I've recently trailed some NIK plugin's for Aperture and they are breathing new life into it for me.

Their Dfine noise reduction is amazing and that's solved one of the big shortcomings with Aperture. Their Viveza tool also goes a long ways to making brush like work much simpler and easier with their control points. I really like it as well for enhancing skies or bringing out detail in some surfaces.

The only thing I'm missing is a lens correction adjustment... my new 24-105 has some bizarre distortions I'd like to correct some times.

It's a big additional outlay of cash so we'll see how motivated I am when the trials are done... however, it's a sign that there's money on the table for a nice Aperture upgrade... if one ever comes along!

With rumors of the new iMacs and/or macbooks having hi-res displays, my guess is they are awaiting the release of them / 10.8 to release Aperture 4.

My thoughts are they don't want to release it and have people wonder why it's hi-res capable - basically telling everyone hi-res is coming soon. So I would expect it to be released when they unveil the new macs.

That would make sense... I just hope the only update to Aperture is not simply high-res compatibility :)

True - but photo editing on a 5120x2880 27-inch iMac would be insane. I could almost see my 5dMII photos in full res glory.

Regardless I think we should hopefully hear something at WWDC.

I don't understand why anyone of you guys are waiting for Aperture 4. Photoshop and Lightroom is more or less the industry standard. Lightroom 4 is very well received and I think it's a nice upgrade from LR3. I see no reason why anyone would want to wait to see what Aperture 4 have in stock when LR4 is such a competent solution. Of course if you've spent years with Aperture, then I can understand why it'll be difficult to switch. I suppose if Adobe made some sort of conversion utility, it'll make some people's lives easier.

Some people simply prefer Aperture's workflow better.

I purchased the Topaz Bundle about a month ago and really like it. It fills in the gaps at times and greatly when a few friends bring over their noisy jpegs ;)

Give their tools a try as well and look around for a deep discount from one of the Canon forums. I got 40% off the bundle by being in Nikonians which made the purchase to good to pass on.

I will say and if someone else can help along the way, printing from Aperture 3 is really terrible. Not everyone needs to print but for my photos and my artwork that I print, I just can't stand it. A2 was better and I was even using the trials of Lightroom with printing ease.
Though to be fair I just bought a sample pack of Hahnemule and I think it's Lion, however it won't let me install the ICC Profiles so that also makes using any print function in any program seem that much worse

I also have the topaz bundle and like it very much. I think their DeNoise plugin is better then the noise Ninja. I haven't used any of the Nik plugins so I can't compare Topaz against Nik but I'm happy with what I have.

While I welcome Aperture update (pretty major for a point release), it makes me think that 4.0 is further away than I anticipated. Anyway, anyone know when Apple is releasing the update?

My guess is that the Aperture update will be released along with Mountain Lion next month.

EDIT: 3.3 is out now... in the App store... Seems like a significant update!

I like this...
- Highlights & Shadows tool has been updated to deliver higher-quality results and work with extended range data

This is looking disappointing...

The Aperture page on Apple.com was just updated. It does show an update to Aperture is coming (likely any minute now) but does NOT say "4" while the branding for "3" was removed.. The update appears to add a few features such as:
-Retina support
-Unified iPhoto/Aperture library
-Advanced wb
-Improved highlights/shadows
-Auto enhance
-Fast browsing.

Not sure if this will be A4 we've been waiting for or 3.3. Since the branding for "3" was removed and was not replaced by "4" then to me this seems like a point release.

Update: I no sooner post this and 3.3 is now live. Similar to www.apple.com/aperture the version number has been removed. It's now just "Aperture".

So from the keynote it sounds like they are working on Aperture 4/X. Would be surprised if it came out this year though.

This looks promising.

I'm quite new to using the app store - I can't see if there is anywhere listed how big this update is - is it the whole app? If so I'll have to go to a friend's house for faster net...

Has anyone who has downloaded it found any improvement in speed? - I have 8gb ram and often find it bogging down and being slow... Curious if any change.

Must also give big thumbs up to apple on one point - I had downloaded it to my macbook when it first came out under my old iTunes account - when iCloud arrived i found i could get my name @me.com and liked the idea of a fresh start. I assumed that i would not get updates unless i signed in with my old account and was happy with that assuming i would download aperture 4 with new account but that isn't the case - the little red number 1 is there even though i am signed in with my new account - it obviously checks what's on your computer irrespective of account. Nice touch that.

I suppose it was always going to be likely - I had bought iWork on CD so it would be bad to not get updates but still has made me happy!

Update was around 500 megabytes for me. Have lost some of the colors in the interface, but it's extremely zippy, very reactive. Opening my 10 000 shot library is near instant... Recently I had found Aperture to be slowing down (even though I have everything on an SSD with the machine specs in my signature), and it even crashed last week...

Just watched the keynote, I'm torn as to whether to buy A3 now or wait for A4 which could still be a while away.

Apple's shown they're still committed with this update, whether that's enough commitment to warrant holding off on a major release for a while is the issue making my decision difficult.

They made it more Cocoa like thus the color loss. It does seem a bit zippier. My app resides on an SSD while my lib sits on a 2TB Thunderbolt drive. No problems at all. So far, I am holding off moving to Lightroom. Apple has given me a bit of hope once again.

"Aperture [3.3] can't be installed on MacBook HD because Mac OS X version 10.7.4 or later is required."

No Snow Leopard :(

Cheers, thanks for the response guys.

I like the Apple way of doing things and I am trying to talk myself out of switching to LR4 and this helps lol.

I have a question about Snow Leopard, Leopard users. Is there any reason why you haven't upgraded to Lion?

Stability; legacy Rosetta apps.

Looks like I'll be re-visiting this dilemma though, if not now, then for Aperture 4. Or a new MacBook Pro
