Hmm. The breaks in the case are very un-Apple.

I really doubt they'd be there in a final product. We do have to bear in mind that if this is true (and I'm kinda leaning towards it being the case at this point) it IS a prototype and you don't bother engineering a perfect chassis for a prototype.

I'm just glad I JUST sold my iPhone 3GS yesterday for top-dollar. I'm in withdrawal now, but after seeing this, I'll be okay. :)

Front-facing camera? Chatrou... I mean, iChat, here we come!

Has anyone thought of the possibility that some geek, who had nothing better to do made this thing himself and is now posing it as the next gen iphone? Um no, not judging from the comments I have read. It's also quit possible the same geek took pictures of the thing and released them to appear as though it was some sort of leak. Quit funny that it can't power up...maybe that's because it's a fraud. Can't help but to have my doubts.

I think its going to look great. I wonder how quickly the person who dropped it got fired, Steve Jobs is going to be pretty pretty mad.

I can't see this been a mistake, its just way to convent considering apple reputation for secrecy. But it could be a first gen phone as they where working on it, still the buttons on the side for volume just go against what apple has done up to now even with the ipad.

So the final product is probably going to be much more different than this.

Still the spec are sweet.

If it's a prototype, then the buttons could simply be something they had sitting in the lab, and not representative of what the actual shipping product's buttons would look like. Actually, the same could be said for pretty much anything to do with the outer shell. Crudely made, not finalized, maybe even intentionally different to make it easier for testing.

And I like the conspiracy theory talk. Maybe Apple intentionally took a prototype, wiped its firmware, and then "accidentally" left it in a bar, knowing full well that the rumour sites would get their hands on it...

Woopwoop!

Yes!!!!Yes! & Yes!

As I've said before its taken Apple 4 attempts to get it right and by looking at this its certainly better looking than any of the previous gens. I like it a lot, some people wont. That can be said for the 3Gs. Personally it lacked a lot of features. Now the 4th gen has the feature set that will indeed make it a worthy purchase. Would love to know how fast this baby is gonna scream too!!! Roll on June!!!!!!!!! To all the fanboys it aint all about curves for all you girly hands out there!!! This design pays homage to the MBP, iPad and looks superb!

Just my 2 pence worth.

That case design looks like a step backwards imo :-\

Was Mr Ive on holiday when it was designed?

Hopefully this means that Apple is going back to being a hardware company. This new iPhone is trying hard to compete with the Nexus One and soon to be released Evo 4G, and doing a good job of it.

Hopefully Steve and Ive got together and cried tears of shame for the years of crippled hardware.

We might even get that Mac Mini Tower soon. :D

I still rather like it. Quite industrial. Closer to all the other Apple products in terms of cohesion, far more so than the existing 3G and 3GS models. Also, I'm digging the discrete buttons instead of the rocker for the volume, as it more easily allows those buttons to be used for other purposes (camera shutter, etc). The fact that it's slimmer, the screen is apparently so detailed as to be totally free of pixelation, and it has a bigger, badder battery are also pluses.

And man, that thing looks like it's built like a tank.

If this was the result of an employee leaving the phone in a bar, this dude will be unemployed by day's end. But I get a feeling that this was left in the wild on purpose.

If this is true, it's kinda disappointing to see... as much as I look through these Mac sites, I do like a 'final surprise' -- this seems to have ruined it! Ah well :)

Hopefully Apple will remove those awful cut lines....

I think it looks pretty good. Seams = user replaceable battery?

This could also be a hint at future design, no more bezels/gaskets...now if they can get that new-fangled ceramic onto the portable and iPad lines, that would be cool.

Can't agree more on that awkward case design ...

That case design looks like a step backwards imo :-\
I had this as a fake at first because the awkward, squared design seemed to be obviously NOT Apple. It is either a great hoax, or a step back for Ive and his crew on the design. The guts could be real, but that case is aweful.

I agree, the "new" design isn't too new looking but the new hardware and options like camera flash, etc. is what I'll be looking forward to and make me want to buy the iPhone 4 or whatever they call it. Anyway, most people put a case on their iPhone anyway.

Hmm. The breaks in the case are very un-Apple.

Wake up guys! Apple is playing catch up to HTC recently and the current iPhone 3GS is the cell phone equivalent of an 88 BMW. Still nice, with a classic design, but.... old.

What they're trying to do with this leak is to keep all of you who are interested in buying a cell phone NOW, not in 3 months, still interested in an Apple iPhone. This is all planned.

There Is A Use For The Seams

those seams might be used as "buttons" for the digital camera, they're placed at the right spot. Probably those seams are not cracks at all, but light sensors which detect if there is a finger on top or not. a finger would block sunlight, so the camera would be triggered!

looking forward to your responses

Read the article. It boots and goes into recovery mode, but as there's no firmware available for it they can't restore. This is how they know the screen resolution to be so high. And there's plenty of hardware in the device specifically labeled 'Apple', which, in combination with the polish and build quality of the device itself, would be incredibly hard for any single person to dupe without millions of dollars of equipment at his disposal.

I like the look of it, but like has been said previously itll most likely change. Gizmodo really need to get the device posted to geohot or the dev team so they can get it enabled and see what other secrets it's hiding and possibly start working on a hardware jailbreak.

Unfortunately these details revealed only re-affirm the pathetic feature list of the iPad. Suppose this iPhone will have the A4 1ghz as well. Feeling hesitant about my impending iPad purchase. :(

Micro-Sim...

Well, this throws a monkey wrench into the works...

I had planned on upgrading to the iPhone HD in June / July, and just swapping my Sim card back and forth between it, and my Jailbroken iPhone 3GS: HD for the days when it would be the only portable device I would be using, JB-3GS for the days when I would be toting an iPhone plus iPad or MBP (JB-3GS to piggyback my iPad /MBP onto the AT&T 3G network via MyFi)...

I better start reconsidering that plan, unless I want to take a few old sim cards and a razorblade and try to start making a Micro-Sim adapter. Why do I feel like some brainiac has already started this process somewhere?

That is just my particular debacle...

What about you other apple-heads?

The iPad 3G and the iPhone HD will have the same size Sim if this pre-production model proves to be correct, so does anyone plan on doing the old switch the Sim back and forth routine between their Apple portables, if they don't find a way to stop you from doing it?

gC

That is my particular

Did you actually read the Gizmodo article?
