I knew this clean designed beauty just can be from apple the first time i saw it, the 3g looks like a cheap toy in compare.

What happens if your iPhone breaks and you want to use another phone? Annoying.

Annoying indeed. I think that's the reason they did it with the ipad as well so people will be forced to go into a store to get a micro sim and a rate plan along with it instead of just popping in their existing sim.

can you say UGLY.
i like the new specs and features, but Steve Jobs will never let something that ugly looking get thru. It looks more like a knock-off Zune HD if you ask me. Looks like a step back about 5 years in design.

Things already exist in other industries - you call them. Why make an app when you can make slightly more money? Or - you could do it this say:

Create an app that does the ordering for you, and have it delivered to your location based on your GPS information, which you confirm.

Okay, apparently you're not getting what I'm trying to say.

What about using the iPhone with a front facing camera and go to a doctor. Instead of having a sign language interpreter there, I could use the iPhone as my "personal interpreter" and I could sign to the phone. The relay interpreter (on video) could voice out what I'm saying to my doctor. The doctor could voice out to my iPhone and have the interpreter sign what he is saying to me (on the phone).

The possibilities are endless.

OK! IF IF IF IF this is the next I phone.......

No doubt it will be better than the existing iPhone in terms of power, memory etc. BUT:

a) It's lost the suave and stylish look of the existing iPhone! They should have tried to better the look of it.

b) It's FAT! OK! I know, it's probably cuz of the greater innards. But they could have tried to make it a little more slimmer.

c) The screen. Oh the screen! Why couldn't they make it just a little bit larger?

I will be buying it, no doubt, but very disappointed.

Wow, Apple must not be making any money right now selling the iPhone the way they do and not the way you suggest. It's about context. The phone model wouldn't work on the iPad, makes perfect sense on the iPhone even if it's not exactly what you want.

Not saying they aren't making money. Just saying what I would like...not saying they need to switch to that way or else their doomed or anything like that. Just saying that there are those of us out there that would like to have something that has the function of the iPad 3G in the space of a iPad Touch. Probably never going to see that, but one can dream can't they?

It's actually thinner than the current iPhone, you could do some research before posting.

I think this article explains it pretty well:

http://www.macworld.com/article/150714/2010/04/iphone_4.html

I said earlier that I thought it was a knock off, but I take that back now. I think it's just as the article states. It's a test frame, designed to fit into a 3G S enclosure to make it look inconspicuous for real life testing. If anything it's nothing more than a prototype.
If it's a prototype, what's up with the Chinese pictures of the exact same product stripped down to the metal chassis? Someone has gone through a lot of trouble to design the chassis for those exact components, which seems like a curious thing to do for a prototype, and moreoever, why would some Chinese manufacturer make parts for the prototype? Given the secrecy at Apple, and the Chinese' history of leaking like sieves, any prototype would be made and assembled at Apple.

What IS interesting is that the prototype essentially holds most of the major wishes from a lot of us on the next version of the phone. Removable battery, ceramic back (multi-touch), front facing camera, better primary camera, flash, high resolution screen, noise canceling, increased storage (80GB? Wow).

I don't think it's realistic to assume all this will make it into the next version, but it's great that Apple is in fact listening and testing these options.
I think it's highly realistic. Front facing camera, a decent primary camera and flash have been stock features of smartphones forever. Apple can only peddle phones with vastly inferior features (some are vastly superior, but not the ones I mentioned) for so long. And at least 64 GB is a must for the next version, they can't offer 32 GB as the flagship model for the second year in a row.

As for the battery being removable, it's not removable-removable. It still doesn't have a shell. It's been perceived as user removable because the battery can be accessed by opening the phone on the side, but that's because there's now no other way to access the internals even for service personnel than to go in from the side now that the back plate can only be removed from the inside, which requires more disassembly fiddling than a battery replacement is worth.

Sigh. Discounting the possibility that your designer friends are just bad designers (a possibility magnified by the fact that you seem to actually like the abominations you linked), my suspicion is that their sense of proportion is getting tricked by Gizmodo's perennially lame photography.

Giz likes to show off their equipment in every single shot, so you get this heavily in-your-face style with as little as possible in focus. Long story short, this makes the iPhone in these shots appear to be dramatically thicker than it really is.

Check the general opinion of users and designers once the Apple product photos come out.

Can't you be intelligent, in a good sense way.

Because I can tell one simple truth just from you're post: You're not even a kilometer close to anything job to design, or maybe you do hippie wooden statues but not industrial design I can tell.

But sure, I cannot judge the actual Iphone HD, only this so called leak.

Have you even bothered to read any of the measurements/specs of this 'device' ?

It's physically smaller than the current iPhone 3GS in every meaningful dimension, and is almost 2mm thinner.

I think it was "lost" intentionally. I bet it's not the final design but one of the directions being considered for the final design. Steve and company simply wanted to see what everyone's reaction would be.

I bet Steve is laughing his ass off right now. :)

And talk about free publicity! You'd think someone found the missing link with all the news agencies that are picking this up! :)

i cant even imagine how the person who lost this feels. what a securityfail. If you thought that the security measures with apple prototypes are overbearing now, just wait till after this fiasco. wow. someone is an idiot. "Lemme go take one of the most exclusive prototypes in the world and get trashed at the bar to celebrate my job as hardware beta tester!!!!"

wakes up next morning..... where's my iphone.... *logs onto engadget and see's his fail...... all vital organs get remote de-activated by apple*

If this is a Chinese knockoff, then the Chinese have really stepped their game up.

I LOVE the concept of front facing camera. The front facing camera will definitely open doors for the deaf community. I wouldn't be surprised if there will be a "relay" apps for the iPhone that will allow us order food at McDonald's without having to write anything down. We could use the app and sign to the interpreter what we need and that interpreter could voice our message. So many possibilities......

I was a relay operator in the early 90's, and I've been amazed at how the technology developed since has helped the deaf community. SMS alone is a remarkable breakthrough.

I think an app that translates ASL into text would be difficult without a live interpreter on the other end. Translation programs have enough trouble as it is just interpreting text to text. Bringing in three dimensions would totally throw it off. Still, I'm sure it will come eventually.

Yeah, going by the pictures - it's THINNER.

I really like the look of this phone. Very modern, clean cut. Much nicer than the current 3G/3GS's "bubbly" design.

Very nice Apple - if true :)

Its funny because if you didn't know any better you'd think the 3GS is the actual successor when viewing them side by side.

It is "a little more slimmer" than the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. It's just not pointlessly curvy.

Hmmm, I wish iPhone 4g screen would be bigger. After using the iPad and Nexus phone, the screen resolution on the current iPhone is disappointing. Having a slightly bigger screen, maybe like 5", and better resolution, I would be able to get a lot more work done on the road. With the new Dell tablets ( 5" and 7"), I might just try them out. I like the iPad, but not having a voice cell phone built in forces me to carry two devices. Something like the Dell android tablet would be perfect, around 5" and have cell phone voice abilities.
