The current version in MAS requires 10.7.4 which is Lion, not ML.

I forgot! I am at SL and was planning on skipping Lion, so in my head I was only one OS behind.

As for LR I downloaded a trial and didn't like it. Unfortunately I missed the Aperture trail window so I wasn't able to compare them. Who knows, I may not like Aperture either. All I know is that I am limited with iView Media. I don't even know if it will work in ML and who knows how long my G4 will keep going.

Personally, i think LR4 is so far ahead of Aperture 3 that i doubt Aperture 4 can even touch LR4, let alone LR5 whenever it comes out. Like i said, maybe it's just me, but i can't get anything close to the same results with Aperture that i can with Lightroom.

Interesting. I can and do get great results with both applications but I've used them both a lot over the years so know them each pretty well. I find that LR 4 is excellent but wouldn't say that it's "so far ahead" of Aperture. I'd love to see lens corrections in the app itself and a few other tweaks, but I tend to do that work in my other RAW apps (DxO, ASP, etc). Other than that, all of my main plugins (Nik, OnOne, etc) work in both and really, Aperture 3.3 was a great update in-and-of-itself.

Really? Please be specific with pics and screenshots. I would love to see the specifics of your Aperture 4 vs LR5 comparison.

Yes, it was.

I don't really have any of my Aperture edits anymore. Moved all my edits to LR4 and got rid of the Aperture files. I don't know, really. Aperture just gave me over processed or grainy images a lot of times while LR4 is buttery smooth. and clean. I don't really feel like i over processed anything. The Aperture files just looked bad. It also felt (to me, at least) that Aperture didn't give a strong enough effect sometimes, even when maxed out. Like i said, maybe it's just that i learned LR4 a lot quicker and easier than i did Aperture, even though i spent far more time in Aperture.

I switched from AP to LR a while ago, mainly because I found the editing tools more useful for my needs. Since then I've discovered the Nik Suite, and don't really do anything but basic global adjustments in LR.

I've never really been able to see a major difference in the RAW processing engines, so the only real advantages of LR for me are lens corrections/profiles and better file management (i.e. renaming files, syncing directories for changes, etc). If either of these are in AP4 I'll look seriously at switching back.

I don't really plan in editing in there much.

I use iView Media for cataloging and it's great to do an "open in" whatever app I need to go to.

I really want to get more into tagging. In the past with iView I was dumping everything into one catalog but I'd then drag like items into a new catalog and save that one with a specific name. I don't even know if the version I have will tag. I'm just worried about it going bye-bye. I have the main catalogs on my G4 (which is almost 10 yrs old) but I also run it on my 2008 MB which I plan on upgrading to ML in a couple of months.

Because I need Illy for my business and I don't "need" PS, I am going to upgrade Illy and buy Pixelmator for editing, I just can't afford Illy & PS anymore.

But I really want to do more photo organizing.

Hmm, looks like Aperture 3.4 is coming before Aperture 4 :(

I was reading about PhotoStream at http://www.apple.com/uk/icloud/setup/mac.html and in step 3 it says:

Shared Photo Streams require iPhoto 9.4, Aperture 3.4 and OS X v 10.8.2 or later.

Of course, Aperture 4 would still be 3.4 or later, but it suggests that 3.4 is in the pipeline, especially as iOS6 and OS X 10.8.2 have just been released today - maybe Aperture 3.4 is coming today too?

EDIT Yep, 3.4 (and iPhoto 9.4) have just appeared.

Hmm, not too soon. I've noticed more beach balls in Aperture since Mountain Lion. Maybe, this upgrade will help. I wonder what if any effect Google's gobble up of NIK will have on future Aperture development/releases...probably not much.

Me too, especially when quitting. It updates previews for sharing, then hangs. Shows as Not Responding in Activity Manager and need to Force Quit.

Hopefully 3.4 addresses this!

I don't see this reference to 3.4. When I go to the page, it references 3.2. Perhaps they caught their mistake already and have updated the web page?

edit: ah! I see it now.

RAW capability not updated in the last update? WTF....

I bought a RX100 a while back since it can shoot raw an they still haven't delivered support for it.

COME ON!

The current release version of Lightroom is also missing RAW support for the RX-100, although they are working on it. My guess is that this is high on the Aperture team's priority list as well.
