They say that one is lucky if 50% of the money one donates gets to the cause. That is why I prefer to donate "stuff" instead of cash.

The "stuff" is unwanted, the costs are too high. By the time some one checks it, cleans it, puts it into storage etc you have simply costs the Redcross more than the item is worth. They are NOT going to supply goods that may cause harm.
Things like Blankets, they get them all prepackaged , new from the manufacture on pallets ready to ship anywhere in the world, they get them at a heavy discount because of the volumes they buy, and they can get them closer to the site of need, reducing shipping costs.

The "stuff" is just sold off, so even less real help is actually making it to victims.

The Fox link you provided does not show that link, and CNN long ago lost all credibility.
It definitely shows it. Here you go:

Why can't companies just donate and not make it public? Or is there an ulterior motive?

didn't Texas people had enough time to evacuate its a no from me

No, and even if they did, authorities know from past hurricane evacuations that the evacuation of large numbers of people can be very tricky and dangerous. People have died like what happened with the bus fire years ago in Texas. Some people have been evacuated to areas that were impacted even worse than where they lived, getting trapped in a hotel surrounded by flood waters, requiring a second evacuation. This flooding will probably go down as the worst flooding in this country in decades, maybe a century or two. This is Katrina for the Houston area, hopefully not as bad when it comes to the loss of life. Recovery will be measured in years, not weeks or months.

At least Apple's doing something on the front page of its website.

I had a look at other companies websites to see what they're doing:
  • Microsoft - nothing
  • Google - nothing
  • Amazon - nothing
  • Visa - nothing
  • MasterCard - nothing
  • American Express - nothing
  • Target - nothing
  • Walmart - nothing

Wow.

Now, remember that Houston is the oil capital of the US, with no less than 25 Fortune 500 companies headquartered there. Surely they'd step up and offer web resources to help their local community organize and recover? Wouldn't you think? (Self interest, if nothing else.)

So I checked the websites for the ten largest Houston corporations (the number below in bold is their Fortune 500 ranking). These are big, multinational, oil-rich players who pump money out of the ground 24x7:
Nothing.

So well done Apple. Thinking different indeed.

Maybe because all their employees are dealing with the flood?

Apparently they did that for Rita and it caused more harm and death than if people would have stayed put. Imagine if the scene was thousands of people stranded on a freeway that was now under water.

There are close to 6 million people in greater Houston. Are you going to put all of them on the freeway with an approaching hurricane? Can you imagine how desperate a situation it would have been if hundreds of thousands of people got stuck in traffic and then stranded on flooding highways? And let's not forget that flooding does damage whether or not people are in the structures that are being flooded.

I think in Apple's case they're just using their infrastructure to help. That, in itself, is quite commendable:
  • Their website front page raises awareness
  • Their iTunes store payments system makes it frictionless to donate.
That said, when I went to donate, I noticed I could NOT use store credit. Seriously Apple? You've been holding onto my money for over a year, interest free and you're saying you won't now let it go to a good cause? It's not like it's costing you anything.

A bit better than the hateful left wing scam front called "Southern Poverty Law Center" but still not great. Check the details before blindly handing over your money.

I'm all for helping, but shenanigans always result from these sorts of things. When the leaders of the Red Cross are very wealthy people, that gives me pause.

Again, do not donate to Red Cross. Corrupt people! Look at their terrible work in Haiti. Lot's of better charities than Red Cross.
The governor of Texas is telling people to donate to the Red Cross.

If you can explain to me how water would not wick up the blanket and up their clothing, then I'll believe this isn't fake.
if their clothing and blankets were already wet, then it wouldn't wick up more water.......
as for the point earlier about the power being out, it looks like the only power on is the overhead lights, none of the appliances or lights plugged into wall power outlets, are on. this leads me to believe that the only power able to be delivered into this building is, ironically, the power to the area where there is no water.

most modern structures are build with fail-safes and systems to prevent power going to the lower sockets in the case of flooding. similar to your bathroom outlet shorting out if you splash water on it.
other wise, every house that floods over is automatically a "toaster in a bathtub" waiting to happen.

I doubt it. He and Apple can donate millions with nobody's help. You honestly think there isn't an ulterior motive? Dozens of celebrities and company donate without using their celebrity or name recognition. Why? Because they truly believe in the cause.

Above the water line in the photo, the blanket on the woman in the foreground is dry, as are the sleeves and torso of the dress of the woman knitting.

Had this photo been real, they would not be--they'd be wicking water up.

Try it yourself with a bucket and any piece of cloth.
