Over the weekend, Apple has set up a donation system that allows iTunes customers to easily donate to the Red Cross' Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief efforts. The donation page is linked from the iTunes Store and can be accessed by following this link.

Donation amounts range from $5 to $200, and the entire amount is sent to the American Red Cross.

Apple set up a similar system last year to support victims of the Haitian earthquakes.

I followed the link from Apple's web page, takes me to iTunes but not to the Donation part... is it working okay?

Nice little effort there. I'll defnitely donate a little bit here. What's been happening in japan last few days is pretty unbelievable. Just saw this tsunami video. Terrifying stuff there :/

One thing I dont really understand why I cant use the iTunes credit to donate here. Probably something to with accounting maybe be. Dunno but it'll really make such donations (and gifting apps) a hell lot easier if I could just use the credit which is already there in my account.

good cause!

unfortunately the link does not work in the south african itunes store........

You can always donate directly to your country's Red Cross or other aid organisations that specify the funds are going towards the quake.

http://donations.redcross.org.za/ (though it seems a bit ambiguous only saying "flood victims 2011")
https://www.redcross.org.au/Donations/onlineDonations.asp (this one lists the earthquake and flood explicitly)

Otherwise you can always donate via Google to the Japan RC:

Somehow, I doubt that. Or did I miss something in their financial reports?

i like how apple would encourage our donation, yet fail to do the same. Especially with a company doing a lot of business in Japan.

Plus the fact that Apple has several billion dollars in the bank. Surely Apple can afford send a few million dollars that way.

But I am happy that Apple's giving us another way to donate.

Apple have so much cash they should match a percentage of donations or something to that effect. All they are doing is put up a link on their front page and all the Mac and gadget sites are going nuts about how awesome this is. People can just donate directly to Red Cross ya know.

My heart goes out to the Japanese people. I have never met a more humble, gracious people than the Japanese in my world travels. God Bless Them....

It's great that there is now another way in which to donate. What has happened there is truely awful and such terrible events like these really put small problems and issues in perspective.

iTunes donation page for those curious.

No iTunes store credit? Does that mean the donation won't be taken from the $21 I have on my account from a giftcard? This money's just going to stagnate there forever, isn't it? Also, why does Apple take paypal from iTunes but not on their online store?

This is good.

With people buying new Ipad 2s on the day it happened, it looks like Apple could part ways with some of the profits.
