I had to re-download, Not going to lie the "Goodbye Apollo" wallpaper looks very good. 😭
Yeah, not far ago I have seen Tweetbot on one of old devices I used… that’s nice way of saying goodbye- very cute and sad icon on the same time:

Sleep well Apollo… days of free API are gone :/

I suspect Christian and Steve can’t make it up anymore over the app itself.
But have they considered a joint venture on Reddit PR? Christian is a absolute master at it while Steve is not. With Christian onboard, Reddit might pocket some donations before their IPO!

This is a lie holy moly. How are people this misinformed ? Apps don’t make themselves.

Apollo still took A LOT of work to make, arguably more than the official Reddit app did considering how lacklustre it is.

holy moly you failed to understand what I said. re-read "without paying a dime to Reddit."

you can spend $1 million building your own reddit client and the above statement is still true.

Clearly an iOS developer without morals.

I’m one too and even I’m not so ignorant I can’t see Reddit is still in the wrong here.

You didn't really argue against my points and instead just said "nah, reddit BAD".

Clearly no point in continuing this conversation with you. Have a good one.

Second: the cost to run an API is nowhere near what you think it is. Source: I work for a major IT company and am a developer involved in our API.

Source: I've worked at Apple and several startups as a full stack engineer developing several APIs for mobile and desktop clients using Azure/Google Cloud/AWS/Cloudflare. Now what? LOL

Third: Plenty of other companies charge for public APIs at nowhere near the rate Reddit is charging.

1. Twitter charges more.
2. You failed to provide any examples which just leads me to conclude you're comparing against something that isn't even remotely similar to Reddit.
3. I'm not correlating the API costs to exclusively server bills. Obviously AI startups are hungry for data to train on. The market has spoken: data is valuable which raises the prices. But even subtract this premium, Reddit's bill to run the API is still a money blackhole considering third party clients don't show ads.

Fourth: The CEO has admitted this isn’t about covering costs but about blocking 3rd party apps. They were just to chicken **** to say

Again, not the argument. API costs have an AI premium. Subtract that, it's still expensive to develop and maintain which is my argument. And you're simply putting words in the CEO's mouth if you're arguing "they were just too chicken to say it". Clearly you're not going to change your mind about this so there's no point in continuing this convo with you. Have a good one.

Jeez the comments here. People are clearly out of the loop with everything that has happened specifically with Christian (Apollo) and reddit.

Reddit lied and tried to destroy Apollo/Christian's image, but Christian kept the receipts from his phone calls and talks with Reddit. He was fine with paying reddit, just not $20 MILLION A YEAR for the API (oh and you only have 30 days to make this happen).

It's a bit surprising to see so many people piling on this developer. In the last month he found out his primary revenue stream was going to be cut off imminently, and then the CEO of Reddit posts libelous attacks on him (discredited by the recordings shared by Christian). Now, he's essentially saying to the app users "You can have your money back or not" and somehow he's a jerk?
It's a psychology thing. People in general have a very hard time feeling anything but envy toward the successful and rich, and that gets expressed through mean-spirit acts. It's unfair and sad, but just how it is.

The mods weren’t breaking any rules. Nice try.
If I’m wrong prove it. Cite the rules they were breaking. Or are you saying making private subreddits, a feature Reddit has included for years now is somehow against the rules?

I mean we know they lied. That alones mean they are wrong about something. Unless you think lying isn’t wrong.

Yes they were. Mods are expected to keep communities open, and they were warned to do so. When some switched their subreddits to NSFW as a method of protest, effectively removing advertising for those subreddits, some were removed.

As the developer, I just want to say, I don't think you're a bad person or anything if you take the refund, but I do really appreciate the folks who are kind in declining it.

For reference, 30 days ago Reddit was still being very promising with their claims for the API pricing to be equitable and based in reality, and 4 months before that Reddit told me they had no plans to change the API this year, so this level of refund really hit me out of nowhere.

It's a gut punch, and I loved building Apollo, but the kindness and support people have shown over the last few weeks really means a lot in making this easier to swallow, so I genuinely really do appreciate those folks considering declining the refund.
What are you plans moving forward, are you working on any other Applications?

You’re out of line. Are you the Reddit ceo?!?
I think it’s hilarious. I can’t wait for July 1st when everyone leaves.
No, it's because things were about to get hard. Previously it was easy, access to reddit's API was free, and he'd hide ads. You could use Apollo for free, or you could pay a flat fee and it went directly to him.

Now, with reddit's API pricing, he can't just charge a one size fits all price, because it varies from user to user, based on how many API calls they're making. Billing users at the end of the month probably isn't a great option here, so he'd have to estimate monthly costs based on paying users, average the cost out, markup for himself, and then set high prices of things. We'd see really fast how much people really love Apollo.

He threw in towel.
somehow Narwhal is making a work.

You all got scammed by a millionaire.

