would clear the icon, swipe another would open the app to allow you to reply or whatever.

I miss it so much, but Moto phones went a bit crap. They even have a notch now.

And I want a slimmer iphone max, preferably under 7.4 mm in depth, sometimes you don’t get what you want.

For everyone else, it comes with their Apple Watch. That’s why some here aren’t clamoring for it.

Would you trade battery life for that?

BTW I'm kind of surprised this issue of AoD and LED blinking lights have bubbled up now. For those who are tied to the Apple ecosystem you have nowhere else to go. With monopoly you will not get everything you want.

It may or may not, but that’s up to apple.

Them getting rid of the headphone jack was to boost sales of their wireless headphones, period.

That keeps getting parroted but lacks facts.
If that were the case:

1.Tim would have stockpiled the AirPods so that their wouldn’t be any supply issues. Supply was constrained for nearly two years after launch. Demand caught everybody by surprise even apple.

2.AirPods would have been released before or at least at the same time as the iPhone 7, not a couple of months later.

3, The 7 would not had a headphone to lightning adapter in the box, neither would the 8plus or the x.

Had even one of those things happened I would agree with you. But the fact is I and a lot of other consumers have been using Bluetooth headsets for a long time. Apple version was just superior; iCloud pairing, and battery case.

Sure others had the battery case feature, I’m looking at you Motorola, but they never worked, the headphones, the charging case worked fine.

Answer this question; do you honestly believe if apple released the AirPods with the 6s they wouldn’t have sold the as many?

They sell the .30 dongle for an obscene profit. Apple is a very greedy company, but they make the best computers and phones, so it is what it is.

Do they?
It’s still cheaper then what google charges, you do know the sell their version for 12 dollars vs apples 9. They used to charge 20 dollars at the pixel 2 launch.

Are they a “very reedy” as well? Or do some poster grade google on a curve?

but they make the best computers and phones, so it is what it is. Everything they do is based on potential profit.

You act like as if there is no direct correlation between those two metrics obviously there is.

Hahahahaha, that was funny.

You could say the same about most companies, but apple takes penny pinching to a whole new level. No .30 dongle and a 5w charger on fast charging enabled phones is an insult.

Then your easily insulted by a power brick .

Actually all companies are for profit, apple is just better at it. Atleast their components are always industry leading, components such as the a12 with a neural engine, nvme storage, 3dfacial biometrics, edge to Edge display, no chin and forhead. those don’t come cheap.

Personally I don’t understand anyone that bought n9 over the iPhone X’s. With the n9 you get old components, compared to the iPhone X’s, but hey they give you extra ram a headphone jack, led lights , aod, and a fast charger and a bunch of other freebies.

Even with a 50% discount it still old tech and a dated design.

I personally buy the phone on its merits and not extras in the box.

They would have been better off not even implementing fast charging than to do it and then reach their hands out and ask for even more money. Fast charge is not a need I have, but it’s still laughable.

And there would be a thread on macrumors about it.

Well I think apple is better off not implementing aod but here we are.

You don’t need a power brick in the box to fast charge. MacBook’s, powerbanks iPad power bricks. Etc etc. All fast charge the iPhone.

I have a rav power pd brick with multiple USB ports I bought last year to charge my many devices, or my many iPad power bricks that come free that I never really use. Even my MacBook power brick will fast charge the iPhone. So....
Kinda more of the Same.

Do you want any of mine, I have about 8 or 9 that came free with past iPhones
They are all still in the box, never used one.

I have a couple of sure se846 headphones, bought just bought a lightning cable directly from sure.

Anyway enjoy whatever device you now have.
