Apparently, its a fake.

Earlier today Gizmodo made a post titled “This is Apple’s Next iPhone”. They claim that the iPhone they have was found in a bar in Redwood City. To make matters worse, they are just assuming that this really is a prototype based on the fact that they saw multiple components in the iPhone that were labeled Apple. Sorry to rain on your parade Gizmodo, but your iPhone is a fake. That explains why it doesn’t boot up, and why you can’t connect it to iTunes and download even the beta version of iPhone OS 4.0 software to it. Someone most likely took out the components from the current iPhone, placed them in a fake Chinese iPhone clone and sent it to you. I just contacted one of my sources who has had actual hands on experience with a prototype of the new iPhone, and he has confirmed that this prototype is nowhere close to what the real iPhone 4G looks like and it’s a FAKE. I’m talking to my source again right now and am trying to get more information out of him, but I may not be able to reveal much as his career is at stake here. Stay tuned!

Source: Gizmodo has iPhone 4G? It’s a fake!

Fake or not, I like the new features but hate the design. The design is so not Apple.

You can look at my previous posts if you feel I'm back pedaling- I do like the design with the glass and aluminum "sandwich". I'm just not crazy about the buttons and the seams, although those are likely to change as they are small cosmetic details when compared to the overall construction.

This.

This is what makes it ulgy imo. Those round volume buttons make it look like my very old toshiba mp3 player. yuk?

1. Ugly
2. Apple would never make a user-replaceable bettery
3. I wish they'd make the design for both iPod touch and this more like the iPad and iPad 3G

The (rumored) revamped Mac Pro, which I personally find much more interesting. That case has looked the same since prehistoric times, i.e. before the Intel switch.

It's still the best looking tower on the market. Why mess with success? I can see the Mac Pro still looking good for another 10 years or more. It's beautiful, simple, classic, iconic. It's the Leica of computers.

Don't take iPhones Talk claims to serious, they have their own rep to worry about because they have there own exclusive prototype pictures to worry about.

Giz has a lot more rep then iPhones Talk.

Not to mention the Giz iPhone prototype uses smaller versions of known iPhone hardware along with branded, not just straight transplant.

That was my first thought but now I have to think it is a plant.

Assuming this is real, someone in Cupertino is going to lose their job. Abruptly.

In otherwords I believe it is a real Apple iPhone prototype but I question that it is a next generation device. Mainly because if it was Apples next iPhone it would have Apple Legal more excited than it is. Past Apple behaviour would have the site under a barrage of Apple take down orders.

So instead of lost let's call it a plant. Maybe Apple is doing some market testing right now. After all knowing how to manage the public reaction to a device up front can be very valuable.

I think it looks quite good and if you look at the squared off aluminium sides, it does look like the ipad. The difference from the ipad is the back, Apple can't put an aluminium back on it beacuse it would reduce the reception for wi-fi or 3g. It may not be the final version but I can see it being an Apple design.

Just offering an alternative point of view and stating some facts. It still could be that both are fakes. I still haven't seen anything solid on claims that Apple reported it lost or stolen. I like to see legal letters from Apple's lawyers that they are oh so liberal about sending out.

"Release the hounds, Smithers!"

I say get Geohot involved with this, if you want that thing to boot, he'd be your man.

Maybe, but there's more to the issue than looks... it signals neglect and provides leverage to those who maintain that Apple doesn't give a crap about the pro market anymore. It signals that Apple has run out of ideas and inspiration and can't come up with ways to improve upon the design. From a brand image POV that might not be a very good idea, and in the long run this idea of Steve's that desktops are dead might become a self-fulfilling prophecy. And then the pros will have to turn to PC to get the horsepower and flexibility that the iMac can't provide...

iMac or Mac Pro? And based on what I read the comment was about the exterior look of the Mac Pro. I think that the Mac Pro desktop style case is by far the most elegant, professional looking system on the market. Ever since the introduction of the Power Mac G5 case (and I own 3 of these because I love the look of them so much), Apples high end desktops have looked great. Their designs are efficient, functional, and look good in any office or work setting.

As I spent the last couple weeks at work scrapping plastic Dell and HP systems that were JUST as expensive as a Mac Pro or G5 (at the time) I have learned to appreciate even more the Apple line of desktops.

My theory is that this is one of the prototypes Apple made for 4th gen but did not actually decide to use, it has all of the features that the real 4th gen will have except for the design which will be different. Then Apple leaked this phone on purpose to mislead the media and create a buzz, so when they actually launch the phone it will have all these features but will have a much better design so the reception it will get will be very positive. I know its far fetched, but it could happen.

If the leak is true it will include the following:

-The first substantially new case design
-New hardware features and updates
-OS overhaul (although you can also run that on the 3GS)
-Expected memory and performance increases

Yeah. Small update. What else could they possibly change?

There are substantial case design changes from iPhone 2G to 3G without 'expected' memory and performance increases...

Of course, it was back in 2008.....

I thought about it. I'd bet he'd reply, since he's been so talkative. (I like new Steve!)

The email should go like this:

Steve,

Does Gizmodo actually have the new, magical, revolutionary iPhone?

Want to bet on what the one word answer would be?

I sent it word for word. Worst answer I can get is "we don't comment on unannounced products" I'll let you know.
