AOD and 120 Hz refresh rates are not Pro features. They both should have been included in the IPhone 16/16 Plus models. Apple needs to stop gimping their “lower end” phones. At $800, they both need AOD and 120hz.

Regardless of wether or not you can tell the difference between 60 vs 120 or you don’t use AOD, these are both standard features these days.

Vehicles in Az come with air conditioning. It’s not a “Pro” feature. Leather seats are a ”Pro” feature. 30 years ago, air conditioning was an upgrade. Now, it comes standard.

Apple withholding basic features like these is the kind of thing that is driving me away from Apple products.

they want you to buy the pro phones thats why. it's all a reason to get the consumer to spend more money on the product so they make more. they could easily give the 16 and 16 plus those features but that would take sales away from the pro iphones. apple has been known to intentionally leave out a feature here and there to give you a reason to upgrade or buy the higher model etc perfect example when the series 7 released and got the keyboard but they didn't give that same keyboard to any other watch below it when 3rd party developers was able to give the series 6 a keyboard, which they also in turn conviently removed from the app store a few days before the unvieling of the series 7. tldr its intentional to get you to buy the pro phones and be aware or apples shady practices

I understand why they do it. I’m just saying it’s not a “Pro” feature. It’s pretty bad if Apple has come to the point where, in order to get you to buy the more expensive phone, the defining feature is AOD and 120Hz. To me, that means they are running out of ideas.

That should be obvious seeing the changes between 15 and 16 series lol I mean who asked for or even needed a button specific to the camera?

I think they're terrified that when they bring 120Hz to the base model iPhones their ASP is going to drop significantly, with many more people opting away from the Pro phones. Many people, including myself, consider ProMotion to be the feature that holds them in the Pro line. They need to bring another 'Can't Live Without' feature to the Pro models before they bring ProMotion to the base phones.

I think so. I will probably do the same thing as far as buying an IPhone rather than the Pro model.

Fully agree with OP.

Why is smoother scrolling and less blurring too good for non-pros?

Only pros need to see when they have an important notification on their always-on screen, right?

And df course, only pros deserve to see the time on their phone at night in bedside mode.

Marketing nonsense.

They're not Pro features, but Apple wants to milk it.

When iPhone XS had two rear lenses, the iPhone XR only had one. When iPhone 11 Pro finally got three, iPhone 11 was updated to two lenses.

60Hz is borderline unacceptable today, sort of how single rear lens was borderline unacceptable in 2018.

Apple don't care.

I was going to upgrade from my 11 to the 16 this year, and now I'm not. I want AOD and VRR/120Hz.

However, at some point Apple will still get my money. Either next year (16 Pro on sale, or 17 base if it has AOD) or even this year (15 Pro on sale).

So ... apart from not getting quite so much money from me, or having to wait another year for it, they still get it. They know what they're doing.

the regular iPhones have some of the best displays on the market, lacking 120Hz but otherwise very good color reproduction with low epsilon values etc. I sincerely believe more people prefer a well-calibrated high quality display at 60Hz than the typical 120Hz garbage you get in cheap phones

That's the only reason (AOD) why I had to upgrade from my loved 14+ with the longest battery life to a 16 Pro.

My new EV car needs AOD for the phone to unlock it....

If my EV didn't need AOD then I'd keep the 14+....
Just out of curiosity do you live in a area that gets a lot of snow and gets very cold because that ev won’t be much use to you in the winter

Then don’t buy them. Vote with your wallet.

Lemme guess though; you already bought it?

I don’t care about 120 hz. I don’t care about AOD. If they were to add them to base models I would be disabling them first thing to save battery life. It would mean extra hassle for me when setting up. It would especially piss me off because it would add cost for features I couldn’t care less about. You need 120 hz and AOD there are Pro’s for that. For me base models is “Pro” because it doesn’t have all that extra crap and it’s lighter. I hope they go back to base models with “worse” cameras and remove that hideous camera bump. Also remove Camera Control. Make price little less. Perfect.

What's there to discuss? This has been discussed to death.

Apple wants you to waste more money on Pro Models. I am very clear.. the day Apple includes USB 3.1 and 120 hz in their non-pro models, is the day I will stop buying Pro Models. I give 0 f***s about AOD. Apple knows this very well and that's why Apple will likely stick to "dirt tier" screens on their non-pro models as long as they can.... or at least till they find a feature replacement to make their Pro models more attractive when they finally give 120hz to non-pro models.
Eg. 240hz screens or under display Face-ID and front camera on the pros.

That's the only reason (AOD) why I had to upgrade from my loved 14+ with the longest battery life to a 16 Pro.

You should have kept your 14+ and replaced your EV.

You do know they will raise the price of the non-Pros.

I need to stop reading the forums.

I definitely understand wanting more features for the same price. Personally I don’t fault Apple for dangling a carrot to entice people to spend more. To me, the $200 price difference is easy to justify for something you use every day for years. I’ve always thought the non Pro iPhones are targeted toward folks who don’t know what AOD is or could never tell the difference in refreshing rates.
