As the developer, I just want to say, I don't think you're a bad person or anything if you take the refund, but I do really appreciate the folks who are kind in declining it.

For reference, 30 days ago Reddit was still being very promising with their claims for the API pricing to be equitable and based in reality, and 4 months before that Reddit told me they had no plans to change the API this year, so this level of refund really hit me out of nowhere.

It's a gut punch, and I loved building Apollo, but the kindness and support people have shown over the last few weeks really means a lot in making this easier to swallow, so I genuinely really do appreciate those folks considering declining the refund.
The Reddit experience won't be the same without Apollo, and I suspect my use will decline significantly as I refuse to use their official app and will simply browse through Safari with as many extensions as possible to remove ads and deprive them of any advertising revenue. Thanks for creating such a simple and great experience with Apollo.

I have read all these threads about Apollo and how terrible the Reddit app is. Apollo must be mind blowing because the Reddit app already works fine for me as a mostly passive Reddit consumer.

Wish they could have found an affiliate program that works. But more glad that the subreddits I read got over their boycott and got back to normal.

It's a bit surprising to see so many people piling on this developer. In the last month he found out his primary revenue stream was going to be cut off imminently, and then the CEO of Reddit posts libelous attacks on him (discredited by the recordings shared by Christian). Now, he's essentially saying to the app users "You can have your money back or not" and somehow he's a jerk?
Yes he is a jerk, he is grifting. He has made lots of money and should have saved up to be prepared for this very real risk. He should have diversified his revenue streams (probably did but he isn't telling you about that part now is he?). He also isnt publishing how much money he made in the meantime enjoying the "rewards" of his business venture. He is literally playing on your reactionary emotions. Why not go in to your local food bank and ask if anyone there is a failed entrepreneur, guarantee you will learn a thing or two.

It was pretty good. I think people of overdoing it a little, it was still just a Reddit app, but it was leagues ahead of the first-party option in a lot of ways that made it more usable and enjoyable.

I demand a refund. I paid $20 for my lifetime /s

You're free to give Christian money at any time. No one's stopping you. Yet here we are with this decline refund button.

Now what?
You were the one complaining that Reddit wasn't getting paid, and apparently frothing with rage that he put in a button that some of his users literally asked him to provide. I don't get why you're so upset that some people might want to support a person whose work they enjoyed.

which he's been profiting off of the hard work Reddit put in without paying a dime to Reddit.

perhaps there should be a button instead of cancelling a refund, it should be donated to reddit.

Reddit has been supported by free labour since its inception. Without user generated content and volunteer moderators working what can amount to a second job for free, Reddit would be nothing. The developer's agreed with the sentiment that they should pay for access to Reddit's API. What they can't do is continue operations due to the exceptionally high price and timeline imposed on them.

I can't imagine following this whole thing and concluding that Reddit is somehow the harmed party here. I'd need to be paid to hold that opinion, why are you doing it for free?

Can you blame Reddit for saying "yah umm.... you are profiting off our intellectual property, so um like we are stopping that". ? It is entirely legitimate stance & frankly every rationale person in this room would have done the same.

I am genuinely mad this developer "thinks" he deserves some form of charity, which he is going to stuff into his fat pockets. Sounds like he has made a lot of money over the years.
I like your stance. That said, Apple should charge double for all their products, because they're a business and should suck every penny it can from consumers.

You're on board with that, right?

So you are proving your absolute ignorance to how business works. You really need to go back and think about what you said. Here is a hint, supply and demand dictate pricing. Please please please let us know when you get that figured out.

"free labour" MY LORD. The users voluntarily posting their content, and the moderators volunteering their time moderating is not free labour. Nobody was forced to do anything. You are clearly stretching the truth to protect your whiny narrative. Business is business, the consumer votes, Reddit did nothing wrong.

Call me unsympathetic but this pity party is pathetic. "The refund is out of pocket", is actually a massive lie. A refund is simply returning funds you collected, I do not care that you spent the money. Personally I call it a big scam taking advantage of the "hate on reddit policy" and "kindness of people". Do not fall for it folks, actively tell this developer to go F himself for even asking. Give your money to a real charity, you owe this stranger nothing. He entered into a business and knew the risks getting in! He also likely enjoyed some very nice reward while the going was good, pathetic is my polite word, don't reward stupid.

You are entitled to your own opinion, and are we, as well as how we choose to spend our money. I have splurged on way worse.

I have no refund to decline since I pay a one time fee upfront years ago, and I have also made one final donation for the wallpapers. The one where the Apollo avatar is chilling with the Tweetbot and Twitterific icons just hits me. 🥲

And my current wallpaper.

RIP, Apollo. 🫡

And what does Christian stealing services have to do with me paying money to Reddit? Christian doesn't deserve the refund but rather should be backpaying the services he used.

and apparently frothing with rage

Hilarious. You want to have your dramatic underdog story so bad, you're willing to distort your own reality with these exaggerations. I stopped reading there. Have a good one.

You don't get it. Had those moderators quit, there would GLADLY be someone to take over control of these subreddits FOR FREE.

Moderators don't deserve $ payment. If they didn't want to put in the work, don't do it and someone would happily be in control of million+ follower subreddits.

Turning the tables: I'd be paid to hold the opinion of Christian deserving everything he's asking for. Why are you doing it for free?

What a weird argument.

Where was anything stolen? If you're talking about the API that Reddit freely provided and benefited from devs using then you're going to have to look up what stealing means.

So why make a big hyperbole of our otherwise valid and thoughtful criticisms? There is no rage here, just simple cold hard facts about a grifter grifting. Sorry I know you do not agree but I have a good point and you know it.

Because your criticisms are neither valid nor thoughtful. People asked him for the option to decline their refund, so he offered it and told people that they're fully entitled to claim theirs if they want to, and somehow you've twisted and contorted that into a grift. Maybe you're not familiar with what the word means? Either way, you're clearly pretty grumpy about it and I think that's funny.

You are entitled to your opinion but no, you do not have a good point. After actually spending time looking at both sides, reading articles from both sides, I very much disagree with your conclusions. I can't imagine any sane person agreeing with the Reddit CEO.
