Very happy about the new shadow/highlights function. It's leagues ahead of the old one, an area in which ACR/Lightroom had the upper hand till now.

Does it automatically apply the new shadows/highlights magic to old photos which were edited in previous aperture3 versions using shadows/highlights or must one go through old photos to get the benefit?

If you view a photo that was adjusted with the old method, you still get the old controls, but you will see an upgrade button. Click that to upgrade to the new method. I believe you can batch do this.

The new White Balance control is great!

These have both really improved the Auto Enhance function, (which will do an auto white balance and auto highlights/shadow if it detects it needs to), which can really work some magic now on difficult photos. Definitely worth trying the auto enhance, or just white balance and see what they do for you. I might start automatically applying that preset on import.

Import is much faster now too.

Now they need to add some good noise reduction.

I just bought Aperture 3 yesterday. Is there likely to be any sort of refund available if they update this week at WWDC or in the next few weeks?

Are Apple likely to offer a discounted upgrade?

No need to worry, they just updated it to 3.3 the other day. As a result, an even bigger update (e.g. 4.0) will be a ways off yet.

Niiiice ! :)

I have a question about Snow Leopard, Leopard users. Is there any reason why you haven't upgraded to Lion?

Because
1) I am pretty satisfied with Snow Leopard
2) It ain't broken so there is no need to fix it
3) I did not like (and still do not like) the distribution model. I understand though that I have no option and sooner or later I will have to adapt to it.

I'm at System Version:Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) on my iMac 27"(i7) and 24" iMac, which I've found great Stability, plus got off the "upgrade-itis" every time bandwagon, etc.

However, I might upgrade to 10.7 soon, seems most of the bugs have been worked out.
I do want Aperture 4, so looks like I will do it when that is released, if not sooner.

alright, I've just upgraded to System Version: Mac OS X 10.7.4 (11E53), in process of the various updates.
Looking forward to Aperture 3.3

I had 10.7.4 totally stable in my previous Hackintosh desktop. Never had a KP. So if OS is not stable on Apple hardware, something is likely amiss in the drivers and apps being loaded.

Frustrating waiting...

Frustrating waiting for Aperture 4. Been playing with a demo of LR 4 and enjoying some of the more advanced features and wishing we had them in Aperture. Noise Reduction is one that comes to mind immediately, but there are others. Yet I still love the simpler UI that Aperture has and don't want to switch to LR if Aperture 4 is in the works. Have there been any rumors at all to keep those of considering switching to bide our time and be patient a bit longer?

The name Aperture X suggests a total rewrite of Aperture. Aperture unlike FCP doesnt need a total rewrite unless thats what is required to get it to be as fast or faster than Lightroom.

The 'X' could signify a closer integration with FCP X with DSLRs shoot movies as well. Creation of events within Aperture to use in FCP X...

Ive been watching the Dan Carr tutorials on how to use Photo Mechanic which is all about meta data wrangling. Great application but it does mean you use 2 programs... Maybe with Apple new love for meta data this Photo Mechanic way of working will be implemented into the new release.

----------

Either way I cant wait. Ive been chopping and changing between LR and Aperture for a while Id like to settle down with one or the other. This update will be the decider...

Aperture can definitely use a redesign. Just by looking at it, I feel like I'm working with FCP 7. Lightroom looks cleaner. I want the iPhoto look, but the functionality of Lightroom and the organization of Aperture on Aperture X.

When Lightroom 4 came out, I decided to get to know it better, rather than the brief trial I gave Lightroom 3. To truly get an appreciation, you can't just try it out, be confused by the differences and annoyed at different shortcuts, and decide it isn't as good. So I went exclusively LR4 until the other week, when I decided to use Aperture 3 again to see what the v3.3 update brought.
I realised how much I missed working in it over LR, I just enjoy using it more, the Metadata management (sorry; 'info'), the Autoenhance features that actually work well, and not having the Modules methodology to deal with. No, it doesn't have the noise reduction, lens correction or automatic conversion to DNG on import of Canon's RAW, but I can do work around the latter two in the select finals by editing externally, and I was in the habit of importing using Apple's Image Capture and using Adobe's DNG converter anyway. So be it.
I don't hold much hope for DNG import in Aperture 4, seeing as it's really Adobe's baby and their converter is the gold standard. The other two I fully expect will be addressed, and given how they have forsaken going up against LR4 near its launch, I fully expect a major overhaul akin to FCPX. Adobe has the clear advantage of years of Photoshop development with tons of expertise and graphics frameworks to draw on. So here's hoping it will be out soon at a similar price and addresses al of our concerns (though you will never please everybody, especially if it is a radical departure). I want to stay on Aperture, most of my images are in it, as are some photobooks.

I have Aperture on my list of things to buy. I was (am) ok with waiting till 4 - I am currently using an older version of iViewMedia Pro.

I'm running 10.6.8 on a late 2008 aluminum MB. I plan on upgrading to ML - it's likely the last OS upgrade this machine can take.

It hit me the other day that perhaps Aperture 4 may not even run on this machine as it's almost 4 years old.

Is there a chance Apple will keep 3 around or should I just bite the bullet now and upgrade later if I can? Now that everything has gone to downloads instead of physical media, I'm afraid prior versions will be more difficult to find.

Thoughts?

Ah well seems I am already out of luck till upgrading to ML - that's what the current version requires and as I suspected, there are no older versions to download!

The current version in MAS requires 10.7.4 which is Lion, not ML.

Personally, i think LR4 is so far ahead of Aperture 3 that i doubt Aperture 4 can even touch LR4, let alone LR5 whenever it comes out. Like i said, maybe it's just me, but i can't get anything close to the same results with Aperture that i can with Lightroom.