Call me unsympathetic but this pity party is pathetic. "The refund is out of pocket", is actually a massive lie. A refund is simply returning funds you collected, I do not care that you spent the money. Personally I call it a big scam taking advantage of the "hate on reddit policy" and "kindness of people". Do not fall for it folks, actively tell this developer to go F himself for even asking. Give your money to a real charity, you owe this stranger nothing. He entered into a business and knew the risks getting in! He also likely enjoyed some very nice reward while the going was good, pathetic is my polite word, don't reward stupid.
Agree 100%. This is ridiculous.

Apollo should make a reddit clone, I know many people would would jump ship to their platform. Let Reddit go the way of Digg for being greedy!
Apollo is currently begging people not to get a pro rated refund for services he can not provide. He certainly can not just create another Reddit LOL

Reddit has been profiting off the hard work of Redditors and Mods without paying any of us a dime.

Perhaps Reddit should add a pay the users button to their own paychecks.

Reddit isn't profitable.

Also, this is how social networks work. If you aren't paying for the product, you ARE the product.

I like how the average reddit poster is considered a “content creator” by some in this thread :D

Macrumors should pay us because we are content creators here! 😂

Man everyone is all over this distraction instead of looking what’s actually happening to Reddit.

Still waiting for the improved Reddit app that has the mod tools and everything else that pushed people to third party apps. Spoiler: it’s not coming. That would require Reddit to spend money I guarantee they won’t spend. They are not going to spend an extra dime they are pumping up numbers heading into going public. They know for every smart person saying goodbye there is a abundance of clueless people padding their pockets.

Beyond better Mod tools why did people go third party? The official Reddit app censors itself. Anything deemed NSFW whether that be adult, graphic, or just not currently in favor of society is crippled in the native app. You can spend hours trying to turn off safe mode but at the end of the day you discover that there’s no sound in a video because the app strips the audio. You have to click through warnings on every post unless you publicly join the subreddit.

Now why? Well let’s look at the whole situation. Why do advertising companies hate Apple? Simple Apple has taken a stronger stance than most on data mining. Granted you still get data you just don’t get to know exactly what an identifiable person is doing you get more sanitized data.

Now Reddit didn’t shut its API down it just made a super high cost to use it. Yeah fight me I also work in this field the price is high for what you get that argument is old. More importantly and overlooked is what you get. This isn’t charging for the current API it’s charging for a new API that guess what? It strips that sensitive content out. What was one of the reason third party apps were popular? Oh yeah it was being able to see all of Reddit uncensored.

Now let’s look at why the API changed. Reddit said any sensitive content will be blocked on the API. What’s the reason? The same canned spyware response any shady spy operation says. Think of the children. We are protecting people.

Remember the native app blocks this content. Why does the native app do this? Well they want you to view Reddit from a browser window. Unlike mobile apps that try to sanitize data web browsers are a treasure trove. They want to know exactly what you are accessing where you are accessing it and from what device you are accessing it from.

So after all the dust settles what was Reddits goal? They are going full Facebook spy mode. They are making lists and tracking anyone who looks at anything sensitive on the site. Yes that’s what they are doing they flat out said it in the context of protecting people. I am sure once they go public and Uncle Sam wants full access to all that lovely data they can save for a rainy day won’t bite people who trust Reddit so much.

I’m not going to tell anyone to leave Reddit. I’m just going to tell you that you should keep in mind that anything you view on Reddit should be something you are ok with the world knowing.

Enjoy the memes and cat pictures. But know if you click that controversial post you are on a list. As to how that list will be used will likely never be public but it will affect you sooner or later. This is how Reddit is going to make the big bucks. Are you going to help them become richer than they already are?

They realized personal information and having leverage against users is incredibly more profitable than just advertising. Everything happening right now has the end goal of gathering and holding that data. That’s what Reddit is doing while people cry about losing third party apps. Reddit knows exactly what they are doing and they love all this hate and controversy. It’s a distraction.

I still don't understand what the guy is paying out of pocket with 250k. He charged his users the 250k, he should just refund them now that service is no longer available.
What I don't get is why Apple is letting people sell "lifetime" subscriptions to anything, when nothing in the app space can ever possibly last a "lifetime"

If he'd gotten hit by a car, would his estate suddenly owe $250k?

How would he even "complete" such a contract? Live longer than all his customers? Make sure that Reddit never goes bust? Make sure Apple is still making iPhones in 2050?

Apple needs to ban lifetime subs, or make them incredibly clear that they're for the lifetime of the app which could disappear tomorrow so buyer beware.

There’s nothing wrong with charging for an API. Reddit would be insane not to. The way these changes were enacted seem strange.
Reddit is almost like a Wikipedia of “what random people think about almost any subject you can think of.” But it’s the users who create the content that is so valuable. Seems like Reddit would profit more off of being more collaborative with these other folks and finding ways to offer their services that benefit both, but they know their business best, I suppose.

Still, it all seems a bit unnecessary.

Do people not automatically know its for the lifetime of app itself? I don't even know why hes giving refunds in the first place.

Go to Google graveyard and tell me how many of those products Google handed out full refunds. Yes they did give some but anytime you buy anything that relies on something else or a hosted API its for the lifetime of the device/service.

Reminds me of the Trillian days. I don't know how many times I bought a "lifetime" license.

I bought a lifetime license to Plex I don't expect it to be around forever.
