The majority of the layoffs will be the result of AOL shifting to more programmatic advertising.

Just what consumers are asking for, right? AOL is taking the necessary steps to become even less relevant.

On the plus side I guess this also means no more AOL CDs spamming my physical mailbox.

"As we look out to 2015, our strategy and decisions will be driven by the following organizing principles," said Armstrong. "Number one, we'll focus our capital allocation resource management and management time against scaled assets and platforms. Two, we will organize our asset portfolio around scaled value and scaled growth assets. Three, we'll simplify everything that can be simplified."

So many words, so little content...

TUAW was Apple focused, at least originally.

9to5 seems more Google/Android/Gadgets to me, which is the same problem IMO that Macworld took on when they integrated with PC World, then subsequently laid off most of their Apple-focused staff (though I still read that site for Chris Breen's insights).

Huh. Other than MacRumors what's left for dedicated Apple news?

Think Secret is gone.
MacBytes is gone.
Macenstein rarely posts and stopped being worth reading a long time ago.
TUAW is shutting down.

AppleInisder
Cult of Mac
O'Grady's PowerPage

though I haven't visited the sites in quite a long time since most of what they have is also reported here. I definitely miss Think Secret

Really a mercy killing IMHO. TUAW was an amazing source of info until AOL took over. Then like all the blogs they bought they turn it into the digital version of fish wrap.

Wait, is Mac user still being published at all; is it just the print edition that was discontinued?

***UPDATE*** Nevermind. It turns out the whole publication is closing down. What a shame.

Thank you!! I HATE business speak. And the only thing worse is art speak.

Nobody seems to have commented that Apple is becoming less interesting. I used to cherish my visits MacRumors but now it's a tedium. The only reason I keep checking back is to see if Apple releases a new monitor to go with the 2013 Mac Pro. But I'm kind of getting bored of that idea as well.

Some new company is going to come along and displace Apple with better products. Sad, but inevitable.

I stopped visiting when it seemed like every 4th post was about a great app we needed to try. Seemed more of a way for them to advertise than anything.

TUAW won't be missed.

If they actually gave away the magazines for Free on iPad with an ad based structure, I would more than likely be a daily consumer of the material.

Check your local library. Mine has a number of publications available to residents at no cost, via Zinio subscriptions. Very similar to checking out e-books, but without time restrictions.

Geez I'm one of those that still visit the site daily for news. Hate to see if go.

Well you can start by simplifying number one and number two.

Tuaw

I used to really enjoy reading TUAW, but about a year ago, I started to see that many of their reviews were shorter and not very well thought out. As much as I do enjoy lengthier reviews, I always appreciated TUAW's ability (back in the days) to highlight their thoughts.

I'm not really surprised by their closing - considering Engadget and TUAW shared articles/news.

I used to really enjoy As the Apple Turns. I thought it was very entertaining.

Macrumors is always my no 1 source for apple related news, and after that there is 9to5mac and appleinsider... I occasionally visit tuaw and imore, Sad to know another blog/publication apple related shutting down.
Same order as me! I'll also occasionally go to imore since many of their articles have good depth of thought put into them and cult of mac if its a slow news day.

Register on MacRumors! This sidebar will go away, and you'll see fewer ads.
